In 1930, Henri Fauconnier was awarded the Goncourt [Litererary] Prize for his novel, Malaisie. It takes place within the context of a Selangor plantation, which he himself had opened at the beginning of the century. This article draws upon his family archives to understand better the personal journey of a writer born to a bourgeois family in Charente.
An analysis of several critical reviews of his novel resituates his work within the literary context of the time. If his novel is known for its extreme sensitivity to the Soul of Malaya (the title of one of the English translations) and is considered one of the best French texts on the subject, the impressionistic picture the author paints of his Malasian experiences places this novel outside of history and the first breaks within the colonial empire.Labrousse Pierre. No full textLe livre d’Henri Hours sur la fin de la Ligue à Lyon fait partie des incontournables de l’historiographie lyonnaise du XVIe siècle alors que très peu de lecteurs ont pu le consulter. C’est son principal paradoxe et c’est l’enjeu de cette édition. Thèse de l’École Nationale des Chartes soutenue en 1951, elle ne fut jamais publiée et conformément au règlement de cette École, elle a été jusqu’à présent incommunicable. Seuls ceux qui ont connu l’auteur ont pu un jour la lire, ce qui ne l’empêche pas encore aujourd’hui de figurer dans toutes les bibliographies concernant les guerres de Religion. Suite à son décès en 2017 et avec l’accord de sa famille, la Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés a décidé de publier pour la première fois ce mémoire pour le rendre accessible au public lyonnais et aux historiens des affrontements religieux. Henri Hours s’est attaché à analyser méticuleusement les derniers temps de la Ligue lyonnaise, les années cruciales 1593-1597. Depuis 1589, la ville avait basculé du côté de l’intransigeance catholique au point de rejeter son souverain, Henri IV, et d’entretenir un effort de guerre coûteux mais nécessaire dans une région traversée de frontières confessionnelles. L’évêque, Pierre d’Epinac, les consuls lyonnais, le gouverneur de la ville, les espions savoyards et espagnols, mais aussi les prédicateurs de rue et le petit peuple très enclin à s’alarmer, sont les principaux acteurs de ces événements. On touche ici les dimensions politiques et religieuses de l’histoire urbaine. Par les délibérations municipales, par les correspondances, par la production pamphlétaire et quelques récits de contemporains, Henri Hours dénoue l’écheveau du basculement politique de la ville vers la soumission au roi. En revenant sur les écrits de certains de ces acteurs, notamment Pierre Mathieu et Claude de Rubys, il interroge aussi la mémoire de l’évènement dans les consciences lyonnaises.Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon
