The 1961 Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire and the making of modern Singapore

    No full text
By 1970, Singapore’s urban landscape was dominated by high-rise blocks of planned public housing built by the People’s Action Party government, signifying the establishment of a high modernist nation-state. A decade earlier, the margins of the City had been dominated by kampongs, home to semi-autonomous communities of low-income Chinese families which freely built, and rebuilt, unauthorised wooden houses. This change was not merely one of housing but belied a more fundamental realignment of state-society relations in the 1960s. Relocated in Housing and Development Board flats, urban kampong families were progressively integrated into the social fabric of the emergent nation-state. This study examines the pivotal role of an event, the great Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire of 1961, in bringing about this transformation. The redevelopment of the fire site in the aftermath of the calamity brought to completion the British colonial regime’s ‘emergency’ programmes of resettling urban kampong dwellers in planned accommodation, in particular, of building emergency public housing on the sites of major fires in the 1950s. The PAP’s far greater political resolve, and the timing of and state of emergency occasioned by the scale of the 1961 disaster, enabled the government to rehouse the Bukit Ho Swee fire victims in emergency housing in record time. This in turn provided the HDB with a strategic platform for clearing other kampongs and for transforming their residents into model citizens of the nation-state. The 1961 fire’s symbolic usefulness extended into the 1980s and beyond, in sanctioning the PAP’s new housing redevelopment schemes. The official account of the inferno has also become politically useful for the government of today for disciplining a new generation of Singaporeans against taking the nation’s progress for granted. Against these exalted claims of the fire’s role in the Singapore Story, this study also examines the degree of actual change and continuity in the social and economic lives of the people of Bukit Ho Swee after the inferno. In some crucial ways, the residents continued to occupy a marginal place in society while pondering, too, over the unresolved question of the cause of the fire. These continuities of everyday life reflect the ambivalence with which the citizenry regarded the high modernist state in contemporary Singapore

DVB-T2 reception in Jurong HDB estate - part i

    No full text
DVB-T2 is the most advanced digital terrestrial television system, which is regarded as an extension of the previous existing standard DVB-T. It can make a better use of spectral resources; provide better additional bit rate and offer more robustness, flexibility and at least 50% more efficiency than other DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) system. The specification is developed primarily for fixed rooftop reception antennas, and it has an identical frequency spectrum channel characteristics like DVB-T so that it enables the compatibility with the existing transmission infrastructure. The project that the author was enrolled in will research on the technology of DVB-T2 and the potential factors, which influence the performance of the digital TV signal reception. By analysis all the effects, the results of the project would be useful for improving the quality of digital TV. All the experiments was implemented in Jurong area HDB estate and the NTU campus. This project consists of two main parts: the indoor measurement and the outdoor measurement. The final results show that a better antenna and a better test location will result in greater signal reception level.Bachelor of Engineerin

Liftings for Haar measure on {0,1}k

We call E subset-of-or-is-equal-to {0,1}kappa projective if for some countable A subset-of-or-is-equal-to kappa there is an E(A) subset-of-or-is-equal-to {0,1}A such that E = E(A) x {0,1}kappa/A and E(A) is a projective subset of the Cantor set {0,1}A. We construct a model where Haar measure on {0,1}kappa has no projective lifting (and in particular no Baire lifting) for any kappa greater-than-or-equal-to omega.PT: J; CR: FREMLIN DH, 1989, HDB BOOLEAN ALGEBRAS, P877 JECH TJ, 1978, SET THEORY JUST W, IN PRESS T AM MATH S MAHARAM D, 1958, P AM MATH SOC, V9, P987 SHELAH S, 1983, ISRAEL J MATH, V45, P90; NR: 5; TC: 3; J9: ISR J MATH; PG: 12; GA: GG100Source type: Electronic(1

    シンガポールにおける「総団地化社会」成立の諸過程に関する社会学研究に向けた一考察 : シンガポール改良信託団地から

Departmental Bulletin PaperThe aims of this sociological study is to examine the social process to realize the unprecedented society where more than eighty percent of the population must live in public housing estates under the public housing authority of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in Singapore, and to explore the interaction between the nation and the state. Interaction and struggle have existed between the housing authority and the estate residents, and this has had a direct relation on nationbuilding in Singapore. As the first step forward, this paper focuses on the public housing estates developed by Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), which was the predecessor of HDB and operating from 1927 to 1960. An examination of earlier research on SIT reveals that no sociological studies have been conducted on SIT, but there was a study done in the field of public administration that compared SIT and HDB, with the formulation that SIT was inferior to HDB, an organization that has contributed to the nation-building and success of Singapore. This formulation is same as the one created by HDB, and has become absolute in a society where most of the population must live in estates under HDB. However, the fieldwork undertaken by the author on the SIT flats that remain reveals that they continue to serve as very good housing and are excellent places to reside. Some literature on the SIT flats demolished by HDB also indicate that they were very good to live in. Many Singaporeans also express concern about the housing, and some interesting movements are occurring there now. To grasp the work of SIT it is necessary to maintain a distance from the absolute formulati on and exami n e i t in d e ta i l u s ing contemporary materials of those days when the housing estates were being developed by SIT. This will help examine the process of developing public housing estates in Singapore and take a step forward in the sociological study of the interaction between the nation and the state.彦根論叢, 第404号, pp. 16-31The Hikone Ronso, No.404, pp. 16-31departmental bulletin pape
