Gert-Jan van Ommen, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 2 February 2012. Van Ommen is a leading human geneticist from the Netherlands and the former head of the Department of Human Genetics at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). He served as President of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Europe from 1995-1997, and President of HUGO from 1998-2000. HUGO played an integral role in the international organization and administration of the HGP. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014. Thomas Caskey, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 2 March 2012. Caskey directed the genome center at Baylor College of Medicine—a recipient of some of the first NIH HGP mapping and early sequencing grants—until 1994. (In 1996 this center became the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center, ultimately one of the five most productive sequencing centers of the HGP.) After leaving Baylor, Caskey became Senior Vice President, Human Genetics and Vaccines Discovery, at Merck Research Laboratories, where he oversaw funding for the Merck Gene Index Project. This initiative, a partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, used Merck funds to place EST sequences in the public domain for research and development. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014. Eliot Marshall, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 22 March 2012. Eliot Marshall is a staff writer for Science Magazine. He has covered topics including genome sequencing, science policy, patents, and other medical research and health policy issues. His reporting covered the HGP and the Bermuda Principles extensively. Though not a participant in the Bermuda meetings, Marshall’s work as a science writer allowed him to view the events from both the scientific and public perspectives. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014. Keywords: Human Genome Project, HGP, interview, Bermuda Principles, Bermuda Accord, International Strategy Meetings on Human Genome Sequencing, data sharing, science policy, genomics, genome, genome sequence, genetics, DNA sequence, DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, NIH, National Institutes of Health, DOE, Department of Energy, Science Magazine, science policy, science writing, Eliot Marshall. This research was supported by the NHGRI-funded Duke Center for Public Genomics, P50 HG 003391, with supplementary funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation

LaDeana Hillier, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 5 April 2012. Hillier was director of informatics at the Washington University Genome Sequencing Center in St. Louis, beginning in 1989 and continuing through the end of the HGP. While there, she held responsibility for transitioning all of the EST sequence information from the Merck Gene Index Project into the public nucleotide databanks. It was in this capacity that she participated in the Bermuda meetings. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014. Keywords: Human Genome Project, HGP, interview, Bermuda Principles, Bermuda Accord, International Strategy Meetings on Human Genome Sequencing, data sharing, science policy, genomics, genome, genome sequence, genetics, DNA sequence, DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, NIH, National Institutes of Health, DOE, Department of Energy, Washington University Genome Sequencing Center, Merck Gene Index Project, EST sequencing, LaDeana Hillier. This research was supported by the NHGRI-funded Duke Center for Public Genomics, P50 HG 003391, with supplementary funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation

Yoshiyuki Sakaki, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 1 December 2011. From 1995-1998, Yoshiyuki Sakaki, formerly of the University of Tokyo, was a leader on the four-team Japanese Human Genome Sequencing Project funded by the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) of the Science and Technology Agency (STA). In 1998, this effort was relocated to RIKEN, the most prestigious research institution in Japan, and consolidated under the sole leadership of Sakaki until the completion of the HGP. This transcript is available beginning 1 July 2014. It includes follow-up questions completed via email.
