The "Electric House" of Monza is seen as one of the early example of rationalist architecture produced in Italy. Sponsored by the Italian Edison General Company for Electricity and produced by the Group 7, it was built for the "TV International Triennial Exhibition of Decorative and Modern Industry Arts", held in Monza in 1930. It was conceived as an environment in which the designers showed their interest towards new concepts of rationalist hygiene. Special care was taken to select the environments in relation to the surrounding nature and the needs of life of the house inhabitants: new materials more comfortable, hygienic and rational were inserted. In the kitchen, for example, the architect P. Bottoni, created a space in which the housewife's work was marked by lower energy expenditure, thanks to a careful study of the actions and movements according to the principles of taylorism, here applied to domestic work

Fra esse spicca Quattroruote, rivista mensile per gli automobilisti di oggi e di domaniBetween the end of the fifties and the second half of the sixties the Italian car industry was one of the few in Europe to introduce technical changes for car safety. Some Italian popular magazines took part in this plan not only by an information and prevention campaign, but also by promoting experimental safety car projects. Among them Quattroruote, rivista mensile per gli automobilisti di oggi e di domani stands out

Design metrics for evaluating the propulsive efficiency of future ships

    No full text
There is an increasing need for the ship design process to take account of environmental issues such as the emission of greenhouse gases and the likely extension of a carbon dioxide charging mechanism to international shipping. These issues, together with the need for economic viability, provide further incentives to improve the efficiency of propulsion of ships. The main components of powering are firstly reviewed. Individual components and other power saving devices are identified which should contribute to improvements in the overall efficiency of propulsion. Suitable design metrics and procedures, taking into account economic and environmental factors, are recommended for the design of future ships

The essay reports the experience of the CAP (Centre of lifelong learning) at the University of Bari (Italy) and its activities in validation and certification of the learning competences, acquired in formal and informal contexts by those refugees and asylum seekers who have chosen to continue the curriculum studiorum interrupted in the country of origin. The CAP’s experience highlights how, for the refugee, the informal education is crucial within the processes of academic integration. For the University, this program represents an attempt to internationalize the academic system and to institutionalize the ‘finalized recognition’procedure, through comparability of qualifications and skill balance. The paper presents the state of art of the university integration of refugees, describing in brief the main projects carried out by Italian higher education institutions over the last years
