Career Wellbeing from a Whole-Life Perspective: Implications from Work-Nonwork Spillover and Crossover Research.
Career Self-Management as a Key Factor for Career Wellbeing
Career self-management (CSM) is an important factor for achieving career wellbeing and is becoming increasingly crucial in career environments characterized by higher volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of current research on CSM, and conceptually and empirically clarify its relation to career wellbeing. First, we define CSM and delineate its dimensionality. Second, we concisely summarize the empirical research on predictors and career wellbeing related outcomes of CSM. Third, based on our literature review, we suggest how CSM can be promoted through interventions, and how organizations can create synergies between organizational and individual career management. Finally, we suggest avenues for further research addressing identified research gaps: conceptual refinement, investigating facilitators of CSM at different action stages, broadening the scope of investigated career wellbeing outcomes of CSM, conducting theory-based intervention studies to systematically promote CSM, and examining contextual influences emerging in Industry 4.0 work-life spaces
The moderating role of graduate skills and attributes in relation to the employability and retention of graduates in a retail organisation
The general aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the graduateness, employability and satisfaction with retention factors of individuals and whether graduateness moderates the relationship between employability and satisfaction. The study used a quantitative, cross-sectional research design on a purposive, non-probability sample (N = 100) of predominant black (93%), male (49%) and female (51%) trainees between the ages of 17-29 years (early career). Presenting/applying information skills significantly and negatively predicted compensation while ethical/responsible behaviour significantly and positively predicted satisfaction with job characteristics and organisational commitment. Graduateness related positively to self-perceived general employability. General employability did not significantly predict the participants’ satisfaction with retention factors. Graduate skills and attributes did not significantly moderate the relationship between self-perceived employability and satisfaction with retention factors. Males had significantly stronger perceptions of employability compared to females while females had higher levels of work–life balance satisfaction compared to males. Overall, the results suggest that general self-perceived employability is more a function of graduateness than of retention, while graduateness positively relates to retention factors.M. Com. Sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout in a higher education institution call centre
The objective of this study was to: (1) assess the overall wellness climate profile of a sample of higher education call centre employees for national benchmarking purposes; (2) explore the relationship between the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout; and (3) determine how the participants differ regarding these variables in terms of socio-demographic contextual factors such as gender, race, age, and marital status. The South African Employee Health and Wellness Survey was used as a measuring instrument. Compared to the national norm, the results indicated a risky wellness climate reflecting a burnout propensity, lower morale (affective wellbeing) and lower resilience (sense of coherence).
Significant relations existed between the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout levels. Significant differences regarding these variables were also detected between males and females and the various marital status groups regarding the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout. The findings of this study contributed new knowledge that may be used to inform employee wellness programmes within a higher education call centre environment. Assessing the psychometric properties of the adult learner self-directedness scale
This research project examined the psychometric properties of the adult learner self-directedness scale (ALSDS). The study assessed the construct validity and reliability of the scale as a measure of adult learner self-directedness for diverse groups of adult learners in the South African open, distance and e-learning higher education (ODeLHE) context. The study also assessed whether the factorial structure of the ALSDS was equivalent for adult learners across gender, race and age groups. Furthermore, the study assessed whether the various socio-demographic groups differed significantly on the sub-scale dimensions of the ALSDS; and explored whether a range of socio-biographical factors predicted adult learner self-directedness.
This doctoral study has extended the student’s initial exploratory master’s study on the development and factorial structure of the ALSDS that involved a stratified random sample (N = 1 102) of ODeLHE adult learners. The secondary data set involved a random subsample of n = 747 of the original master’s sample data set. Exploratory structural equation modelling (ESEM), exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed a three-factor solution for the ALSDS, with 15 items loading onto the three factors. The results provided evidence of the construct (convergent and discriminant) validity and internal consistency reliability of the three-factor ALSDS, including the construct equivalence of the scale’s factorial structure across the gender, race and age groups. Significant differences between age, race and gender groups were observed regarding the scale sub-dimensions. The study advances theory on adult learner self-directedness in ODeLHE contexts and contributed evidence of the validity and reliability of a shortened version of the ALSDS as a useful measure of adult learner self-directedness. Practically, the study highlighted assessing adult learners’ success orientation in ODeLHE, active academic activity and strategic utilisation of resources as aspects of enhancing their self-directedness. Die studie het ook geassesseer of die fakulteitstruktuur van die ALSDS gelykstaande was vir volwasse leerders oor geslags-, rasse- en ouderdomsgroepe heen. Verder het die studie geassesseer of die verskeie sosiodemografiese groepe beduidend verskil het op die subskaal-dimensies van die ALSDS en ondersoek of 'n reeks sosiobiografiese faktore selfgerigtheid by volwasse leerders voorspel het.

The role of positive psychology construct in employee coping
The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine the relationship between locus of control (measured by the Locus of Control Inventory), work engagement (measured by the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale) and sense of coherence (measured by the Orientation to Life Questionnaire); (2) determine whether coping and non-coping individuals (measured by a coping scale) differ significantly regarding these variables, and (3) the strategies they employ to deal with change in their lives (determined by means of structured interviews).
A survey design, and correlational and inferential statistical procedures were used to achieve the quantitative research objectives. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse and interpret the research data obtained from the open-ended questions on coping strategies. A convenience sample (n = 69) of individuals employed in the manufacturing sector participated in the study. The quantitative results revealed a significant relationship between the three variables and that copers and non-copers differ significantly regarding their coping. The qualitative data analysis indicated that copers and non-copers differ in terms of the coping strategies they employ to deal with change.

Shaking Up the Status Quo? An Analysis of Developments in the Social Context of Work Stemming from Industry 4.0
During the past years, academics have revised their earlier decision to omit the social dimensions of work from work design theory, realising that interpersonal interactions in the work setting are becoming more pervasive. Industry 4.0 , however, raises new question marks with respect to this pervasiveness. Terms such as big data, Internet of Things and augmented reality have the potential to lead to shifts in the status quo of the social context of work and implicit issue of thriving. This chapter therefore aims to analyse what developments can be observed with respect to the social context of work as a result of Industry 4.0 . Findings from thirteen interviews conducted in four different organisations at two levels suggest that social interactions will not give into digital options. Job embeddedness, work engagement and turnover intention of staff in a higher education institution
The objective of this study was: (1) to determine the relationship between job embeddedness
(measured by the Job Embeddedness Scale), work engagement (measured by the Utrecht Work
Engagement Scale), and turnover intention (measured by the Turnover Intention Scale); and (2) to
determine whether employees from different groups, namely age, race, gender, marital status and
tenure differ significantly in their levels of job embeddedness, work engagement and turnover
intention. A quantitative survey was conducted on a non-probability purposive sample (N = 153) of
staff in a higher education institution.
Correlational analyses revealed significant relationships between job embeddedness, work
engagement and turnover intention. Multiple regression analyses showed that organisation links
and dedication negatively predicted the participants’ turnover intention. Significant differences
between age, race, gender, marital status and tenure were also found. The findings contribute
valuable knowledge to the field of Career Psychology and can be applied in the retention of
employees in the higher education institution. The study concludes with recommendations for

Development of the positive coping behavioural inventory : a positive psychological approach
The general aim of this research was to determine the theoretical elements of positive coping
behaviour and operationalise these into a reliable and valid measurement scale, the Positive
Coping Behaviour Inventory (PCBI). Positive coping behaviour was conceptualised in the
context of employee wellness in the contemporary world of work. The literature review guided
the development of a theoretical model comprising four constructs denoting positive coping
behaviour: cognitive, affective, conative and social coping behaviour. Scale development
protocols were followed in generating items for each dimension.
The empirical study (research scale development) employed a non-probability, purposive
sampling technique. The empirical study targeted the total population of N = 525 employees
working in Omnia. The Omnia Group comprises a balanced and diversified range of
complementary chemical service businesses with a broad geographic spread. The sample
was diverse in terms of age, gender and race, overall mood description and general health.
The respondents were purposefully selected based on the requirement that respondents had
to be working and aged between 19 and 65 years.
The empirical research provided evidence of the factorial (multidimensional) validity,
unidimensionality, internal consistency reliability and structural and intra-test construct
validity of the PCBI. Construct equivalence of the PCBI across age, gender and race groups
was also confirmed. The statistical analyses provided evidence of the PCBI being anchored
in a strong theoretical foundation with the scale having the potential to provide researchers
and practitioners with a reliable instrument to measure the positive coping behaviour of adult workers. Furthermore, the PCBI contributes to the field of positive psychology and industrial
and organisational psychology in terms of better understanding of the behavioural
dimensions that constitute positive coping behaviour. As a valid theoretical framework, the
PCBI dimensions provide useful information on measuring individuals’ positive coping

Archetypal life themes, career orientations, and employability satisfaction of higher education students: a postmodern career counselling perspective
The objective of the study was to explore the constructs archetypal life themes (measured by the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator), and career orientations (measured by the Career Orientations Inventory) from a postmodern career counselling perspective in facilitating students’ employability satisfaction (measured by a single item scale). A random sample of 270 predominantly black and female distance learning undergraduate students (mean age = 32) employed in the service industry participated in the survey. Correlational statistics revealed statistically significant relationships between the participants’ current active archetypal life themes, their dominant career orientations and employability satisfaction. The value of the findings lies in the explanatory utility of the identified empirical relationships between the three variables in postmodern constructivist and narrative career counselling approaches interested in combining facets of quantitative with qualitative assessments.
