Pastoral care of grieving children. Literature often refers to children as the so called forgotten grievers. In the past, during deaths in a family, pastoral counselling was sometimes more focused on the adults than on children. However, losses that are not processed during childhood will have an impact on the rest of such a person’s life. In this article, the importance of children as full members of the community of faith (also regarding their emotions) is emphasised. Aspects such as the question on meaning, the protective and healing effect of spirituality and faith, and the importance of a passage like Luke 18:15–17 with respect to smaller children are discussed. The importance of the integration of spirituality and creative expressive techniques and strategies are also explored. Examples of the latter techniques are discussed, while a number of practical guidelines on religious issues for the guidance of the child who has experienced a loss also receive attention
Pastoral guidance for the self-mutilator. In this article it seemed that the increase in the occurrence of self-mutilation among young people in many cases served as a pressure-relief valve and not a suicide attempt as such. It was very often the outcome of ill-treatment and/or sexual abuse and the person used this method to get rid of the inner pain. Feelings of aloneness, a need to be in control, a need to feel at least something and a need to punish the self could also have played a role. The family climate was generally very important. This provided a special challenge for pastoral counsellors as well as the church by, among others, focussing more on the problem of pain and how to handle it. This was relevant to the fact that denial had played a significant role in certain church circles as well as within some families. As part of the pastoral-therapeutic strategy in helping the self-mutilator, aspects such as identifying the role of lies, the use of solutions from the past, forgiveness, the Lord’s Supper, prayer, and meditation were therefore very important components in the healing process. Pastoral counsellors would have to be well informed about the phenomenon of self-mutilation in order to be able to be of real help
A pastoral exploration of the effect of 'father wounds', 'father hunger', and 'father need' In this article firstly a couple of historical markers will be indicated with reference to the concepts of 'father wounds', 'father hunger' and 'father need'. The void referring to research on the terrain of this theme will then be raised, as well as the onslaught on the role of the father in general. Five contributing factors to 'father wounds', 'father hunger' and 'father need' will be consecutively discussed, namely: family structures that are busy changing; changing career structures; parents who are forced to fulfil different roles and levels of involvement; the shift between traditional and contemporary gender roles; adult pleasure, the digital era, and the role of peer groups. The second part of the article focuses on a number of practical guidelines to restore the father relationship again. Aspects that, for example, prominently figure here, are the following: identifying the problem; identifying the symptoms; collecting all the facts; identifying family secrets and family myths; verbalising that which had not been said before; re-formulating the past; processing the losses; to guard against impulsive overreactions; the importance of forgiveness; the invitation to others to share your journey; exploring new roles; the allocation of new meaning to the past; the experience of raising a son yourself; the discovery that there is only one Perfect Father, and by daily maintaining an intimate relationship with Him, can lead to the healing of wounds and the recovery of relationships.
A proposed matrix regarding the pastoral counselling of the wounded faith-estranged. This article focuses on the role of the pastoral counselling of the emotionally wounded and faith-estranged person through the mediation of the salvation in Christ. The role of the Triune God and the central position of Scripture in mediating the salvation in Christ are also examined and the Scriptural view of man is constructed. The role of emotional trauma in the estrangement from God as well as the importance of justice and retribution are examined as it relates to the spiritual and emotional healing of the wounded faith-estranged. The article also discusses the prominence of the salvation in Christ in the spiritual healing process. In conclusion, a pastoral-therapeutic matrix of intervention is proposed to help in addressing the present life crisis and current faith-estrangement within the context of the trauma history, with a view to find healing from the woundedness and the faith-estrangement through salvation in Christ. Practical guidelines are offered to guide this supporting process
Belangrike meta-teoretiese riglyne betreffende die emosioneel verwonde persoon
Important meta-theoretical guidelines regarding the emotionally wounded person. This article examines the relationship between emotional woundedness and faith estrangement. Trust issues towards God often emerge in the heart of the believer when left vulnerable and in shock due to unforeseen trauma. The dilemma is that this condition leaves the wounded person more vulnerable. With a view to bringing healing and deeper faith, different trauma intervention models are evaluated and the role of forgiveness, retribution and faith are examined. In conclusion, some guidelines regarding a holistic approach in the pastoral counselling of the traumatised faith-estranged person are presented
A practical-theological perspective on corruption: towards a solution-based approach in practice
This article aims to delineate the basis-theoretical and meta-theoretical perspectives on the phenomenon of corruption. It defines solution-based pastoral markers should the research indeed establish a definitive role for pastoral theology in addressing this serious societal ill. Thus it attempts to scrutinize the dynamic factors associated with the phenomenon of corruption in general and as it pertains to South Africa. It also examines the views of both Scripture and related disciplines on corruption, then compare some of the current solutions proposed in the literature on dealing with it. Furthermore, it determines and practically delineate the role and parameters of practical theology in an attempt to address the issue of corruption. Finally, one of the following hypotheses is accepted: Firstly, Practical Theology has a distinct role to conduct in rooting out corruption within society. Secondly, Practical Theology has no defined role in assisting with the eradication of corruption within society.http://reference.sabinet.co.za/document/EJC138329http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/actat.v33i1.
Thesis (M.A.)-University of Durban-Westville, 1994.The main objective of this study is to examine the process of healing and recovery by people who have suffered a crisis. Healing concerns not only the physical aspects of a person but also the spiritual. In this regard there is a very close interaction between body and spirit. In the past the individual was to a large extent fragmented; much more emphasis must now be placed on a holistic approach towards illness, excluding however any mystical or occultic attachments. The various terms used in the Bible for healing and salvation make a very important contribution to defining healing; terms such as sozo and therapeuo are important in this regard. The person suffering a crisis has a great need for basic trust in the faithfulness of God. In this regard the following supporting terminology within Scripture presents important insights sterizo, rizomai, bebaioomai, oikodomeo, sthenoo endunamoomai, dunamoo, ischuo, stereoo. For many people in crisis situations, alternative medicine has begun to offer an escape because traditional approaches have not provided for their needs. Aspects with regard to this area has been addressed as well. To a large extent healing takes place when the pastor succeeds in helping a person who has suffered a crisis to function on a higher level than was the case before the crisis. Should the person function on a lower level after the crisis, the implication could be that healing has not occurred. Very often there is also a close relationship between trauma and certain physical symptoms and a number of examples of such cases are presented and discussed. The immune system of the body is affected negatively by stress and trauma. On the other hand, healing is promoted by positive and pleasant circumstances, with the emphasis on the striving towards a specific goal in life. Each crisis could in some way present an opportunity for personal growth. However, it could also be a situation with possible negative consequences; eventually the outcome will depend on a specific decision of the person in crisis. Within the normal long-term relationship between the pastor and the members of his congregation, it should be easy for him, in crisis intervention, to alternate between an insight oriented approach on the one hand and a supportive approach on the other. In cases where it is quite obvious that unresolved past trauma is repeatedly the cause of crisis situations, the pastor's involvement could assist in addressing this problem. 250 case studies of persons who experienced some kind of crisis have been evaluated; from these, fifteen have been selected for discussion in this study. The results indicated the importance of taking into consideration the unique history of each individual - especially with reference to past traumatic experience and crisis. Where the emphasis is put on a responsible self-disclosure when individuals relate their experiences, the indispensable therapeutic value of conversation becomes evident. The decisive importance of prayer in this regard was also pointed out very clearly. Another very important aspect seemed to be the very close relationship between certain traumatic experiences and contact with the occult. The pastor will have to obtain the necessary insight and background to this field in order to be able to assist and guide specific affected individuals effectively
Abstract
Illuminating perspectives for the pastorate from trauma research on traumatized children.
This article focuses on the profound long-term implications of unresolved trauma during childhood. These implications can be physical, emotional or spiritual in nature. The important role of recurring traumatic memories is discussed as well as a number of further typical behavioural patterns as well as acting out behaviours. Exposure to the unresolved trauma using various exposure techniques during the counselling process is also discussed. Important aspects regarding a number of therapeutic strategies are then discussed, while also reflecting on possible pastoral implications. In this regard, for example, the focus is on the use of a journal, predictable routines and rituals, child-centred play, the child\u27s identity in Christ, the importance of listening to the child, setting a timeline and the therapeutic value of drawing tasks.
From the results of research in the field of trauma, it eventually appears that there are a variety of useful components and perspectives that can be effectively incorporated by pastoral counsellors and pastoral play therapists into the pastoral counselling and guidance of traumatized children.

Pastoral implications of the mind/body connection
Against the background of the body / mind connection the focus is firstly on the Biblical view of man as an unfragmented unity. Secondly the emphasis is on the historical roots of the so called biopsychosocial model that is replacing the traditional biophysical method. Furthermore, the focus is also placed on the possibility of physical problems as the result of unresolved emotions; the immune system as an important link within the body / mind connection; critical life changes; the role of genetics as well as important decisions of the will; social support and loneliness; and, the therapeutical value of writing or verbalization. In conclusion the emphasis is put on the pastoral implications of all the above mentioned factors and a plea is made for the inclusion of the pastoral / spiritual dimension in the biospychosocial model. This will lead to a fully multidisciplinary approach in the counseling of the traumatized and / or emotionally wounded person.http://explore.up.ac.za/record=b152516
Onverwerkte emosionele pyn by bejaardes : 'n Pastorale studie
PhD (Pastorale Studies), North-West University, Potchefstroom CampusThe theme of this study is: Unprocessed emotional pain in the life of the elderly: ʼn Pastoral study. The overarching objective of this study is to formulate a strategic theoretical model for the pastoral guidance of the elderly person with unprocessed emotional pain to a better quality of life on the emotional, physical and spiritual levels.
The study is based on the pastoral-theological model of Richard Osmer. The following four tasks are suggested by Osmer: the interpretive task, descriptive task, normative task and the pragmatic task.
The interpretive task: This task is dealt with by means of a literature study in Chapter 2. The emphasis of this task is on supplementary insights from related sciences regarding the theme of this study. From sociology, reference was made to the human aging process within a social context, in which emotional injury can occur. Within psychology, a lot of research has already been done which has shown, among other things, that where trauma and pain were not dealt with during childhood, it implies far-reaching emotional consequences for the victims. Negative habits and behaviours that are established early on also seem to be difficult to outgrow and unlearn and as a result, elderly people very often still struggle with such consequences of unprocessed emotional pain from their childhood. From the field of medical science, especially the field of neuroanatomy, informative perspectives have also been identified regarding unprocessed trauma and emotional pain.
The descriptive task: The descriptive task: This task is discussed in Chapter 3 with the help of a literature study from pastoral theological literature. A particularly important contribution in this chapter centred on compiling an emotional timeline, representing the life span of the elderly. The concept of inner healing has proved to be an important key in interpreting this. From pastoral theological literature, further contributing factors to emotional injury, its consequences as well as preliminary therapeutic markers with a view to a pastoral model have been identified.
The normative task was dealt with in Chapter 4. Here the emphasis was on appropriate Scripture. Exegesis according to the grammatical-historical method was done from the following passages of Scripture: Isaiah 61: 1-3 and Luke 4: 16-19. From the mentioned passages of Scripture, various useful guidelines regarding unprocessed emotional pain have been identified. An important exegetical message to every emotionally wounded person is that through the grace, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, healing and freedom is possible for every human being. Through this message, the overarching objective of this study can be met, namely, the formulation of a strategic theoretical model for the pastoral guidance of the elderly person with unprocessed emotional pain to a better quality of life on the emotional, physical and spiritual levels.
The pragmatic task was dealt with in Chapter 5. Using the results from the previous chapters, a strategic-theoretical model has been compiled in Chapter 5 for dealing with unprocessed emotional pain in the life of the elderly. The therapeutic markers in Chapter 2, from adjacent sciences, the therapeutic markers in Chapter 3, from pastoral theological literature as well as the in-depth aspects from Chapter 4, the exegesis of applicable Scripture, are integrated in Chapter 5.
Several questionnaires are attached as appendix. These questionnaires can serve as a tool, for the identification of unprocessed emotional pain, during the guidance of the elderly, thus facilitating the process of healing.
The role of prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit proved to be of particular importance in guiding the elderly. Through prayer, the counsellor brings the elderly to Jesus Christ for healing from emotional injury.Doctora
