No full textStarting from the experience of the author on a stage translation of Aristophanes’ Plutus (Plutocrazia. Un contrasto economico, un collasso dialettico of Archivio Zeta) this chapter examines four problems that a contemporary translator of Aristophanes has to deal with: the translation of onomastì komodein, all the cultural or material Realien, paratragedy and parody, bad words and scoptic language. Never forgetting that the goal is a translation not a rewriting of the comedy, this chapter focuses in particular on the importance of the text’s destination and of the contemporary audience

Nel tentativo di fornire (provvisorie) risposte a tali quesiti, il contributo passa in rassegna alcuni diffusi elementi di debolezza che talvolta possono inficiare l’approccio dei classical reception studies ai loro oggetti di indagine. /
Can the so-called “classical receptions studies” really be considered an independent research field? Or is it more appropriate to consider them a heterogeneous set of scientific practices of various origins and nature? In order to provide some (provisional) answers to these questions, the paper reviews some widespread fallacies that sometimes can weaken the classical reception studies’ approach to their objects of analysis

Men. 95e, the much debated expression ὀλίγον μεταβάς that introduces the quotation of Theogn. 434-438 should not be interpreted in a spatial sense (“a little further on” or similar), and so does not allow any deduction about the form of the Theognidean collection in Plato’s time. The expression means “changing his mind a little”, and must be understood in the light of passages such as Phaedr. 261e-262a: Theognis’ “small change of opinion” leads to complete self-contradiction. This interpretation may also explain the strange way in which Socrates quotes ll. 434-438: he changes the order and the logic of the elegy to represent the gradual process of contradiction that makes Theognis’ thought uncertain and inconsistent
