Understanding Rhetoric: A Guide to Writing by Elizabeth Losh, Jonathan Alexander, Kevin Cannon, and Zander Cannon [Book Review]
The authors of Understanding Rhetoric utilize the comics medium to present writing concepts for first-year composition courses and beyond. The title is a nod to the foundational comics theory treatise by Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics, in which the animated author explores how comics make meaning through image and text. Like McCloud, Understanding Rhetoric’s authors explain rhetoric and writing through didactic content that directly addresses the reader. Losh, Alexander, Cannon, and Cannon take form as characters Liz, Jonathan, Kevin, and Zander in the textbook as they engage students and instructors alike through compelling narrative, humor, visual metaphors, thoughtful examples, and authentic author voices
268 - A Fossil Bugs Life in Conesus Lake
This study aims to investigate the subfossil record, preservation, and environmental sensitivity of lake insects in Conesus Lake (Livingston County, NY). The Finger Lakes, especially Conesus Lake, are critical sites for aquatic insect diversity and life stages. Fossil insects are primarily found in ancient lake sediments and are useful indicators of insect diversity, evolution, and ecological change. Therefore, Conesus Lake is an ideal system for investigating the aquatic insect subfossil record to use as a tool for understanding lake ecosystem health and preservation. Piston and bolivia cores were collected from the south basin of Conesus Lake. The cores were collected at 1.8 meters in water depth, composing a composite core of 154 cm. These cores were split, imaged, and analyzed using a Geotek multi-sensor core logger at Syracuse University. Sediments were sub-sampled at one-centimeter increments, sieved at 250 and 125 microns, and subfossil material was separated from the sediment. Insect exoskeletons, larval encasements, and head capsules were picked from the sediment and identified based on morphology and taxonomic affinity. 95 insect components were collected from 30 sediment horizons. Chironomid head capsules, insect carapaces, caddis fly larval encasements, wings, mandibles, legs, and unknown insect parts were found in lake sediments. Most commonly found were caddisfly encasings (34 encasings) and chironomid head capsules (29 heads). Caddis fly encasings were composed of plants or grains of sediment. Based on the preservation of caddis fly encasings and chironomid heads, these can be used as environmental indicators and proxies of historical change in Conesus Lake

Legal regulation of prices in Tanzania : an examination of the Regulation of Prices Act 1973 as a tool of social change and development
Drawing mainly from the Tazanian experience this study
attempts to review the principal issues in the legal regulation of
prices, by identifying both the general and specific importance
of law in this respect. The position I shall present is that
legal control is both necessary and desirable for the welfare
and social development of the people. The key issue is whether
the market-place will perform its function satisfactory: Will
it produce socially desirable results? If it will not, why will
it not? And will legal regulation help to do the job a little
better?
In an attempt to answer some of these questions,
first of all, outline the basic issues raised by the study in
the first Chapter. Then I examine the general case for price
controls - the theory about the controls, the motives and reasons
for their imposition and the manner in which they are effected
in different economic systems. This is done in Chapter Two. Relying
most on the available literature on the regulatory process, this
Chapter also looks at the relationship between law and economic
regulation and concludes that the effectiveness of law depends
on the existence of a conducive socio-economic environment. In
Chapter Three I describe the past record of price control laws
in Tanzania. I conclude that despite the failure in the past,
the controls still constitute an important policy instrument
in the transition to socialism. In Chapters Four and Five I describe
the manner in which the current regulations are implemented and
the problems encountered. I conclude that the operational performance
of the controls is constrained by internal and external influences on the economic and political life of the country. In the concluding
Chapter I assess the impact of the controls: Do the controls
work? Do people buy goods at the controlled prices? Why today
the controls are almost popularly accepted as worthwhile? I conclude
that while there may be no measurable economic gains derived
by consumers, the controls have a stabilising effect on the social
and political front. In the final section I argue that the
future success of the legislation depends on creating a correspondence
between the economic structures and the control system. What
makes the controls ineffective is not so much defects in the
law but the contradictions between the orientation of and functioning
of the economic system and the ideological commitment
The article that Georg Rusche published in the Frankfurter Zeitung constitues, in our opinion, even to this day the most valuable source for understanding the originality of his criminological thinking. With regard to the memory of an author whose main work is still missing we furnished the french edition of this article with comprehensive annotations. These annotations facilitate the modern reader the access to the origins of Ruschian criminology. In the introduction of our edition we publish a rather important document we found recently in the «Max Horkheimer Archives». Thanks to this document the reader may appreciate to what extent Kirchheimer interfered with the original manuscript of Rusche before publishing « Punishment and Social Structure ».Aux yeux des auteurs, l'article de la Frankfurter Zeitung constitue toujours la source la plus précieuse pour saisir l'originalité de la pensée cri- minologique de Georg Rusche. Levy René, Zander H. Molotov Alva’s Further Adventures: A Conversation Which Could’ve Happened (But Never Did)
The author uses a graphic novel approach to explore various aspects of machinima through the character Molotov Alva and his companion Orhalla Zander. Together they contemplate the nature of machinima. Is it an art or a technique? While machinima’s noblest goal, as defined by the author, is to live beyond the now and illuminate the human condition, do its game-based roots prevent it from going mainstream? </jats:p

A revised and updated literature-based checklist of Hawaiian mosses is presented. Geographic coverage includes the eight main Hawaiian Islands; the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are excluded. The checklist is alphabetically ordered by scientific names; the family is noted for each genus. Synonyms and misapplied names are cross-referenced to the accepted names. A bibliography of supporting references is included
Multihop Radio Networks in Random Terrain
In terrains where there is no telecommunication infrastructure, communication is often established by Multihop packet radio networks. These networks appear to be rather robust against equipment failure and interference. Previously proposed Routing algorithms as Maximum Forward within Range, in which packets of information are sent as far as possible in forward direction, and Nearest with Forward Progress, in which packets are sent to the nearest station in forward direction, have been investigated assuming propagation models which are only dependent on the distance between transmitter and receiver. In these investigations also the assumption has been made that the networks were connected. In hilly terrains this might not always be the case. In this report the effects of the terrain on the connectivity will be discussed by using a propagation model based on knife edge diffraction. Also two terrain adaptive routing algorithms, minimum hop and minimum-maximum path loss algorithm will be evaluated, using both a distance dependent model and a detailed terrain model.Applied SciencesElectrotechniekTelecommunicatie- en Verkeersbegeleidingssysteme
