The Scientific Collections of the Department of Architecture of Palermo preserve a patrimony constituted, beyond bibliographical material, from numerous drawings, prints, paintings, didactic tables and models in wood and chalk. In particular, the 103 chalk models of the “Collezione del Gabinetto di Disegno” are the subject of a study, still in progress, aimed at setting up the new Gipsoteca of the Department of Architecture in Viale delle Scienze. The paper presents the first results of a research about the preliminary investigations for the evaluation of the consistency and the state of conservation of the models in chalk and shows some guiding considerations for the preparation project. In addition, the ongoing investigation of bibliographic and archival sources will be able to accurately delineate the history of the different pieces present in the Collection and provide references to the original works. The preliminary operations to the models placement phase have proved to be a precious opportunity for a close examination not only of the formal and dimensional characteristics, but also of the material and “constructive” characteristics. The proposed “possible” set-up has as the purpose of exhibition aimed at knowledge, an opportunity for systematization - first with the other educational plaster cast collections of art and architecture of Palermo - in the awareness that the multidisciplinary sharing of knowledge produces an exponential increase in knowledge

The use of steel angles for the connection of laminated glass beams: Experiments and modelling
In the present paper the experimental results relative to three-point bending tests on multilayer glass beams and on semi-rigid connections realised with stainless double web angles are presented and discussed. Small and medium size glass beams were tested and load–deflection curves and crack patterns at failure were recorded. The laminated glass specimens, of equal cross-section, were characterised by three different combinations of annealed float and fully thermally tempered glass plies and different interlayers. Steel joints constituted by double web angles to connect two glass beams were tested adopting several geometrical configurations and using stainless steel bolts preloaded with two different preloading values. The results obtained highlight the brittleness of glass beams with fail safe mechanism in the case of multilayer glasses with PVB. The joints tested were the semi-rigid type, which only make it possible to activate small percentages of the flexural capacity of beams. In all cases examined brittle failure in the glass beams was observed due to stress concentration near the hole, highlighting the importance of the choice of an adequate distance from the hole and the edges of the beams and of the study of an appropriate interface material for connections between glass panels and steel members in the case of both preloaded and non-preloaded bolts
Leggere, scrivere, presentare
The event “Pioggia di Libri” grew out of an idea of Andrea Sciascia, before Coordinator of the Degree course in Architecture and then Chief of the Architecture Department in Palermo. The aim is to promoting educational and research activities carried out by professors of the Architecture Department to the scientific community and not only, in order to activate a virtuous flow of informations and ideas. The main actors are students attending Degree Courses of the Department and Doctoral students. The formula is simple but effective: as in a theatrical piece, the launch of the book takes place with a senior speaker (an UNIPA Professor or an outside expert) who contextualises the problems relating the chosen book and a discussant young (a doctoral student or a research student) who asks questions and issues to the author. This mode allows to involve in the discussion students that, in this way, have the opportunity to attend a multidisciplinary debate on transversal issues apply to their study course
ACTIVE HOUSE PROTOCOL APPLICATION IN MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE An energy-efficient kindergarten in Coppito
The E.U. aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This article aims to fill the gap in the selection of solutions to improve living conditions in territorial assets (SDG n.11) to achieve the expected energy performance (SDG n.7) and disseminate the adoption of new approaches and measures for sustainable design (SDG n.13). These objectives were met through the application of a reverse engineering process to the Ape Tau kindergarten in L'Aquila, Coppito area, after the 2009 earthquake. The building's design solutions were investigated according to quantitative levels suggested by the holistic approach of the Active House protocol, which provides the methodology to verify the building's performance according to comfort, energy and environmental criteria. The results highlight the high performance of the building constructed with multilayer dry technology and the method's effectiveness based on process-oriented analysis to user, environment and territory. The article proposes an innovative paradigm for building requalification replicable in numerous contexts and different climatic condition
RICERCA SCIENTIFICA E SPERIMENTAZIONE DIDATTICA: ATTUALITÀ E PROSPETTIVE
