The ATLAS RPC Level-1 muon trigger: design and simulation

    No full text
The three-levels ATLAS trigger system has been designed to reduce the initial LHC interactions rate from 1 GHz to similar to100 Hz in order to allow permanent data storage. This result must be achieved preserving the less probable physics signals against a large background therefore providing a challenge task for the trigger and DAQ system. The Level-1 muon trigger in the barrel region of the Muon Spectrometer is provided by Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) working in avalanche mode. More than 1000 RPC Units of different sizes will be installed covering a surface of about 3650 m(2) with a 350,000 readout channels. A detailed simulation of the Level-1 has been developed in order to optimize the trigger logic design and to study his performances. A description of the Level-1 trigger in the barrel and preliminary results of his performances will be presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. RI Veneziano, Stefano/J-1610-201

Search for high-mass diboson resonances with boson-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8TeV with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
Abstract: A search is performed for narrow resonances decaying into WW, WZ, or ZZ boson pairs using 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 \sqrts=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Diboson resonances with masses in the range from 1.3 to 3.0 TeV are sought after using the invariant mass distribution of dijets where both jets are tagged as a boson jet, compatible with a highly boosted W or Z boson decaying to quarks, using jet mass and substructure properties. The largest deviation from a smoothly falling background in the observed dijet invariant mass distribution occurs around 2 TeV in the WZ channel, with a global significance of 2.5 standard deviations. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times branching ratio for the WZ final state of a new heavy gauge boson, W′, and for the WW and ZZ final states of Kaluza-Klein excitations of the graviton in a bulk Randall-Sundrum model, as a function of the resonance mass. W′ bosons with couplings predicted by the extended gauge model in the mass range from 1.3 to 1.5 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.[Figure not available: see fulltext.

Measurement of the branching ratio Gamma(Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0)/G(Λb0→J/ψΛ0) with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
An observation of the Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0 decay and a comparison of its branching fraction with that of the Λb0→J/ψΛ0 decay has been made with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.6 fb-1. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their decays to a muon pair, while the Λ0→ pπ- decay is exploited for the Λ0 baryon reconstruction. The Λb0 baryons are reconstructed with transverse momentum pT>10 GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2.1. The measured branching ratio of the Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0 and Λb0J/ψΛ0 decays is Gcyrillic(Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0/Gcyrillic(Λb0J/ψΛ0)=0.501±0.033(stat)±0.019(syst), lower than the expectation from the covariant quark model

Measurement of the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime and mass in the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime and mass in the decay channel Lambda(0)(b) -> J/psi (mu(+) mu(-))Lambda(0)(p pi(-)) is presented. The analysis uses a signal sample of about 2200 Lambda(0)(b) and (Lambda) over bar (0)(b) decays that are reconstructed in 4.9 fb(-1) of ATLAS pp collision data collected in 2011 at the LHC center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A simultaneous mass and decay time maximum likelihood fit is used to extract the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime and mass. They are measured to be tau(Lambda b) = 1.449 +/- 0.036(stat) +/- 0.017(syst) ps and m(Lambda b) = 5619.7 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 1.1(syst) MeV. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.87.03200

Search for resonant diboson production in the WW/WZ -> lvjj decay channels with the ATLAS detector at root s=7 TeV

A search for resonant diboson production using a data sample corresponding to 4.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV is presented. The search for a narrow resonance in the WW or WZ mass distribution is conducted in a final state with an electron or a muon, missing transverse momentum, and at least two jets. No significant excess is observed and limits are set using three benchmark models: WW resonance masses below 940 and 710 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for spin-2 Randall-Sundrum and bulk Randall-Sundrum gravitons, respectively; WZ resonance masses below 950 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for a spin-1 extended gauge model W' boson

Search for pair production of a new heavy quark that decays into a W boson and a light quark in pp collisions at s =8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
A search is presented for pair production of a new heavy quark (Q) that decays into a W boson and a light quark (q) in the final state where one W boson decays leptonically (to an electron or muon plus a neutrino) and the other W boson decays hadronically. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No evidence of QQ ̄ production is observed. New chiral quarks with masses below 690 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming BR(Q→Wq)=1. Results are also interpreted in the context of vectorlike quark models, resulting in the limits on the mass of a vectorlike quark in the two-dimensional plane of BR(Q→Wq) versus BR(Q→Hq)

Measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
This paper describes a measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events produced in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses the full 2010 data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 39 pb(-1). Six possible combinations of light, charm and bottom jets are identified in the dijet events, where the jet flavour is defined by the presence of bottom, charm or solely light flavour hadrons in the jet. Kinematic variables, based on the properties of displaced decay vertices and optimised for jet flavour identification, are used in a multidimensional template fit to measure the fractions of these dijet flavour states as functions of the leading jet transverse momentum in the range 40 GeV to 500 GeV and jet rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.1. The fit results agree with the predictions of leading-and next-to-leading-order calculations, with the exception of the dijet fraction composed of bottom and light flavour jets, which is underestimated by all models at large transverse jet momenta. The ability to identify jets containing two b-hadrons, originating from e. g. gluon splitting, is demonstrated. The difference between bottom jet production rates in leading and subleading jets is consistent with the next-to-leading-order predictions

Search for flavour-changing neutral current top quark decays t → Hq in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract: A search for flavour-changing neutral current decays of a top quark to an uptype quark (q = u, c) and the Standard Model Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson decays to(Formula Presented.), is presented. The analysis searches for top quark pair events in which one top quark decays to Wb, with the W boson decaying leptonically, and the other top quark decays to Hq. The search is based on pp collisions at (Formula Presented.) TeV recorded in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and uses an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. Data are analysed in the lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits the high multiplicity of b-quark jets characteristic of signal events, and employs a likelihood discriminant that uses the kinematic differences between the signal and the background, which is dominated by (Formula Presented.) decays. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is found, and observed (expected) 95% CL upper limits of 0.56% (0.42%) and 0.61% (0.64%) are derived for the t → Hc and t → Hu branching ratios respectively. The combination of this search with other ATLAS searches in the H → γγ and H → WW*, ττ decay modes significantly improves the sensitivity, yielding observed (expected) 95% CL upper limits on the t → Hc and t → Hu branching ratios of 0.46% (0.25%) and 0.45% (0.29%) respectively. The corresponding combined observed (expected) upper limits on the |λtcH| and |λtuH| couplings are 0.13 (0.10) and 0.13 (0.10) respectively. These are the most restrictive direct bounds on tqH interactions measured so far.[Figure not available: see fulltext.
