Connell Rogers letter to Col. John Q. Tufts, 1884
Connell Rogers, clerk for the Union Agency in Indian Territory, wrote this synopsis of the Army’s effort to remove trespassers from the Cherokee “Strip.” It is dated August 18, 1884. The altercation became heated between Payne, leader of the “Boomers,” and General Hatch. The leaders of the trespassers were arrested, and the arrested removed to the state of Kansas. The government authorities burned some buildings and allowed the squatters to remove some lumber composing other buildings.Rogers proclaims his success at removing the squatters at the end of this letter
