La soppressione dei conventi a Tagliacozzo nel decennio francese

    No full text

`Study of Neutral Current four fermion and ZZ production in collisions e+ e- at sqrt(s)=183 GeV

    No full text
A study of neutral-current four-fermion processes is performed using a data sample corresponding to 55.3 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The neutral-current four-fermion cross sections for final slates with a pair of charged leptons plus jets and with four charged leptons are measured to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. Events with fermion pair masses close to the Z boson mass are selected in all observable final states and the ZZ production cross section is measured to be sigma ZZ = 0.30(-0.16-0.03)(+0.22 + 0.07) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence for the existence of anomalous triple gauge boson ZZZ and ZZ gamma couplings is found and limits on these couplings are set. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Level-1 Trigger Muon Barrel System of the ATLAS experiment at CERN

    No full text
The ATLAS Level-1 Muon Barrel Trigger is one of the main elements of the first stage of event selection of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The challenge of the Level-1 system is a reduction of the event rate from a collision rate of 40 MHz by a factor 103, using simple algorithms that can be executed in highly parallel custom electronics with a latency of the order of 1 mu s. The input stage of the Level-1 Muon consists of an array of processors receiving the full granularity of data from a dedicated detector (Resistive Plate Chambers in the Barrel). This first stage of the algorithm is performed directly on-detector, while the final stage is performed in boards mounted in the counting room, by the so-called off-detector electronics. The trigger algorithm is executed within a fixed latency, its real-time output is the multiplicity of muon candidates passing a set of programmable p(T) thresholds, and their topological information. The detector system and the trigger electronics are designed to achieve a safe bunch-crossing identification. In order to optimize design effort and cost, the trigger system integrates also the readout of the detector, with its own requirements on time resolution and overall data bandwidth. We present the detailed functional requirements of the Level-1 Muon Barrel system, its architecture, implementation and construction

Influence of yeasts and of their constituents on nucleoside uptake in peritoneal murine macrophages

    No full text
A marked reduction of [3H]-uridine uptake was observed when mouse peritoneal macrophages (pM phi) were exposed to heat-killed Candida albicans or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. By contrast, an increased nucleoside uptake was promoted by yeast products such as zymosan, laminarin, or yeast cell-wall extracts, which are mainly composed of beta-glucans and alpha-mannans. In a search for the active fungal component(s), the uptake process was shown to be differently affected by monosaccharides and polysaccharides. These findings support the view that a specific recognition of a pM phi membrane receptor is mediating the effect of the various substances

Nucleoside uptake in macrophages from various murine strains: a short-time and a two-step stimulation model

    No full text
Kinetics of [3H]-uridine uptake by murine peritoneal macrophages (pM phi) is early altered after exposure to a variety of stimuli. Alterations caused by Candida albicans, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) were similar in SAVO, C57BL/6, C3H/HeN and C3H/HeJ mice, and were not correlated with an activation process as shown by the amount of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) being released. Short-time exposure to all stimuli resulted in an increased nucleoside uptake by SAVO pM phi, suggesting that the tumoricidal function of this cell either depends from the type of stimulus or the time when the specific interaction with the cell receptor is taking place. Experiments with priming and triggering signals confirmed the above findings, indicating that the increase or the decrease of nucleoside uptake into the cell depends essentially on the chemical nature of the priming stimulus. The triggering stimulus, on the other hand, is only able to amplify the primary response
