"Through the windows of a Baptist Meeting House": Religion, politics and the Nonconformist Conscience in the life of Sir George White, M.P.

    No full text
With the compilation of the New Dictionary of National Biography, under the general editorship of Colin Matthew, the contributions of many more of the Free Church men and women who helped shape nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain will be acknowledged. Among the debutants in the revised canon of great Britons will be Sir George White MP, 1 the man described by the British Weekly as the 'foremost lay leader of English Nonconformity in our generation' ,2 yet a politician largely ignored by historians of Edwardian Britain.3 This is a significant oversight, for White featured prominently in Free-Church politics in the early twentieth century, chairing the Nonconformist Committee in the House of Commons and acting as a bridge between old-style dissenting Radicalism and the new(er) Liberalism of practical politicians like Lloyd George.4 Although 'plain and modest' with 'no pretentions to brilliance', White reached the top in business, politics and the Baptist denomination through the classic Victorian virtues of hard work, dedication and devotion,S his success resting, in part, on his power as a speaker with 'the enviable faculty granted to the best speakers of saying, and thinking clearly and strongly while he is on his feet,.6 This paper, which is based primarily on press reports of his life and death, will outline White's achievements in religion, business and politics, illustrating the way these elements interacted, and looking, in particular, at the three areas in which religion most obviously influenced his political views: class relations, education and temperance

“Well, you go there to get off” Visiting Feminist Care Ethics through a Women’s Bathhouse

    No full text
This paper examines normative feminist care scholarship through the lens of a sexual bathhouse. At first glance, a space dedicated to casual sexual pleasure seems at odds with care ethics. Drawing on Toronto Women’s Bathhouse (TWB) as a case study, this paper argues that bathhouse spaces can exemplify feminist care norms. At the same time, as a casual sexual space oriented towards personal autonomy, carefree conduct, and self-care, TWB also challenges certain feminist care assumptions. Drawing on these challenges, in the light of wider problems with normative care theorizing, particularly the sanitization and idealization of personal relationships, the paper seeks to revision care along non-normative lines

Observation of cooper pair splitting and andreev bound states in carbon nanotubes

    No full text
In this thesis, we investigate Cooper pair splitting in double quantum dot devices made from carbon nanotubes. We present transport measurements in which the controlled splitting of Cooper pairs dominates the current through such a device, reaching unprecedented splitting efficiencies of up to 90%. In another experiment we use Cooper pair splitting (and a related non-local transport processes) as a tool to investigate Andreev bound states. Andreev bound states are a key concept in mesoscopic superconductivity. They can form due to the penetration of Cooper pairs into a quantum dot, leading to a new type of energy level that differs drastically from conventional particle-in-a-box states

Land Ethic Under Attack: Keystone XL and the War Over Domestic S(OIL)

    No full text
The Keystone XL pipeline has caused recent controversy and renewed the debate over the future of fossil fuels in the United States. The project pits largely conservative groups, who argue that the pipeline will create jobs and decrease America’s dependence on foreign oil, against environmental advocates, indigenous tribes, and private landowners, who are attempting to fend off the project because they believe it will displace them of their own lands as well as disrupt the natural ecosystems that lay in the pipeline’s path. In the wake of a presidential veto of the project and renewed sentiment by the pipeline’s manufacturer to move forward with the project by an alternative route, public outcry as to the safety of the pipeline and the environmental consequences of continued exploitation of the Canadian tar sands has increased. This article analyzes the Keystone XL pipeline project through the lens of Earth Jurisprudence: a growing movement in the United States focused on changing the way humans view the environment when confronted with political and legal decisions that have direct and often adverse affects on the Earth. The teachings of Aldo Leopold and Thomas Berry encourage humans to re-imagine the legal system in a manner that broadens its focus to include current and future generations of humans, plants, animals, and ecosystems as equal parts of the whole rather than a chain of command where humans reign supreme. This article discusses several concepts and principles that are based upon or derived from the earth jurisprudence movement and applies these concepts to recent events surrounding the Keystone XL project. Ultimately, the author seeks to show readers that the Keystone XL pipeline is a temporary fix to America’s problems and the risks associated with the project will cause irreparable political, economic, and environmental harm that will be felt for generations to come

The escape of the imaginary author

    No full text
This creative/critical overview of the novels A Bloody Good Friday, The Chivalry o/Crime and Cressida's Bed by Desmond Barry, and Far South by David Enrique Spellman, will examine some of the literary influences in the composition of the novels, as well as the development of the author from naive dilettante, influenced by the Beats, to heteronymous voice of the Far South Project and the creation of an imaginary author. The overview examines some of the underlying psychological and philosophical matrices out of which the novels were born and the influence of writers such as William S. Burroughs and Jorge Luis Borges. The work will trace a journey from the Aristotelian forms of the published Barry novels to the experimental multi-platform narratives of Far South. It will show how the process of learning in an academic environment influenced an involvement with Aristotelian formal strategies that in turn led to experiments with the use of chance in the production of multiplatform narratives. The exegesis points the way to new literary and creative forms through digital technologies that are widely accessible and open up innovative ways of cooperation among dancers, photographers, filmmakers, web designers, and writers, which can subvert or cooperate with existing publishing paradigms. This self-reflective narrative examination of practice-led research and creative process begins as an examination of the tensions involved in the creation of a classic Aristotelian narrative form and develops into an interrogation and illumination of the potentialities of using cooperation and chance in prose fiction and interdisciplinary multi-platform stories.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
