Many students at HJH
participate in extreme
sports. You may ask,
“what is an extreme sport?” An
extreme sport is one that involves
more risk or injury than average
sports. It is an adrenaline pumping
activity. One of the more popular
extreme sports at HJH is Skate
Boarding. There are others such
as snow boarding, mountain
biking, wake boarding, and
BMX’ing. Josh Gabrial is an
extreme skate boarder. He skates
at the new Lethbridge Skate Park
on the north side of town. He also
likes the area downtown around
the Centre Place Mall. He looks
for steps, small walls, ledges and
hand railings to challenge his
abilities. Most skaters spend as
much time as they can practicing their sport... some up to 3 hours a
day. At the first of the year Adam Lastiwka and some fellow skaters
when to the School Board Office with a proposal for the HJH
Skateboarders. They wanted a place to do what they do! They skate at
lunch hours but had been kicked off every place they had tried to skate
that was near the school. They proposed that theHJH skaters be
allowed to use the area that leads up to the school board office parking
lot just south of the school. They knew it was an acces road to the
board office parking lot and they didn’t want to bother the board office
employees. So they put together a list of rules and requests to make
the area safe for skateboarding while not bothering people who needed
acces to the building. The superidentent, Mr. M. Clewes accepted their
proposal and now the HJH skaters have a place to practice their sport
near the school.

Every school must raise money
these days but how many students
have the opportunity to win a vehicle
by helping out? Paige Atkinson (grade
9) won herself a GMC Jimmy for her
efforts in the bi-annual HJH fund raiser.
Bridge City Chrysler donated the used
sport utility vehicle to Hamilton for the
event. Students participating in the
fund raiser found sponsors before
they took an exam. Students then
collected a net amount from their
sponsors or an amount per question
they correctly answered on the
exam. This was a more creative and
fun way of raising money than selling
chocolates or candles.
HJH had some great sponsors
so we had some great prizes. The top
fundraiser was allowed to pick for first
prize and every consecutive finisher
picked next.
Among the prizes was a
round-trip for four to Edmonton
courtesy of Integra Air. Coca-Cola,
meanwhile, donated money to the
school to help pay for basketball
uniforms and glass backboards.
Cathy Frache (grade 7), was
the top fund raiser with a total of 20 bills out to anyone they pick.

Cycling on the Verge? Exploring the Place of Utility Cycling in Contemporary New Zealand Transport Policy
Efforts to increase cycling as a mode of transport (utility cycling) occur at central, regional and local levels of government through a range of supportive strategies, research, and guidelines. Despite these efforts, utility cycling levels in New Zealand have remained persistently low. This thesis examines the apparent disparity between policy intent and policy result, using a discourse analytical approach. It examines how cycling is positioned in contemporary New Zealand transport policy documents, and explores whose priorities are shaping transport policy with what implications for utility cycling.
This study uses a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to analyse the land transport documents from across the institutions of government. The CDA approach, grounded in the work of van Dijk and Fairclough, draws on ideas from the interpretive tradition of discourse analysis, inspired by Foucault’s concepts of knowledge and power. This approach reveals the position of utility cycling by exposing the framing, dominant discourses, and discursive strategies that privilege certain transport objectives and activities over others.
The findings show transport is promoted almost exclusively by central government as an activity to facilitate economic growth and efficiency, despite its potential (and actual) impacts on health and well-being, social justice, and environmental sustainability. The discursive practices of the government privilege private motor vehicle use, helping to both legitimate and maintain that privilege at all levels of government, while positioning utility cycling as a marginalised mode of transport.
This thesis contributes to scholarship on utility cycling and land transport policy in New Zealand by identifying how the discursive strategies of government control the position of utility cycling in New Zealand. This study underscores the need for a central government-led, long-term strategic vision for a genuinely integrated, multi-modal transport system, in order for the benefits of utility cycling to be fully maximised
Mean Annual Temperature and Total Annual Precipitation Trends at Canadian Biosphere Reserves
This article examines instrumental climate records from a variety of stations associated with the following Biosphere Reserves across Canada: (i) Waterton Lakes, (ii) Riding Mountain, (iii) Niagara Escarpment, (iv) Long Point, and (v) Kejimkujik (Candidate Biosphere Reserve). Annual series are generated from daily temperature and precipitation values. In addition, homogeneous data are used from other stations and regional records to supplement the records from the local biosphere stations. Long term trends are identified over the period of the instrumental record. In general, data from the interval 1900 to 1998 show cooler temperatures in the 1920's, warming from the early 1940's into the early 1950's, cooling into the 1970's, and subsequent warming. At many stations, 1998 is the warmest in the instrumental record. Comparisons with the regional data sets show good agreements between the temperature series. The 20th century warming is approximately 1.0 °C in the Riding Mountain area and 0.6 °C in the Long Point, Niagara Escarpment, and Waterton Lakes areas. There has been slight cooling in the Kejimkujik area over the past half century. Precipitation data show increasing trends in the Kejimkujik, Long Point, Niagara Escarpment, and Waterton Lakes areas with no long term trend in the Riding Mountain area. Modelling Study of Dredging Induced Sediment Plume Transport in Hamilton Harbour
a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and mud transport modelling system MIKE 3-FM is used to study the flow circulation and the sediment plume fate in the Randle Reef (RR) area of Hamilton Harbour. It was found that the simulated plume extents can be very sensitive to transport model mesh resolution because of the additional numerical advection induced in the calculations. Detailed discussion of this particular issue has not been observed in other publications. The results of the simulation provide useful information for remediation project managers to plan and guide the environmental monitoring of dredging operations. In addition, the methodology used in this study can be adapted to other dredging projects. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. In a series of conversations with Duncan Trussell, Graham Hancock, Grant Morrison, Hamilton Morris, Erik Davis, Julia Mossbridge, Rupert Sheldrake, and others, author David Jay Brown elicits answers to some of the most thought-provoking questions about our origins, ecological consciousness, the potential of psychedelics, and the future of humanity and the Earth
The Gap: women’s and men’s perspectives on parenting in the context of domestic violence
Domestic violence is a significant issue within New Zealand society. The purpose of this research was to explore parenting within the context of domestic violence, through men’s perspectives, as perpetrators of domestic violence, and women’s perspectives, as victims of domestic violence. The participants were recruited through their association with the Hamilton Abuse Intervention Project (HAIP), a coordinated community response to violence. The study aimed to gain understanding of the impact of violence on children, women, mothering and the batterer as parent; provide reflection on the men’s stopping violence programme at HAIP in relation to abusive men’s parenting; and examine the role of children in abusive men’s motivation to change. Nine semi-structured interviews with men attending HAIP’s stopping violence programmes were conducted, and two focus groups were held with ten women associated with HAIP. The key findings suggest that domestic violence has significant detrimental outcomes for children and women and significantly constrains women’s ability to be an effective mother. The men were found to use negative parenting practices but to have limited understanding of the impact of their behaviour on either mother or child. The women reported various ways in which they were able to work around the abuser to protect their children and to be effective as a mother, at least some of the time. Although women generally supported the continuing involvement of the fathers in the lives of their children, such involvement often served to disrupt the process of healing from the violence for both children and women. This study provides recommendations for policy and practice with regard to fathering interventions for abusive men

Dates: September 16, 2025 to January 18, 2026 Venue: Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum, Istanbul, TurkeyFeelings in Common Works from the British Council Collection The exhibition, Feelings in Common: Works from the British Council Collection on display at Pera Museum, brings together works by 29 artists from the United Kingdom who have left their mark on the international art scene. This valuable collection, which does not form a permanent exhibition and is mostly lent to international exhibitions, has also been referred to as a “museum without walls.” The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the future of art institutions, institutional collecting policies, and collections in general, while highlighting the potential of collections to forge powerful links with today’s socio-political dynamics. The catalogue features a text by curator Ulya Soley, alongside critic and theorist Boris Groys’ text “Logic of the Collection”, which examines the politics of collecting, and Eliott Burns’ text “Navigating a Liquid Collection”, written specifically for this catalogue, in which he examines the logistics, mobility, and cultural interactions of the works in the British Council Collection through the metaphor of a “liquid” collection and their international loan circulation. The publication is accompanied by poems from C. P. Cavafy, which inspired the David Hockney series featured in the exhibition. Artists: Graham Fagen, Larry Achiampong, Laura Aldridge, Ed Atkins, Sonia Boyce, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Eileen Cooper, Tony Cragg, Tracey Emin, Jane England, Cerith Wyn Evans, Lucian Freud, Anya Gallacio, Gilbert and George, Richard Hamilton, Lubaina Himid, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Michael Landy, Delaine Le Bas, Sarah Lucas, Kate Malone, Chris Ofili, Marc Quinn, Raqib Shaw, Wolfgang Tillmans, Suzanne Treister, Bedwyr Williams, Madame Yevonde.Publication Date: 2025 Number of Pages: 94 ISBN: 978-625-94734-8-2 <br/
