Vernon Cook discusses his career at REO Motor Car Company and Diamond REO Trucks, Inc.
Vernon Cook recalls working at REO Motor Car Company/Diamond-Reo Trucks, Inc, in Lansing, Mi, between 1944 and 1948. Cook says that much of his family worked at REO, including his future wife and that company culture dominated their lives. He describes factory working conditions, the REO Clubhouse, seeing the "Baby REO" car on display, the 1937 sit-down strike, and listening to WREO, the company radio station. He also talks at length about his job as a stock chaser in the plant and describes how trucks were built, tested and then dismantled for export. Interviewers are Shirley Bradley and Lisa Fine. Clubhouse, Mercedes Golf Club, Mercedes, Texas
Image of the clubhouse building at the Llano Grande Country Club House. This was the one of many buildings in the Mercedes area designed by architect R. Newell Waters. Construction began in 1928. The structure was built of hollow tile covered with stucco, with a Spanish tile roof and reinforced concrete foundation. A tower was located on the west side, and the first floor contained a ladies' parlor, men's locker rooms, and showers. Grape-Fruit Entering Canning Plant, Mercedes, Texas

Grapefruit originated as a natural hybrid between a Jamaican sweet orange and the Indonesian pomelo. Entrance to the Chamber of Commerce, Mercedes, Texas
Image of the entryway of the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce, formerly the Elks Lodge. The first of several Mercedes buildings designed by architect R. Newell Waters, the entrance of the Elks Club Building features ornamental brickwork, a detailed arched doorway, and Mediterranean light fixtures, and a large clock above the door. The exterior was brick covered stucco and the roof was red tile. "Moving to Tassie": a brief examination of internal migration to Tasmania
This paper is drafted in response to the population roundtable held on the 2 May 2019 and led by Dr Lisa Denny from the Institute for the Study of Social Change, University of Tasmania. From this discussion, researchers from the University of Tasmania, James Cook University and Western Sydney University developed a research project carried out in the latter half of 2019 to better understand the motivating factors in the decision to move to Tasmania. This included a survey distributed online, qualitative interviews conducted across the island and some online observation in collaboration with online community groups (especially the That's it I'm moving to Tassie Facebook group)
Confirming Dr. Lisa Cook to the Fed
On May 10, 2022, Dr. Lisa Cook was confirmed by a 51-50 vote in the U.S. Senate as the first Black woman to join the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. A coalition of groups supporting her nomination worked to counter attacks from Republican senators with a track record of targeting nominees of color and to contain the impact of right-wing critics on social media. A comprehensive communications strategy built around emphasizing her experience and expertise included tactics to prevent racialized attacks on Dr. Cook from becoming mainstream. Identifying a clear opposing figure, depriving social media trolls of amplification, and turning the phenomenon of white privilege to her advantage all played a role in the public interest communications strategy that aided Dr. Cook’s successful confirmation
