The Sinhala Maymataya, A Translation into English
This is a translation into English by Bonnie G. MacDougall of the Mayimataya, a Sinhalese language work on housebuilding written by an unknown Sri Lankan author in 1837. The Sinhala Mayimataya is part of a modern language genre of housebuilding works circulated as inexpensive pamphlets or
chapbooks throughout the South Asian culture area. The Mayimataya, like other works of its type, claims to be based on authoritative texts in
Sanskrit. It contains 283 four lined verses
A Novel Teaching Tool Combined With Active-Learning to Teach Antimicrobial Spectrum Activity
Objective. To design instructional methods that would promote long-term retention of knowledge of antimicrobial pharmacology, particularly the spectrum of activity for antimicrobial agents, in pharmacy students. Design. An active-learning approach was used to teach selected sessions in a required antimicrobial pharmacology course. Students were expected to review key concepts from the course reader prior to the in-class sessions. During class, brief concept reviews were followed by active-learning exercises, including a novel schematic method for learning antimicrobial spectrum of activity ("flower diagrams"). Assessment. At the beginning of the next quarter (approximately 10 weeks after the in-class sessions), 360 students (three yearly cohorts) completed a low-stakes multiple-choice examination on the concepts in antimicrobial spectrum of activity. When data for students was pooled across years, the mean number of correct items was 75.3% for the items that tested content delivered with the active-learning method vs 70.4% for items that tested content delivered via traditional lecture (mean difference 4.9%). Instructor ratings on student evaluations of the active-learning approach were high (mean scores 4.5-4.8 on a 5-point scale) and student comments were positive about the active-learning approach and flower diagrams. Conclusion. An active-learning approach led to modestly higher scores in a test of long-term retention of pharmacology knowledge and was well-received by students
A decomposition theorem for homogeneous algebras
An algebra A is homogeneous if the automorphism group of A acts transitively on the one dimensional subspaces of A. Suppose A is a homogeneous algebra over an infinite field k. Let L-a denote left mulfiplication by any nonzero element a is an element of A. Several results are proved concerning the structure of A in terms of L-a. In particular, it is shown that A decomposes as the direct sum A = ker L-a circle plus Im L-a. These results are then successfully applied to the problem of classifying the infinite homogeneous algebras of small dimension.PT: J; CR: DJOKOVIC DZ, 1973, P AM MATH SOC, V41, P457 DJOKOVIC DZ, 1999, P AM MATH SOC, V127, P3169 GROSS F, 1971, P AM MATH SOC, V31, P10 IVANOV DN, 1982, VESTNIK MOSKOV U MAT, V37, P69 KOSTRIKIN AI, 1965, IZVESTIYA AKAD NAUK, V29, P471 MACDOUGALL JA, 1978, PAC J MATH, V74, P153 SHULT EE, 1969, ILLINOIS J MATH, V13, P654 SWEET LG, 1975, P AM MATH SOC, V48, P321 SWEET LG, 1975, PAC J MATH, V59, P385 SWEET LG, 1987, PAC J MATH, V129, P375; NR: 10; TC: 0; J9: J AUST MATH SOC; PN: Part 1; PG: 10; GA: 590RVSource type: Electronic(1

Queer Judgments ::Homosexuality, Expression, and the Courts in Canada /
Chapter 15 of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms now states that it is unconstitutional to discriminate on the basis of race, class, or sexual orientation. Although the letter of the law has been changed with regard to homosexuality, has the spirit of the people who implement the law been transformed as well?Judicial response to cases concerning the rights of lesbians and gay men - decisions and the language used in the ruling - has a profound impact on social perceptions. Bruce MacDougall sifts through hundreds of reported and unreported cases of the past four decades in order to uncover the subjective assumptions and biases operating in the courts. In his examination of issues including gay bashing, homosexuality and the school system, outing, and pornography the author exposes the insidiousness of homophobia in society. MacDougall also assesses the impact of individual judges on Canadian society. This study examines the rhetoric of judicial expression in connection with a vast array of material on the subject of homosexuality. MacDougall's style is refreshingly conversational, and "Queer Judgments", with its critical perspective, celebrates the reforms that have been achieved and suggests strategies for social change

Emerg Infect Dis
To determine patterns and predictors of antimicrobial drug use for outpatients with community-acquired pneumonia, we examined office visit and pharmacy claims data of 4 large third-party payer organizations from 2000 to 2002. After patients with coexisting conditions were excluded, 4,538 patients were studied. Despite lack of coexisting conditions, fluoroquinolone use was commonly observed and increased significantly (p or =65 years (40%) (p < 0.001). Increased use of fluoroquinolones occurred in healthy young and old patients alike, which suggests a lack of selectivity in reserving fluoroquinolones for higher risk patients. Clear and consistent guidelines are needed to address the role of fluoroquinolones in treatment of outpatient community-acquired pneumonia
