Formal Techniques and Self/Other Relations in the Novels of Dirk Bogarde
The thesis foregrounds the distinctive contribution Dirk Bogarde made to
contemporary writing in a second career that developed in parallel to his screen
commitments. It dispels the notion that Bogarde followed a familiar path as an actor
who wrote books. Instead it establishes his reputation as an innovative writer whose
formal technique was substantially influenced by the textual systems of cinema and
the cross-fertilisation from acting to writing.
In examining the formative factors that steered Bogarde towards authorship, the
thesis addresses the role of performance as a generative factor in the evolution of the
novels, establishing a discursive link with Bakhtinian dialogism, and specifically,
transgredience as a formal imperative. Secondly, it affords a critical insight into why
the major concerns with staging and performativity preoccupy his writing career.
The thesis claims that Bogarde was an empirically dialogical writer whose use
of camera-eye narration fostered the proliferation of competing discourses across the
fiction. This formal dynamic is centred on the relationship between stages and
dialogism, which incorporates the work of Erving Goffinan as a complementary
critique to Bakhtinian theory with its emphasis on self-presentation. The concern
with socially-constructed behaviour leads the thesis to address the associated issues of
stereotyping and 'otherness', which in terms of body politics is articulated by the
mono logic drive to confine the sexual 'other' to a fixed representation.
Bogarde's ability to draw on cinematic and performance techniques identifies
an area of expertise unavailable to most other writers. This is an unusual repository
of skills to bring to writing which is why the thesis makes the claim for his singular
achievement as a contemporary author. There are fruitful points of intersection to be
explored in this respect with the work of Christopher Isherwood, whom Bogarde read
and admired, as a basis for further research. It is hoped that the thesis will play its
part in opening up new possibilities for Bogarde's writing to be re-visited by future
critics
"The end of national models? Integration courses and citizenship trajectories in Europe"
Several European countries have recently introduced or are planning to introduce citizenship trajectories (voluntary or obligatory inclusion programs for recent immigrants) or citizen integration tests (tests one should pass to be able and acquire permanent residence or state citizenship). Authors like Joppke claim this is an articulation of a more general shift towards the logic of assimilation (and away from a multicultural agenda) in integration policy paradigms of European States. Integration policies would even be converging in such a fashion that it would no longer make sense to think in terms of national models for immigrant integration. One cannot deny the empirical fact of diffusion of civic integration policies throughout Europe. This paper claims there is, however, still sufficient distinctiveness between immigrant integration policies in order to continue and use an analytical framework which distinguishes national models
Influence of the practice environment on community service nurses’ subjective well-being, compassion practice and psychological capital
Background
The practice environment as experienced by community service nurses (CSNs) has not been explored in the South African context, and few studies have explored the influence of the practice environment on intrapersonal resources such as subjective well-being, compassion practice and psychological capital.
Aim
To describe the influence of the practice environment on CSNs’ subjective well-being, compassion practice and psychological capital, and the association between these variables and selected personal and situational demographic factors.
Methods
A cross-sectional design was employed with self-report questionnaires used to collect data from an all-inclusive sample of CSNs that studied in North West Province and began their community service year there in 2016 (N = 284; n = 60).
Results
CSNs perceive the practice environment as favourable (M = 2.60; SD = 0.65). CSNs are satisfied with life (M = 24.89; SD = 5.68), have high levels of positive affect (M = 39.13; SD = 7.97), compassion satisfaction (M = 5.44; SD = 0.71) and psychological capital (M = 5.67; SD = 0.95). Nurse foundations of quality of care and nurse participation in hospital affairs had the most influence on intrapersonal resources. The positive components of subjective well-being, compassion satisfaction and psychological capital were highly correlated. Situational demographic factors were associated with intrapersonal resources and perceptions of the practice environment.
Conclusion
Healthcare facilities should provide a positive practice environment for CSNs, that includes an orientation programme with formal organisational and supervision structures, in order to strengthen CSNs’ intrapersonal resources, improve their perceptions of the practice environment, and ultimately improve nurse and patient outcome
Embedded subjectivity in the work of J.M. Coetzee
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is the result of an immersion in the work of J.M. Coetzee. I have taken
various of Coetzee’s novels, namely Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons, Disgrace, The
Master of Petersburg, Foe, Life & Times of Michael K and Slow Man, and constructed
readings of these novels from the inside out. The overarching concern of the
dissertation is the notion of subjectivity and Coetzee’s methods of representing
subjectivity. It is my contestation that the experience of authentic subjective
awareness arises from the process of reading itself. It is not a state of being that is
described by the text, but rather a layered constellation of substitutive exchanges that
emerges from the process of textual relation. The notion of embeddedness serves as a
description of the way in which the text materializes this experience of subjectivity.
The structure of exploration in each chapter has taken as its paradigm a conceptual
concern arising from the text itself. In the first chapter (Elizabeth Costello) the
concern is with structure itself. The character of Elizabeth struggles against the
limitation inherent in the process of representation; this struggle is read as an
indication of authentic subjective experience in the face of reduction to a system of
codes. The second chapter (Disgrace) attempts to formulate the dynamic of
subjective awareness in romantic terms. I construct a reading of Lurie’s predicament
in terms that arise from his conceptual environment, in order to indicate the primacy
of textual materiality as the locus of subjective awareness. The notion of the classic
informs the third chapter (The Master of Petersburg). I use an essay by Coetzee to
delineate a conception of the classic, which is then applied as a theoretical framework
for an exploration of Dostoevsky’s pursuit of his stepson. The fourth and last chapter
(Foe, Life & Times of Michael K and Slow Man) focuses on Coetzee’s use of the body
as a figure for embedded subjectivity. It emerges that the body as a trope of
embeddedness forms an important aspect of Coetzee’s work throughout his career.
As such it is a very suitable figure for describing the dynamics of embeddedness as a
mode of representation that aligns itself with the textual materiality of subjective
being.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis het ontstaan as die gevolg van ‘n noukeurige ondersoek na die werk van
J.M. Coetzee.
boeke, naamlik Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons, Disgrace, The Master of
konkretiseer.
derde hoofstuk (The Master of Petersburg).
vierde en laaste hoofstuk (Foe, Life & Times of Michael K en Slow Man) fokus op
Master
A survey of wound care knowledge in South Africa
CITATION: Coetzee, F. Coetzee, J. & Hagemeister, D. 2010. A survey of wound care knowledge in South Africa. African Journal of Health Professions Education, 2(2):9-13, doi:10.7196/ajhpe.64.The original publication is available at http://www.ajhpe.org.za/index.php/ajhpe/article/view/64/28Chronic wounds afflict millions worldwide, incurring significant
health care costs and chronic suffering. Clinicians are often unsure
about treatment, resulting in poor outcomes.
Objective. To determine the scope of knowledge possessed by fifthyear
medical students, general practitioners (GPs) and surgical registrars,
concerning chronic wound management.
Design. Cross-sectional study.
Methods. Deans of eight South African medical schools received letters
requesting information regarding time devoted to wound-care
training. Knowledge-based questionnaires were distributed to finalyear
students at two universities, surgical registrars at four universities
and GPs attending refresher courses.
Results. Four medical schools replied, of whom only two offered
formal teaching. 162 medical students, 45 GPs and 47 surgical registrars
completed questionnaires. The overall median (25th - 75th
percentiles) knowledge scores for registrars, GPs and students were
65% (55 - 70%), 55% (45 - 65%) and 45% (35 - 50%) respectively.
Whereas the scores of registrars and GPs did not differ, the student
scores were significantly less. Only 32% of registrars and 18% of
GPs attained scores of 70% or more. 96% considered training to be
inadequate. Interest in wound care was only mild to moderate, with
more GPs than registrars requesting literature.
Conclusions. Very little, if any, training on chronic wounds is offered
in South Africa. The levels of knowledge cannot be considered adequate
for successful treatment, nor for teaching to undergraduates.
This preliminary study cannot reflect the attitudes and knowledge
throughout the country. However, it is clear that there is a need for
improved education about these conditions that have huge clinical
and economic consequences.Publishers' versio
J.M. Coetzee: Construction and Representation of Historical Reality (Effect)
South African novelist J.M. Coetzee has often been accused of refusing to engage with socio-political conflicts that mark his society. This paper will frame and analyse representation and conceptualization of history in Coetzee’s post-apartheid novels—Disgrace (2000) and Elizabeth Costello (2003). The central argument will be that, far from ignoring historical struggles and developments, Coetzee’s work engages with and encodes the same by using the grammar of novelistic discourse, which it positions as a rival to normative modern historical discourse
