Spazi di confidenza: la regolazione della distanza sociale nella collaborazione domestica

    No full text

Novel platforms for oral drug delivery

    No full text
The aim of this review is to provide the reader general and inspiring prospects on recent and promising fields of innovation in oral drug delivery. Nowadays, inventive drug delivery systems vary from geometrically modified and modular matrices, more close to "classic" pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, to futuristic bio micro-electro-mechanical systems (bioMEMS), based on manufacturing techniques borrowed from electronics and other fields. In these technologies new materials and creative solutions are essential designing intelligent drug delivery systems able to release the required drug at the proper body location with the correct release rate. In particular, oral drug delivery systems of the future are expected to have a significant impact on the treatment of diseases, such as AIDS, cancer, malaria, diabetes requiring complex and multi-drug therapies, as well as on the life of patients, whose age and/or health status make necessary a multiple pharmacological approach. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

The role of husk traits in maize susceptibility to Fusarium verticillioides: A multi-location study in northern Italy

    No full text
Fusarium disease and the consequent mycotoxin accumulation pose significant problem in maize cultivation, with fumonisins produced by Fusarium verticillioides posing a global health concern. To address this issue, a range of preventive measures (e.g. crop management techniques) can be implemented to minimize fungal infections. A promising strategy to counteract this issue involves the selection of genotypes with greater resistance to fungal pathogens. This approach has the potential to reduce the reliance on chemical inputs for controlling fungus growth or indirect infection vectors. Leveraging genetic approaches can help improve the economic sustainability of agriculture in the face of climate change challenges. In the present work, we assessed the importance of two husk leaf traits (coverage and number), their association with F. verticillioides infection, fumonisin content, and their potential influence on crop yield. The study was conducted in three locations in the North of Italy and 38 hybrids with varying resistance to F. Verticillioides were compared. The results obtained showed that husk coverage has a pivotal role not only in protecting maize ears from Fusarium infection but have also a significant impact on crop yield: a significant positive correlation was found between husk coverage and yield in all three locations (r = 0.33185; r = 0.51327 and r = 0.51207, respectively). Furthermore, in the field of Vicenza, a significant negative correlation was found between husk coverage and Fusarium severity (r = -0.41492). Husk coverage emerges as an important trait that merits inclusion in maize breeding programs, given its protective role against fungal infections and its favourable influence on both yield and grain quality

Synthesis of Unnatural Alfa-N-linked Glycopeptides with Potential Antifreeze Activity

    No full text
The synthesis of neo-glycoconjugates has been gaining much attention in recent years due to the relevance of glycopeptides and glycoproteins in many biological processes.[i] Our group has been actively dedicating its efforts to the synthesis of α-N-linked glycosylamides and glycopeptides.[ii] α-N-linked glycopeptides are unnatural molecules, since they display an α linkage between the peptide side chain and the sugar moiety, unlike natural glycopeptides which connect the peptide to the glycan through a β-N-glycosidic bond. This novel type of glycosylation of peptides could introduce modifications that can mimic and/or interfere with molecular recognition events.[iii] Direct glycosylation of peptide chains is not viable for the synthesis of molecules with α-N-linked configuration, since the corresponding α-glycosyl amines isomerise to the β-anomers. Only very recently Nα-Fmoc-protected glycosyl amino acids have been efficiently and stereoselectively synthesized and linearly incorporated into a peptide sequence.[iii] In the present paper these novel building blocks have been employed for the synthesis of complex structures that resemble antifreeze glycopeptides (Figure 1).[iv] These sequences were prepared using solid phase synthesis with Fmoc protocol, experimenting with different conditions and also using microwave assisted solid phase synthesis, in an effort to enhance the reactivity of our unnatural building block. The α-N-linked glycopeptides were obtained with modest yields, their secondary structure was assessed by circular dichroism and their antifreeze properties were evaluated in the group of Prof. Robert N. Ben. Despite the fact that our compounds do not show significant antifreeze activity, this work constitutes the first attempt towards the synthesis of complex α-N-linked glycopeptides and has been useful to understand the behaviour, sometimes unexpected, of these molecules, in terms of reactivity and stability. Continuous Dependence in Conservation Laws with Phase Transitions

    No full text
This paper is concerned with systems of 2 x 2 conservation laws (star) partial derivative(t)u + partial derivative(x) [f(u)] = 0, t greater than or equal to 0, x is an element of R, u is an element of R-2, developing phase transitions, as happens in models related to elastodynamics or to van der Waals fluids, for instance. In the present paper, a definition of Psi-admissible solution to (star) is given which comprises the various definitions in the current literature. Furthermore, the Psi-admissible Riemann semigroup (Psi RS) generated by (star) is introduced and constructed by means of a wave-front tracking algorithm. Uniqueness and continuous dependence for Psi-admissible solutions to (star) thus follow
