Inventory for a Reverse Journey. Photographic Image and Found Object - An investigation of travel and material transformation as a paradigm of artist's practice: Ed Ruscha, Douglas Huebler, Bas jan Ader, Jimmie Durham, Gustav Metzger, Kurt Schwitters & Cian Quayle.
Inventory for Reverse Journey is the title of a collection of photographic artefacts and found objects, which I have collected over the last twenty years. The title refers to one specific type of artist's journey, which is applicable to the `chronotope' of my archive, as a `metaphorical journey in space and time' (Bakhtin 1981, p. 81). The `city',`provincial town', `road', `threshold' and `interior' are recurrent motifs, which Bakhtin fused together to describe the historical evolution of the novel in relation to its different genres. Bakhtin's motifs are expanded as the basis of an evolutionary nomenclature of the artist's-journey, as a form of spatial mapping and identity formation. Alongside other sources from literature (Alain Robbe-Grillet), cinema (Michelangelo Antonioni), psychoanalysis (Kierkegaard) and critical theory (Walter Benjamin) I have developed a theoretical framework, which initially originated in an empirical process, that is reflected in the antecedents of this project. The research process, as a journey itself, has concretised this approach within a systems-based practice. This is mirrored in the work of the artists under investigation, as their differences and similarities are highlighted within a broad contextual analysis. Accordingly the tone of the writing shifts its register at different points in the thesis.
My journey is just one example of several paradigmatic formations of `travel' as a strategy, which investigates the work of six different artists, as a voluntary or involuntary form of exile. A deskilled use of the photographic image is examined in the work of Ed Ruscha, Douglas Huebler and Bas jan Ader in the spatial mapping of their chosen locations. The work of these artists manifests travel, as a strategy, in a benign form of regional and expatriate exile. The investigation shifts its focus from the New World to Europe, where the work of Jimmie Durham, Gustav Metzger and Kurt Schwitters is analysed in relation to their transformation of found objects and materials, and their relationship with a former 'home'. Their position registers different degrees of the `impossibility of return' to a point of origin, which exists in the mind rather than as a physical location. The transience of their work, and use of disparate materials, is counterbalanced by their physical presence in the work. Conversely Ader, Huebler and Ruscha are linked by a scale of decreasing visibility, as they are sublimated within their work in the formation of, what is now construed as, a unique photographic presence. The starting point for which is a return to the formative years of conceptualism in the 1960's, which set the scene for Durham and Metzger from the 1970's onwards. The spectre of Schwitters practice of forming (Formung) and unforming (Entformung) is significant for my analysis of the dematerialisation of the art-work and artist, by processes of series and repetition, distance and proximity, movement and stasis. Although `travel' is a ubiquitous term, I continue to use it as a portmanteau, which carries with it the themes and `salient' features of a typology of artist's journeys. In a moment of perceived obsolescence as digital information systems engender a culture of `selective-amnesia', these thoughts have informed my work, which runs parallel to the artist case-studies, and the material transformation of the photographic image and found object
Detours and Dislocations - Liverpool /Isle of Man / Vancouver: In the Footsteps of Malcolm Lowry
This exhibition is part of an ongoing body of work which references Malcolm Lowry's life and writing as a point of departure for Quayle's encounters with places, landscape and dwelling spaces which were significant for the life and writing of Malcolm Lowry, who was born in New Brighton in 1909. Lowry's formative experience and life-long interest in the sea was framed by his love hate relationship with Liverpool his adopted city. Lowry visited the Isle of Man twice as a child with his family and upon moving to Vancouver in 1941 was befriended by a retired Manx boat builder named Jimmy Craige. Lowry lived in a 'squatters shack' on the shoreline of the Burrard Inlet near Dollarton, North Vancouver. Quayle's artworks connect the topography and histories, which background Lowry's writing in relation to contemporary narratives based on the artist's response to the same or other locations encountered as part of a process predicated on travel and journeys. The indigenous, cultural and environmental context is manifest in Quayle's visit to Camp Cloud, a road-side encampment-based protest (opposing the trans mountain pipeline) on Burnaby Mountain, at the entrance of the Shellburn Oil refinery, which sat opposite Lowry's shack. An exhibition of artworks by Cian Quayle at the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, July 7 - August 26, 2018. The installation included a neon artwork/text, a 1/50 scale model, photographs, a lightbox mounted transparency, single channel video, loaned artworks (Chris John Symes and George Cuitt), hand-made photographs from glass plate negatives and an automated 35 mm carousel, slide-projection. The research triangulates, Wirral born author of Under the Volcano (1947), Malcolm Lowry's relationship with Liverpool, the Isle of Man and Vancouver as the basis of a psychogeographic encounter with places and sites of habitation, which held significance for Lowry's life and writing. The exhibition formed part of IB 18 (Independents Biennial) and was exhibited in conjunction with 'Tom Wood: Cammell Laird Shipyard 1993 - 1996'
The Pre-Roman commercial law seen by the dogmatic : remarks on the basis of the book "Le antiche leggi del commercio" of Marco Cian
The paper presents remarks made after reading the book of the Italian commer- cial law scholar, Marco Cian. His work considers ancient commercial statutes as prototypes of commercial law as such. Contrarily, the traditional doctrine recognizes the beginning of commercial law merely in medieval times. It is hard to find in antiquity the concept of commercial law similar to the modern one as a separate branch of private law. However, the chieftains of small Hebrew tribes or Pharaohs wanted to affect somehow the production or trade with their laws. Marco Cian concentrates on ancient Egypt, Mesopotamian codes, and Hebrew law. His last chapter is dedicated to Greek laws. It is seriously disappointing that the book omits issues connected with Roman law. Despite the fact that Roman legal experience is especially productive and instructive in that aspect and included in the title literally, the author decided that it has already been studied well enough by scholars

Manx Radio: Sunday Opinion
Quayle's invitation to participate in this broadcast emerged as a result of his research into the writing of Malcolm Lowry. Quayle featured an extract from Lowry's story 'Elephant and Colosseum' in his 2003 catalogue for the public, site-specific artwork 'Return Ticket' (Manx National Heritage & Isle of Man Arts Councl). In 2009 Quayle took part in the exhibition 'Under the Volcano' (curated by Bryan Biggs) at the Bluecoat, Liverpool. The exhibition was accompanied by a book publication entitled 'From the Mersey to the World' (eds. Bryan Biggs and Helen Tookey) published by the Bluecoat and Liverpool University Press. As part of Manx Litfest 2016 and a forerunner for a planned Manx Radio podcast of Malcolm Lowry's 'Elephant and Colosseum': Cian Quayle, Jane Killey and Doug Sandle (the author of the podcast transcript) were invited to take part in a discussion with broadcaster Roger Watterson on Manx Radio's Sunday Opinion. The contributors discussed Malcolm Lowry's life and writing and its connections with the Isle of Man, which feature in 'Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place' (1961) with specific reference to Elephant and Colosseum
Perception of Criteria for Supervisor’s Decisions and Its Effects on Subordinate’s Cognition, Emotion & Behavior ─A Reward Allocation Context
Chinese management style is strongly influenced by Chinese culture. In Chinese organization, supervisors will classify subordinates by using three criteria(guanxi, loyalty and competence), and their interactions with different categories of subordinates vary. It''s called employee categorization process. However, the perception of subordinate are ignored. Hence, in the study, the author takes the perspective of the subordinate, to know what the effects of subordinates are when they perceive the different criteria which the supervisors use to govern the decisions. In addition, explore power distance orientation as a moderator of the influence of the different criteria which the supervisors use to govern the decisions, and the relationship with the subordinate’s reactions. This study uses the scenario experiment with a reward allocation context, and between-subject design by the group of guanxi, loyalty, competence and baseline. Given the research results, compared with other groups, the group of competence has the highest justice perception, and the lowest turnover intention. Nevertheless, there is no difference in negative emotion between four groups. Moreover, power distance orientation of subordinate will moderate the relationship between justice perception and the different criteria which the supervisors use to govern the decisions. All assumptions in the research are mostly totally or partially verified. Finally, contributions and limitations are also discussed, and suggestions are provided for future studies and managerial practices in Chinese organizations
The pages of whiteness: theory, evidence, and the American immigration debate
The author traces the growth and decline of whiteness studies over the past two and a half decades, from the publication of David Roediger’s The Wages of Whiteness in the early 1990s to the present day. Although it accurately identified race as a social construct in modern society, ‘whiteness’ also employed over-simplifications that ultimately undermined its critical relevance. Nonetheless, the author demonstrates how the colourful career of ‘whiteness’ as a scholarly concept can inform contemporary debates over immigration and identity
Evaluating the performance of the LIME and Grad-CAM explanation methods on a LEGO multi-label image classification task
In this paper, we run two methods of explanation, namely LIME and Grad-CAM, on a convolutional neural network trained to label images with the LEGO bricks that are visible in them. We evaluate them on two criteria, the improvement of the network's core performance and the trust they are able to generate for users of the system. We nd that in general, Grad-CAM seems to outperform LIME on this specic task: it yields more detailed insight from the point of view of core performance and 80% of respondents asked to choose between them when it comes to the trust they inspire in the model choose Grad-CAM. However, we also posit that it is more useful to employ these two methods together, as the insights they yield are complementary.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
Solar Sailing Trajectory Design to Multiple Co-Orbital Near-Earth Asteroids
This paper investigates the use of solar sailing propulsion to visit as many co-orbital near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) as possible, within a fixed time-frame. This research builds on previous publications, which have shown solar sailing to be a suitable propulsion method to visit NEAs. The dynamics of this problem are modelled within the Solar Sail Augmented Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BPS), and assume a near-term solar sailing technology level. A sequence generation algorithm is developed which generates trajectories to visit multiple co-orbital NEAs beginning at either the artificial co-linear equilibrium point SL1 or SL2. This algorithm develops trajectories with fixed controls to transfer between target asteroids, using Monte Carlo simulations to propagate a wide range of random combinations of settings before selecting those that perform the best. It is shown that the tuning performed within this research can generate a trajectory that enables 18 asteroid fly-bys within the selected nominal mission lifetime of ten years. Following this sequence generation, the first fly-by of the trajectory is optimised as proof of concept that each leg of the trajectory can be optimised for fly-by distance and velocity. An optimal control problem is developed, which is then implemented and solved using direct pseudospectral methods. The solution to this optimal control problem reduces the fly-by distance by 99.95 %, down to 158.73 km, while reducing the fly-by velocity by 9.68 % to 4.33 km/s.Aerospace Engineerin
Reward Definitions in Reinforcement Learning for Traffic Light Control
Traffic congestion is a problem of tremendous size that affects many people. Using Reinforcement Learning to find a light control policy can ease traffic congestion and decrease travel time for vehicles. This paper specifically looks at the effect of using different reward functions for training agents. We highlight how the learnabilty of a reward function and its alignment with the final goal of the agent are the most important factors when designing a reward definition. Finally we propose a reward function to use for futureCSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
