Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Representations of Space in Hades’ Underworld

This thesis explores the world of Hades (Supergiant 2020) and analyses the inspirations for its environments through a comparison to ancient sources. After establishing Hades’ context and history as an incredibly popular videogame, I examined the various landscapes and their ancient counterparts. I did not, however, attempt to make a topographical map of any of the Underworlds I investigated, as this is impossible with the sheer range of features, themes and ideas that each author has for their vision of the Underworld. There are clear references to Hesiod, Virgil, Homer and Aristophanes in the world building of Hades, and I identified clear changes or inclusions to Supergiant’s Underworld. The exploration of Hades would not be as effective without the use of specific theories in videogame design. I link Hades’ linear structure to the theme of katabasis performed by the main character, which defines him as a reimagined Greek hero. The presence of residents in specific regions immerses the player further as they travel through the Underworld. The inclusion of recognisable beings such as Cerberus and Sisyphus both reassures the player as they move through unknown territory and creates a richer landscape. However, their stories have been altered to suit a contemporary audience, supporting Supergiant’s reinterpretation of Hades for a modern world.</p

El inconsciente y los sueños: correspondencia con el Hades griego

The purpose of this book is to critically discuss the thesis of the American author James Hillman, according to which there is a correspondence between the unconscious, dreams and the Greek Hades. In order to demonstrate this link, Hillman – founder of archetypal psychology – goes back to the origin and archetypal principle of the unconscious and dreams, that is, to the Greek Hades. From a position contrary to that of this author, The unconscious and dreams: correspondence with the Greek Hades, proposes to first go to the social and cultural context in which Hades came to life (to Greek mythological and philosophical thought), and then delve into in Freud's work and establish to what extent the link intended by Hillman is possible. The findings obtained allowed us to identify that it is not so precise to affirm that there is a direct correspondence or link between Freud's conception of the unconscious and the image of the Greek Hades. On the side of dreams, although Freud resumed from the ancients the value that they attributed to him within the human future, he distanced himself in the way in which he understood dreams, their unconscious formation and the technique for their interpretation.

The aim of this article is to show the figure of the ancient god Hades as an important part of Byzantine symbolic representations of the Last Judgement, using the example of the mosaic from the west wall of Basilica Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello, Italy. The article is divided into three main parts. The first part briefly introduces the mosaic complex from Torcello, providing a description of the place, the Basilica, and the mosaic. In the second part, the author focuses on the fragment of the mosaic presenting the figure of Hades in hell. In an effort to show the iconographical and cultural continuity between ancient and early medieval representations, the author compares this figure to its ancient prototype. The last part of the article portrays the development of the motif of the Last Judgment by looking at other chosen representations. In conclusion, the author proposes a possible meaning of the presence of Hades in the mosaic of Torcello

Our analysis of Joachim Wittstock‘s narrative entitled Hades and published thirteen years after the fall of the communist regime in Romania aims at pointing out the intimate connection between socio-political reality and personal experience refl ected by the creative process of turning reality into fi ction by writing. We consider the chosen narrative both as a political and literary statement, refl ecting much of the way of life in Romania during the late 1980s. The narrative may be considered as some kind of withheld fi ction and a pertinent comment of the author as to the role of fi ction in a totalitarian regime

The High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) working at GSI Darmstadt is an unique apparatus aiming for systematical investigations of dilepton and strangeness production in elementary and heavy ion collisions in 1-4 AGeV\textit{AGeV} energy range. Measurements performed with this spectrometer in heavy ion and proton-nucleus collisions aim in investigation of hadron properties in nuclear matter. In wide scope of the HADES physics program the investigations of hadron production in elementary collisions are also foreseen. In the framework of this dissertation the exclusive ϕ\phi meson production in proton-proton reactions at 3.5 GeV\textit{GeV} kinetic energy is presented. The ratio ϕ\phi to ω\omega production cross section has been obtained and discussed in connection to the OZI rule violation phenomena. Description of the analysis methods, which leads to estimation of the ppppϕpp \to pp\phi meson production cross sections is presented. This is followed by a comparison of the extracted φ meson production characteristics with the simulation of this reaction channel. In the simulation an isotropic ϕ\phi angular distribution in the Center of Mass (CM) frame of colliding nucleons and an uniform phase space population in the proton-meson Dalitz distribution are assumed. A good agreement of the measured angular, momentum and proton-ϕ\phi invariant mass distributions with the simulation have been achieved. The extracted exclusive ϕ\phi production cross section at 3.5 GeV\textit{GeV} kinetic energy equals: σϕ4π=1.05[μb]±0.2[μb](stat.)±[μb](syst.)\sigma_{\phi}^{4\pi} = 1.05[\mu b] \pm 0.2[\mu b](stat.) \pm [\mu b](syst.) The exclusive ω\omega production cross section obtained in this experiment allows to calculate the ratio of ϕ\phi to ω\omega production cross section which equals: Rϕ/ω=0.0099±0.0018(stat.)±0.0012(syst.)R_{\phi/\omega} = 0.0099 \pm 0.0018(stat.) \pm 0.0012(syst.) The obtained ratio is close to the one measured in pion-nucleon reaction which exceeds by factor \sim 2-3 OZI rule predictions. In the second part, selected tasks of the HADES data acquisition (DAQ) system upgrade, which were in responsibility of the author of this thesis, are described. They concerned mainly following aspects: • developing, testing and validating of the central trigger system (CTS), • developing, testing and validating of the readout electronics for RPC, START, VETO, Forward Wall and TOF detectors. The newly developed HADES DAQ system, as it is presently used in ongoing Au+Au campaign, with its trigger distribution scheme, front-end boards and readout components are described as well

On the Threshold of Hades: Necromancy and Nékyia in some Passages of Greek Tragedy

    No full text
Con autorización de la revista para autores CSICIn Greek tragedy there are some passages where a katábasis is mentioned or described. Euripides is the author that brings us the highest number of testimonies on the subject: there are two important texts from Alcestis, one which mentions Heracles’ descent to Hades in order to bring the heroine back to life (v. 840ff.), and another where we find references to the katábasis of Orpheus in search of his wife (v. 357ff.). On the other hand there are also a fragment of the satiric play Eurystheus (371 Kannicht) and a passage of Herakles (v. 606ff.) where the hero recalls how he got Cerberus out from Hades. To these texts we can add a striking fragment of Aeschylus’ lost tragedy Psychagogoi (273 Radt). In this article, I study and compare all these texts with the katábasis of the Odyssey and Aristophanes’ Frogs, and I also relate them to rituals of initiation and necromancy, when it is relevant. In this way I hope to shed some light on the resemblances and differences of the typology and the usage of the various katabáseis in Greek tragedy.Peer reviewe

Title: Neutral Meson Production in Ag+Ag Collisions at 1.58 A GeV with HADES Electromagnetic Calorimeter Author: Alexandr Prozorov Abstract: The Dielectron Spectrometer HADES operating at the SIS18 synchro- tron, FAIR/GSI Darmstadt, recently provided new intriguing results on the pro- duction of electron pairs and strangeness from nucleus-nucleus collisions, as well as from elementary reactions, in the energy region of 1 − 2 A GeV. In 2019 the spectrometer was complemented by an electromagnetic calorimeter based on lead- glass modules, which allows us to measure photons and thus study the production of π0 and η mesons via their two-photon decay. Knowledge of the neutral-meson production is a mandatory prerequisite for the interpretation of dielectron data. In particular, the directed and elliptic flow of neutral mesons with respect to transverse momentum and rapidity will be shown for different centrality classes in Ag + Ag collisions at 1.58 A GeV. The results of the analysis corresponding to the 14 × 109 events will be confronted with the results of other experiments and with the current model calculations.
