Observation of cooper pair splitting and andreev bound states in carbon nanotubes

    No full text
In this thesis, we investigate Cooper pair splitting in double quantum dot devices made from carbon nanotubes. We present transport measurements in which the controlled splitting of Cooper pairs dominates the current through such a device, reaching unprecedented splitting efficiencies of up to 90%. In another experiment we use Cooper pair splitting (and a related non-local transport processes) as a tool to investigate Andreev bound states. Andreev bound states are a key concept in mesoscopic superconductivity. They can form due to the penetration of Cooper pairs into a quantum dot, leading to a new type of energy level that differs drastically from conventional particle-in-a-box states

See also additional letters and manuscript fragments from Cooper in the collection.Cooper complies with Jewett\u27s request [presumably for an autograph] and states that he wishes it were worth her trouble to receive this boon. He also reveals that at Paris he knew a Princess of [Salm-Dyle?] who claimed that she invented autograph albums. Stating that he has offered his signature in many such volumes, Cooper notes that his female correspondents for this purpose have been as numerous "as I dare say, handsome and agreeable-- though I am obliged to take these qualities on credit." Cooper, the 11th of 12 children born to the man who founded Cooperstown and built Ostego Hall, is remembered for his books of sailing and wilderness adventure, including the Leatherstocking Series featuring Natty Bumppo, the most well-known of which is _Last of the Mohicans_ (1826). In addition to enjoying the life of a country gentleman in New York, Cooper also traveled and wrote extensively in Europe

The SF-36: a simple, effective measure of mobility disability for epidemiological studies

    No full text
BackgroundMobility disability is a major problem in older people. Numerous scales exist for the measurement of disability but often these do not permit comparisons between study groups. The physical functioning (PF) domain of the established and widely used Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire asks about limitations on ten mobility activities.ObjectivesTo describe prevalence of mobility disability in an elderly population, investigate the validity of the SF-36 PF score as a measure of mobility disability, and to establish age and sex specific norms for the PF score.MethodsWe explored relationships between the SF-36 PF score and objectively measured physical performance variables among 349 men and 280 women, 59-72 years of age, who participated in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS). Normative data were derived from the Health Survey for England (HSE) 1996.Results32% of men and 46% of women had at least some limitation in PF scale items. Poor SF-36 PF scores (lowest fifth of the gender-specific distribution) were related to: lower grip strength; longer timed-up-and-go, 3m walk, and chair rises test times in men and women; and lower quadriceps peak torque in women but not men. HSE normative data showed that median PF scores declined with increasing age in men and women.ConclusionOur results are consistent with the SF-36 PF score being a valid measure of mobility disability in epidemiological studies. This approach might be a first step towards enabling simple comparisons of prevalence of mobility disability between different studies of older people. The SF-36 PF score could usefully complement existing detailed schemes for classification of disability and it now requires validation against them

voiceCollected by Mrs. Donia Cooper For Mary Celestia Parler Transcribed by Mrs. Donia Cooper Sung by Mrs. Donia Cooper West Fork, Arkansas August 14, 1959 Reel 235-286, Item 6 Indian Mohee While I was out walking for pleasure one day, In sweet recreation to while time away. As I sat amusing myself in the shade, Oh who should come near me but a young Indian Maid. She sat down beside me and taking my hand, Says, “You are a stranger and in a strange land. But if you will consent, sir, you’re welcome to come And stay with the Mohee in the hut she calls home. The sun was fast sinking for over the blue sea When I wandered along with the little Mohee. Together we wandered, together we roved Till we came to the cottage in the coconut grove. And this kind expression she made unto me, “If you will consent, sir, to stay here with me, And go no more roving upon the salt sea, I'll teach you the language of the little Mohee." “Oh, no, my dear maiden, that never can be, For I have a true love for over the sea; I'll never forsake her, for I know she loves me And her heart is as true as the little Mohee’s.“ It was early one morning, one morning in May, That to this little maiden these words I did say, “I am going to leave you. So, farewell, my dear; My ship spreads are ready, and homeward I’ll steer." The last time I saw her she stood on the sand And as my ship passed her, she waved her small hand, Saying, “When you return, sir, to the girl that you love, Remember the maiden in the coconut grove." And when I had landed on my own native shore, With friends and relatives around me once more, (Cont’d)Indian Mohee Reel 285—286, Item 6 Continued I gazed all about me, no one could I see, That I could compare with my little Mohee. And the girl that I’d trusted proved untrue to me; So, I’ll turn my course backwards, far over the sea; I'll turn my course backwards to the girl who loves me. I'll go spend my days with the little Mohee.Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation

Effect on cardiovascular disease risk factors of interventions to alter consultations between practitioners and patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis of trials in primary care

    No full text
ObjectiveTo examine the effect on cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors of interventions to alter consultations between practitioners and patients with type 2 diabetes.Search StrategyElectronic and manual citation searching to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs).Inclusion CriteriaRCTs that compared usual care to interventions to alter consultations between practitioners and patients. The population was adults aged over 18 years with type 2 diabetes. Trials were set in primary care.Data extraction and synthesisWe recorded if explicit theory-based interventions were used, how consultations were measured to determine whether interventions had an effect on these and calculated weighted mean differences for CVD risk factors including glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C).ResultsWe included seven RCTs with a total of 2277 patients with type 2 diabetes. A range of measures of the consultation was reported, and underlying theory to explain intervention processes was generally undeveloped and poorly applied. There were no overall effects on CVD risk factors; however, trials were heterogeneous. Subgroup analysis suggested some benefit among studies in which interventions demonstrated impact on consultations; statistically significant reductions in HbA1c levels (weighted mean difference, −0.53%; 95% CI: [−0.77, −0.28]; P<.0001; I2=46%).ConclusionsEvidence of effect on CVD risk factors from interventions to alter consultations between practitioners and patients with type 2 diabetes was heterogeneous and inconclusive. This could be explained by variable impact of interventions on consultations. More research is required that includes robust measures of the consultations and better development of theory to elucidate mechanisms

edited by Hao, What I am Reading Now… (WIARN) is an ongoing monthly digital art publishing project which provides a critically engaged and supportive space for Black practitioners and practitioners of colour to share ideas, research, and their writing. In 2023, 12 issues was published featuring both esteemed and emerging academics, artists, writers, designers, musicians, activist and museum directors including:Sophia Al-Maria, Marie Hélène Pereira, Varsha Nair, Rosa-Johan Uddoh, layla-roxanne hill, Banji Chona, Vanessa Onwuemezi, Ntiense Eno-Amooquaye, Akwugo Emejulu, Kodwo Eshun, Anjalika Sagar, Maria Chávez. Underscoring the ongoing Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and considering the specific position of an art school gallery in relation to knowledge production and its dissemination, WIARN is a sustained context for original insights. Reflecting and embedding the ethos of the BLM movement and its capacity for social change through curatorial praxis, WIARN contributes to current research and thinking on decoloniality in contemporary cultural practices. Informed by and enhancing Hao’s the rhizomatic approach in curatorial practice, WIARN foregrounds criticality, discursivity and trans-disciplinarity by bringing together academics, activists, artists, cultural workers and writers at various stages of their career. Connecting them with Cooper Gallery’s multiple publics both in Dundee and further afield, WIARN acts as a catalyst for discussion on the shared politicised condition of contemporary cultural studies and practices. WIARN 2023 issues was featured in Art Monthly’s Selected Digital Resources throughout 2021 – 2023. <br/

Mathematics, multimedia and higher level thinking skills

    No full text
This paper emerges from our collective interest and experience in the use of multimedia in the science and mathematics classroom. We each approach this topic from a different direction. The first author, Martin, during his years as a classroom teacher, began to see the possibility of utilising multimedia to create a student centred learning environment in which a self paced curriculum would be delivered by the computer. Martin was aware, however, that there were many questions regarding the pedagogical value of using multimedia in the mathematics classroom that needed to be answered. Specifically, could the software address the vital issues of problem solving and higher-level thinking? The second author, Dorit, was involved in research in this area over the last 10 years. In her research she investigated the potential of computerised learning environments and constructivist teaching epistemology in promoting higher-level thinking skills in the science classroom
