Response to Allen ‘An alternative hypothesis to the conclusion of Colman et al. (2014)’

    No full text
We respond to the criticisms of Allen regarding Colman et al., examining the differences in forest mammal assemblages between areas where dingoes were controlled and not controlled in southeastern Australia. Allen contends that Colman et al. did not show any evidence of dingo control in 'Treatment' sites; the positive relationship between dingo activity and small mammal abundance observed by Colman et al. was likely a product of bottom-up responses, and not due to indirect effects of dingo removal; and demonstrating trophic cascades resulting from top-predator control is only possible through manipulative experiments. In our response, we explain why we disagree with each of Allen's criticisms

    パメラ・コールマン・スミスとJ. M. バリー ― タロットカード「愚者」をめぐって―

    No full text
This paper forms part of a broader project that situates Pamela Colman Smith, illustrator of the Waite-Smith tarot deck, within cultural and literary history. It examines her relationship with J. M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, through the lens of the tarot card “The Fool.” A key figure linking the two is the celebrated Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry, whose role in early twentieth-century cultural networks created a point of contact between Colman Smith and Barrie. By tracing these connections, the study highlights the overlapping artistic circles in which they moved. The paper further investigates how formative childhood losses shaped both figures and influenced their creative output. Barrie’s brother’s death and Colman Smith’s early loss of her parents left enduring marks on their personalities and imaginations, producing shared themes of arrested growth and retreat into fantasy. Of particular importance is Colman Smith’s “Fool” card, where Barrie’s influence can be discerned even more strongly than that of Arthur Edward Waite, the occultist who supervised her illustrations of the tarot cards. Finally, the discussion turns to issues of gender and symbolism in both Peter Pan and “The Fool”. The analysis shows how Colman Smith challenged conventional views of gender by reimagining “The Fool” in ways that resist traditional male-centered depictions. At the same time, this paper proposes a new interpretive dimension: “The Fool” can be read not only as a symbol of innocence and new beginnings but also as an invitation to revisit one’s childhood when confronting present challenges. In this way, by considering Colman Smith’s work alongside Barrie’s, the paper positions “The Fool” card within broader cultural debates in literature, theatre, and early twentieth-century thought.departmental bulletin pape

A 'special relationship'? Harold Wilson, Lyndon B. Johnson and Anglo-American relations 'at the summit', 1964-68

    No full text
Harold Wilson and Lyndon Johnson held very different opinions about how the UK and the US were supposed to relate to each other, with Wilson supposing they were the closest of friends and Johnson supposing they were, at best, rich (the US) and poor (the UK) shirt-tail relations. Colman (international politics, U. of Wales, Aberystwyth) gives here the first comprehensive account of the complex and often frustrating personal and political relationships that lead to one of the most strained relationships ever between a president and prime minister. Using the summits of December 1964 to December 1968 as a framework, Colman traces the exchanges leading to what was in effect a declining relationship and disassociation as Johnson was dealing with events that would defeat him such as the war in Vietnam

Health impact assessment of benzene levels emitted by gas stations in the city of La Plata, Argentina

    No full text
Activities carried out in gas stations mainly filling processes expose the surrounding population to high levels of contamination due to the emissions originated in their normal operations. This work analyzes the impact of these emissions as diffused sources in the city of La Plata (Argentina) and assesses the risk of contracting cancer (LCR) from exposure to the benzene estimated concentrations. To achieve this goal, the AERMOD modeling system was used as a dispersion assessment tool. The results show that, although the estimated concentrations do not represent a risk for the surrounding population, they reach 7.2-8.5 % of the limit concentration recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (corresponding to a LCR of 1 x10-6), regarding chronic exposure to benzene in the adult population. However, the levels may be alarming when considering other significant sources in the region that have not been included in the modeling, such as the petrochemical industrial area and the emission of gases coming from motor vehicles.Fil: Lefevre, Maria L.. Atmospheric pollution

    No full text
Air pollution from anthropogenic sources has been and continues to be considered a serious environmental problem affecting public health. Its seriousness lies in the fact that pollutant levels rise in places that increase the likelihood of impact on human health. Therefore, air pollution is a major threat to public health worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than two million premature deaths per year are attributable to the effects of both indoor and outdoor air pollution. In addition, more than half of this disease burden is supported by the populations of developing countries. Epidemiological studies in several countries have shown that chronic exposure to traffic-related pollutants, chemicals and petrochemicals, such as particulate matter (PM), metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with PM, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and inorganic gases (SO2, NOx, O3) produce adverse effects on development and affect lung function; along with an increase in respiratory disease, often expressed in terms of a diagnosis of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular effects and increased mortality. In this sense, it is important to characterize and quantify air pollution, recognizing and evaluating the associated health effects. an adequate way to present these results (from public management) is the elaboration of an air quality index (AQI) that represents, in a simple way, the relationship between pollution levels and its possible health effects. To achieve this objective it is necessary to design and implement a monitoring network of atmospheric pollutants. In its design it is necessary to have clear objectives to be accomplished, which must be clear and concise, as well as the resources available to be carried out. The network alone is not sufficient to develop an integral program of air pollution control, but must be complemented by other tools including an inventory of gaseous emissions and the use of air pollutant dispersion modeling tools.Fil: Giuliani, Daniela Silvana.
