No full textAs Abbey writes, the fable articles here precede and are different from their first appearance in book form a year later. For it was then that Ralston published the first edition of Krilof and His Fables. See my comments on the third (1871) and fourth (1883) editions. The book smells of its many years! The three fable articles are on 39-46, including six illustrations on 40-41; 215-221, including six illustrations on 216-17; and 413-20, including six illustrations on 416-17. These are magazine articles. They comment on Krilof's views and particularly on Russian foibles. Thus one prose text after another is integrated into the article. In the book, there will be, after a preface and a memoir, a simple collection of texts. In fact, the selection of Krilof fables within the article here is excellent, and the author puts them into a good cultural and political context. At least some of the illustrations are the same as those in the third edition.. The texts are close to those found in the published books. It makes sense to see the texts in the magazine here as forerunners of those fable texts there. I presume that Ralston had opportunity to edit and amend between his magazine articles and his book's first edition. The publisher of the magazine is of course the publisher of the third edition that I have. The print is minuscule! I needed a magnifying glass for normal reading. The index just after 774 assigns J.B. Zwecker and A.B. Houghton as illustrators for the eighteen illustrations in the three fable articles. Dalziel, Houghton, and Zwecker are the names I can make out on the illustrations. Can Reynolds stress transport models be used for large eddy simulation?
No full textThis work explores a route to unify Reynolds averaged (RANS) and large eddy simulation (LES). The approach is to use a slightly modified Reynolds stress transport model for any mesh resolution. The model is formulated in terms of both total kinetic energy and modeled kinetic energy in such a way that the RST model correctly reproduces RANS results, LES results, and even DNS results (by turning itself off). The model equations do not contain functions of the mesh size within any of the model terms or constants. It is demonstrated that this approach works at any mesh resolution. In addition, the model naturally transitions between mesh resolutions, either coarse to fine or vice-versa. It is shown that for LES mesh resolutions the model returns a turbulent length scale that is proportional to the mesh size (the classic LES turbulent length scale)

Large deviations of planetary jets
No full textRare or extreme events are of great interest in climate and other systems. Few studies address these statistics from a dynamical perspective. Classical statistical approaches, for instance closures or stochastic averaging usually describe typical states or low order statistics only. Large deviation theory is a very interesting alternative to these classical methods. It can in principle describe both typical fluctuations and extreme fluctuations. This allows us to discuss the long time evolution of the jet. One goal is to predict the dynamics that may lead to change of regimes and change of attractors in atmospheric jet dynamics
A rapid review of key policies and programs linked with nutrition and health in Ghana
No full textAs part of the process by the government of Ghana to develop food-based dietary guidelines, a review of policies and programs was commissioned. The review aimed to identify and describe the policy environment, with a focus on identifying the type of existing policies, priorities, and programs related to nutrition and health between 2010 and 2020. The review also tracked the evolution of changes in policies and programs over the same period. Using a systematic rapid scoping review approach, policy and program documents were identified and classified according to relevant nutritionspecific and nutrition-sensensitive sectors, including health, agriculture and food, human development, social protection, and trade. Data from included documents were extracted using an excel extraction tool. The extracted data including policies, programs, objectives, coverage of the policies/programs, intended outcomes, target groups, and agencies responsible for implementing these policies and programs. More than 70 government documents, plus other reports and literature sources describing government policy and programs with relevance for nutrition were identified. Most of these policies and programs were not designed to directly address malnutrition. This is because, the policies and programs neither referenced nutrition objectives, nor nutrition outcomes. However, the existing policies and programs had aspects that can be leveraged (either through redesign or implementation) to contribute to improved nutrition outcomes. A key challenge in the nutrition programming landscape is the nonexistence of a comprehensive and costed national nutrition strategic plan to accompany the national nutrition policy. The key nutrition priorities of the Government of Ghana and its partners, as expressed in the documents reviewed included infant and young child feeding, stunting reduction, anemia, and food security. There were key nutritionrelated issues which have not been prioritized, although current local and global evidence as well as stakeholder opinion suggests these have already become, or are rapidly becoming important priorities. These include overweight and obesity, dietrelated chronic diseases, nutrition of school-age children, and nutrition of the elderly. These nutrition issues, if not appropriately addressed, will continue to exact significant human health, economic, and social costs for Ghana. There is need for a comprehensive nutrition strategy that leverages opportunities across multiple sectors to improve nutrition for today and for the future. 
Torrente Ballester's novel La saga/fuga de J.B. as a rehabilitation of imaginative prose
No full textWhen the novel La saga/fuga de J.B. (The Saga/Fugue of J.B.) came out in 1972, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (1910-1999) had a long and extensive literary career behind him, but one which was marked by failures and the indifference of readers and critics. This novel, however, caused a sensation and was highlighted as Spain's answer to the Latin American "boom", as a proof that resourcefulness and unfettered imagination have their place in the Old World too… So although this was the author's magnum opus, which has naturally been the subject of a wide variety of studies and analyses, I think it has not been completely exhausted as a theme. In my work I attempt to perceive it not as a unique work of artistic creation by the author but also as the logical outcome of previous writing - it is this perception that I find lacking in the literature available on the novel and its author. For La Saga/fuga de J.B. contains constants in it which appear in a different form in Torrente Ballester's work from 1943, when he made his debut as a novelist with his book Javier Mario.Historia de una conversión/Javier Mario. Scoping review of diet-related health outcomes and associated risk factors in Ghana
No full textAs part of a process to develop food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs), the national Multi-sectoral Technical Task Team coordinating FBDGs development in Ghana has commissioned a desk review of the nutrition and health situation, and trends for all persons living in Ghana, across the entire life cycle. Using a rapid scoping review method, multiple electronic databases were systematically searched using keywords related to nutrition and health outcomes, as well as potential drivers of nutrition and health in Ghana. The review included evidence from peer-reviewed articles, unpublished manuscripts, dissertations, reports of nationally representative surveys, and other grey literature (reports of nutrition situation evaluations commissioned by international and local agencies), spanning the decade starting from 2010. A total of 48 documents were included in this review: 15 for infants and young children, 14 for adolescents, 19 for adults and women of reproductive age, and five for the elderly. Among children under five, anemia and stunting were the most prevalent nutritionrelated outcomes, 62% and 19%, respectively. Underweight prevalence of 11% was observed among young children; wasting rates have remained below 10%, but registered about 20% prevalence in northern Ghana. Different levels of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency were reported across all age groups. Nutrient deficiency rates were higher among adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. Vitamin A deficiency was also high (21%) among under-fives. Overweight and obesity rates were high among women of reproductive age (40%) and adolescents (11% to 18% between 2013 and 2017), and still increasing. Underweight and overweight coexists among the elderly (50 years and above), at a rate of 10% and 20%, respectively. An increasing prevalence of central adiposity has also been reported among women of reproductive age (high waist circumference of 80.6%) and persons older than 60 years (67% in 2015). Rates of hypertension and cancers have also increased within the study period. Hypertension rates have been increasing with age, particularly among urban dwellers. Majority of persons with hypertension are not receiving treatment . Incidence of breast, cervical, and liver cancers were 20%, 14%, and 12% in 2018. Ghana is experiencing a double burden of malnutrition characterized by co-existing high levels of undernutrition and overnutrition. The national FBDGs for Ghana should prioritize recommendations and actions that address the dual burden of undernutrition and overnutrition

MacKinnon posits that many of us romanticize nature as a sacred place ( one of succor and comfort) overlooking that most places visited have been tamed by humans. The absence of real wildness (predators that can kill us) creates an imaginary connection with nature instead of a tangible one.
