Clima Ingiusto. Il welfare per un patto eco-sociale

    No full text

Low grade parental gonosomal mosaicism in CHD2 siblings with Smith-Magenis like syndrome

This dataset contains the data for the paper 'Low grade parental gonosomal mosaicism in CHD2 siblings with Smith-Magenis like syndrome Loss-of-function' by Cogliati et al. 2024. Loss-of-function CHD2 (Chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2) mutations are associated with a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders often including early-onset generalized seizures, photosensitivity and epileptic encephalopathies. Patients show psychomotor delay/intellectual disability (ID), autistic features and behavior disorders, such as aggression and impulsivity. Most reported cases are sporadic with description of germline mosaicism only in two families. We detect the first case of parental gonosomal CHD2 mosaicism disclosed in two brothers showing mild ID, born to healthy parents. The eldest brother has a history of drug-controlled generalized tonic-clonic seizures and displays sleep disorder and aggressive behavior suggestive of Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS). Analysis of brothers’ DNAs by NGS custom gene panel for pediatric epilepsy and/or ID disclosed in both the same pathogenic CHD2 variant. Additional NGS experiment on genomic DNA from parents’ peripheral blood and from buccal swab raised the suspicion of low-grade gonosomal mosaicism in the unaffected mother subsequently confirmed by digital-PCR. This report underlines as worthwhile CHD2 screening in individuals presenting ID/developmental delay, with/without epilepsy, and behavior and sleep disorders suggestive of SMS. Detecting a CHD2 variant should prime testing probands’ parents by NGS coupled to digital-PCR on different tissues to exclude/confirm gonosomal mosaicism and define the recurrence risk

This paper provides a detailed study of the historical development of the theory of infinite continuous groups from its dawn in 1883 up to the publication of Jules Drach's thesis in 1898. The aim is twofold. First, to describe the emergence of the notion in Lie's works and to treat the classification problem of all infinite continuous groups. Second, to emphasize the great importance which infinite continuous groups played in the historical development of integration theory of partial differential equations

Variations on a theme : Clifford’s parallelism in elliptic space

In 1873, W. K. Clifford introduced a notion of parallelism in the three-dimensional elliptic space that, quite surprisingly, exhibits almost all properties of Euclidean parallelism in ordinary space. The purpose of this paper is to describe the genesis of this notion in Clifford’s works and to provide a historical analysis of its reception in the investigations of F. Klein, L. Bianchi, G. Fubini, and E. Bortolotti. Special emphasis is placed upon the important role that Clifford’s parallelism played in the development of the theory of connections

On Jacobi's transformation theory of elliptic functions

    No full text
The main interpretative challenge set by the Fundamenta Nova Theoriae Functionum Ellipticarum lies in Jacobi's transformation theory upon which the entire theoretical edifice of the treatise depends. Unfortunately, Jacobi did not convey any indication of how he attained his general formulae for rational transformations of elliptic functions. He limited himself to providing a posteriori verification of the validity of his claims. The aim of this paper is precisely to describe the heuristic path by which in 1827 Jacobi succeeded in finding these transformation formulae. The proposed historical reconstruction will hopefully shed new light upon the emergence in Jacobi's work of the inversion process of elliptic integrals of the first kind and thus of the elliptic function sinamu itself

On the genesis of the Cartan-Kähler theory

The theory of exterior differential systems plays a crucial role in Cartan's whole mathematical production. As he once recognized, all the germs of his subsequent work were contained there. Indeed, it provided him with powerful technical tools that turned out to be very useful in many different fields such as the theory of partial differential equations, the theory of infinite dimensional Lie groups (Lie pseudogroups) and differential geometry. Nevertheless, scarce attention has been paid to this area of historical research thus far. Although authoritative scholars have investigated the foundation of exterior differential calculus in Cartan's early papers, no specific analysis of Cartan's subsequent works laying the foundations of what nowadays is known as the Cartan-Kähler theory has been yet provided. This article represents a first attempt to remedy this unsatisfactory state of affairs by focusing on Cartan's work on Pfaffian systems at the very beginning of the past century. The analysis of Cartan's relevant papers is preceded by a description of the historical context in which such contributions were conceived. In this respect, special emphasis will be put on some works by Engel and von Weber on Pfaffian systems, which laid the basis for the subsequent geometrical developments of Cartan's theory of exterior differential systems

Sulla ricezione del Theorema Egregium, 1828-1868

The article aims to analyze the history of the reception of Theorema Egregium in the time span between the publication of Gauss’s Disquisitiones and about 1870. Some contributions by Liouville, Bertrand, Puiseux, Chelini, Brioschi and Beltrami are carefully analyzed, by showing how the authors proposed to demonstrate this fundamental result of surface theory in a manner that highlighted its geometric content in a more satisfactory way than Gauss’s original treatment. In actual fact, most part of the ideas underlying these reformulations was already contained in the research (private and published only posthu- mously) of Gauss. Curiously, the history of the reception of Theorema Egregium in the period considered was littered with attempts, certainly unaware, to rediscover demonstrations and procedures that Gauss had deemed inadequate and that he had definitively discarded when drafting the text of the Disquisitiones. As will be shown, the reception of Gauss’s ideas produced a fruitful and in-depth debate concerning the methods and techniques that should be considered most suitable to deal with problems in the realm of the theory of surfaces

In this paper we present for the first time a part of the correspondence between Tullio Levi-Civita and Jan Arnoldus Schouten, in the period from May 1918 to April 1919. These letters recount the story of the common and independent discovery of a geometrical interpretation of the covariant derivative. Furthermore, they offer the occasion to reflect upon the quite diverging technical choices adopted by the two mathematicians. The transcription of the letters along with some commentary remarks is preceded by two introductory sections in which the relevant contributions of Levi-Civita and Schouten are dealt with
