GCM simulations of the Indian Ocean dipole influence on East African rainfall: present and future.
Get PDFSix coupled GCMs are assessed in terms of their ability to simulate observed characteristics of East African rainfall, the Indian Ocean dipole and their temporal correlation. Model results are then used to analyze the future behaviour of rainfall and the DMI. All models simulate reasonably well the spatial distribution and variability of annual and seasonal rainfall over the 1961–1990 period. Model simulation of observed DMI characteristics is less consistent with observations, however, five models reproduce similar correlations to those observed between the DMI and East African short rains (SON). In the future, there are no clear inter-model patterns of rainfall or DMI behaviour. In this sample of models four (two) out of six simulate modest increases (decreases) in annual rainfall by the 2080s. For SON, three of the six models indicate a trend towards increasingly positive phase of the DMI, two indicate a decrease and one shows no substantial change

Effects of disturbed sleep on work ability and well-being among european nurses
No full textAim: This study is aimed at assessing whether disturbed sleep predict impaired work ability and other psycho-physical work-related outcomes among European nurses working in different shift systems.
Methods: A cohort of 10301 staff nurses working in state-owned and private hospitals in 8 European countries has been examined within the framework of the Nurses’ Early Exit Study. A one-year follow-up study was conducted with data collected through self-administered questionnaires. A 4-item scale assessed sleep quality and quantity. Sleep was split into tertiles on the basis of sample distribution. Four dichotomized outcomes were considered: emotional exhaustion, job dissatisfaction, thinking of quitting nursing, and the Work Ability Index. For each outcome, a multivariate logistic regression model was conducted to predict the risk of becoming a new disease case one year later, with adjustments made for country, age, gender, employment contract, family status, possibility to find another job in health care in the same area, work to familiy conflict and influence at work.
Results: In the adjusted analysis, being in the lower sleep tertiles was prospectively associated with an increased risk for health and well-being across all outcomes considered, with Odds Ratios ranging from 1.34 to 2.88. Job dissatisfaction and emotional exhaustion resulted as the most affected outcomes

An atheoretic evaluation of success in structural adjustment
Get PDFThe author presents and implements a methodology for assessing the success of structural adjustment based on a"fixed effect"method. He examines data for 75 countries over 11 years. Performance indicators include measures of inflation, economic growth, external balance, and physical investment. He measures government policies in terms of spending, trade regime, financial deepening, and real exchange rate policy. The empirical estimates he obtains suggest that ranking countries by adjusted economic performance yields significantly different results than ranking them by historical performance. Further, countries following a prescription of relatively low government spending, deep financial markets, and outward orientation in trade policy performed significantly better than those that did not. This prescription was correlated significantly with more rapid economic growth, current accounts with lower deficits, expanded investment, and reduced inflation.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Macroeconomic Management,Achieving Shared Growth,Economic Stabilization
