    Sous-facteurs de L(F∞) d'indice 4cos2π/n,n≥3

Let Q be a factor of type II1, λ a number in the Jones discrete series {4cosπ/m:m≥3}, and {ei} the Jones projections associated with λ. Denote by A2n and A1n the finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras generated, respectively, by {1,e2,⋯,en} and {1,e1,⋯,en}, with the corresponding traces. The author shows that, for n sufficiently large, the index of the inclusion An=(Q⊗A2n)∗A2nA1n⊂(Q⊗A2n+1)∗A2n+1A1n+1=An+1 is equal to λ (here ∗ denotes the reduced, amalgamated free product of the algebras in question). Using the random matrix model of Voiculescu, he proves that if Q is the von Neumann algebra L(F∞) of the free group with infinitely many generators, then An is isomorphic to L(F∞). The two facts together imply the existence, for any λ in the Jones discrete series, of an irreducible subfactor of L(F∞) of index λ. This constitutes the first example of a nonhyperfinite, non-Γ II1 factor such that its Jones invariant is fully computable (the existence of nonirreducible subfactors of L(F∞) for any index ≥4 is a simple consequence of known results)

The volume collects the expanded and revised versions of the presentations discussed during the conference titled "Politics and Administration. Ethics, Managerialism, and Accountability," organized in honour of Gianfranco D’Alessio. The focus is on administrative leadership, discussed and analysed from two perspectives. Firstly, in relation to the constitutional principles of impartiality and good administration. Secondly, with reference to the relationship it establishes with political bodies. The topic is approached from various angles and multiple perspectives, reflecting the diversity of skills and experiences, both professional and academic, of each author

Comparative techno-economic analysis of ORC and gasification for bioenergy applications

The use of biomass for decentralized energy production has undergone a significant development the last years. The fact that this fuel is CO(2)-free provides many advantages in European and world aims for sustainable energy sources. Biomass trigeneration is a relatively new concept, which has the potential to improve the bioenergy economics for areas with warm climate, for which traditional biomass cogeneration was unfeasible. This concept can be applied with various energy conversion technologies, two of which are investigated in this paper: ORC and gasification. Both technologies are applied for a specific case study. The technological and financial comparison of the two technologies shows that gasification offers improved yield for the investment, mainly due to the higher electrical efficiency factor. However, attention should be placed to the increased investment risk of gasification projects, which could be an aversive factor for some investors. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

A hybrid GA–PS–SQP method to solve power system valve-point economic dispatch problems

    No full text
This study presents a new approach based on a hybrid algorithm consisting of Genetic Algorithm (GA), Pattern Search (PS) and Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) techniques to solve the well-known power system Economic dispatch problem (ED). GA is the main optimizer of the algorithm, whereas PS and SQP are used to fine tune the results of GA to increase confidence in the solution. For illustrative purposes, the algorithm has been applied to various test systems to assess its effectiveness. Furthermore, convergence characteristics and robustness of the proposed method have been explored through comparison with results reported in literature. The outcome is very encouraging and suggests that the hybrid GA–PS–SQP algorithm is very efficient in solving power system economic dispatch problem

Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either

Let F be a non-archimedean local field with residual characteristic p, and k an algebraically closed field with characteristic l, where l different from p. Let Rep_k(SL_n(F)) be the category of smooth k-representations of SL_n(F). In this work, we establish the block decomposition of Rep_k(SL_n(F)) under the condition that p does not divide the order of the Weyl group of SL_n(F).Affiliation changed. The author corrects some errors in section 4 and section 5 in the previous versio

Effect of tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes on structural, morphological and mechanical properties of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) films

    No full text
Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is a semicrystalline, biocompatible and biodegradable polymer widely employed in many applications (food packaging, biomedical devices, drug delivery systems). This work deals with nanocomposites of PLLA and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes (NTs) as a novel material to obtain thinner and stronger bioresorbable vascular scaffolds. We studied the influence of WS2 NTs on the mechanical properties of PLLA-WS2 films. Polarized optical microscopy reveals a high degree of orientation of the polymer molecules in stretched films that further increases with a post-stretching annealing treatment. At the same time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirm enhancement of the crystallinity induced by the WS2 NTs. © 2018 Author(s)

Gehrmann L, Pati MR. L-invariants for cohomological representations of PGL(2) over arbitrary number fields. Forum of Mathematics, Sigma. 2024;12: e71.**Abstract** Let π\pi be a cuspidal, cohomological automorphic representation of an inner form G of PGL2\operatorname {{PGL}}_2 over a number field F of arbitrary signature. Further, let p\mathfrak {p} be a prime of F such that G is split at p\mathfrak {p} and the local component πp\pi _{\mathfrak {p}} of π\pi at p\mathfrak {p} is the Steinberg representation. Assuming that the representation is noncritical at p\mathfrak {p} , we construct automorphic L\mathcal {L} -invariants for the representation π\pi . If the number field F is totally real, we show that these automorphic L\mathcal {L} -invariants agree with the Fontaine–Mazur L\mathcal {L} -invariant of the associated p -adic Galois representation. This generalizes a recent result of Spieß respectively Rosso and the first named author from the case of parallel weight 22 to arbitrary cohomological weights. </p
