Stakeholders’ Perception Of Social Media Engagement With Al-Hikmah University Community Development Initiatives
The proliferation of social media platforms has transformed the landscape of communication, with universities leveraging the platforms to showcase community development initiatives. However, the stakeholders\u27 perception of the coverage of Nigerian universities development initiatives on social media remains understudied. This study investigates the stakeholders\u27 perception of social media coverage of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria, community development initiatives in order to establish the attitude of Al-Hikmah University stakeholders towards social media coverage of the university\u27s community development initiatives. Mixed research paradigms of quantitative (survey) and qualitative (in-depth interview) served as the research methods, while a questionnaire and in-depth interview guide were the instruments for data collection from the university stakeholders, which comprised students, staff, and members of the university stakeholders\u27 forum. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. The findings showed that stakeholders perceived social media to have promoted the reputation of the university by facilitating stakeholders’ engagement with the university development initiatives. This study, therefore, recommended a multi-faceted approach, encompassing diversification of social media platforms, emphasis on Islamic values and mission, and stakeholder engagement monitoring to refine the university\u27s social media strategy and community development initiatives
An exploration of community development initiatives as a tool for promoting social connectedness
This thesis includes the submission of six published journal articles with accompanying critical commentaries, in accordance with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)’s regulations for DPhil degrees. The submitted body of work provides evidence that I meet the requirements for such degrees, as identified in UWE Bristol’s doctoral descriptors. The thesis makes a significant contribution to the existing evidence by exploring ways in which community development initiatives might be used as a tool to promote social connectedness. The projects that are showcased in the submission’s publications share a symbiotic relationship across a range of community approaches, all of which have the potential to promote social connectedness within communities and therefore reduce social isolation and loneliness. The findings demonstrate how processes of social connectedness can be enhanced and supported through attention to the wider components of community development initiatives, such as social prescribing and microgrant funding schemes. They also emphasise the need for collaboration across community organisations and highlight the importance of including members of the public – particularly the seldom heard – in participatory and decision-making processes. Within the context of the pandemic, the thesis also considers the impact of social upheaval on community development initiatives by exploring alternative ways of maintaining social connections and supporting resilience in the wake of the crisis. Lastly, the findings also highlight the need to develop and utilise appropriate methodologies for the evaluation of community development initiatives which consider the importance of context within dynamic and complex public health systems. This includes establishing appropriate feedback and data collection mechanisms that allow evaluators to capture a range of voices and to successfully verify outcomes. Through the critical commentaries provided, I highlight my intellectual contributions to each piece of research and the publications presented herein, demonstrating my research skills and a range of competencies that match the doctoral descriptors outlined in section 1.2
