The undergrounding of HV subtransmission networks in urban/suburban areas is bound to increase fault currents, especially for ground faults if system neutral is solidly grounded. A parametric fault analysis based on symmetrical components is applied to a sample HV system with three lines and two EHV points of supply, based on a simple meshed Italian subtransmission network. Results are then validated by detailed three-phase ATP-EMTP simulations. Values yielded by the parametric study confirm the expected increase of all fault levels, reaching up to 36% and 69% for three-phase and 1-phase-to-ground faults, and even 104% for the ground current of phase-to-phase-to-ground faults. All calculated values are however tolerable, with fault currents well within the operating envelope of devices and components; cross-bonded sheaths also significantly relieve substation grounding mats. Some consequences of undergrounding such as reduction of earth-fault factor may be actually beneficial

fault location in Power Network based on Electromagnetic Time Reversal

    No full text
The research investigates a new method based on electromagnetic time-reversal (EMTR) theory for locating faults in power networks. This method was developed first in the field of acoustics and was more recently applied to electromagnetics. The basic idea of the EMTR is to take advantage of the reversibility in time of the wave equation. The transients observed in specific observation points of the system are time-reversed and transmitted back into the system. The time-reversed signals are shown to converge to the source (fault) location.21 Settembre 201

Consequences of the common origin of the knee and ankle in Cosmic Ray Physics

    No full text
The differential energy spectrum of the cosmic radiation from solar modulation energies up to 5 × 1019 eV is correctly predicted by a recent theory of the knee and ankle which uses only one normalization point. This remarkable quantitative result, spanning over many decades in energy and intensity, along with the existence of the second knee at 6 × 1017 eV, is obtained assuming constant spectral indices of individual ions at the cosmicray sources and no other critical hypotheses. In this study the chemical composition of the cosmic radiation is evaluated as a direct consequence of the theory. The computed mean logarithmic mass exhibits a rising trend from 1.8 to 3.0 in the range 1015-1017 eV, a maximum value of 3.2 at 3×1017 eV, and a characteristic lightening above 3 × 1017 eV up to 4 × 1018 eV. All of these distinctive features are in accord with the data of many experiments. Two additional consequences intrinsic to the theory are qualitatively discussed: (1) some limitative bounds on the mechanism accelerating cosmic rays; (2) the degree of isotropy implied by the residence time of the cosmic rays in the Galaxy

    Ritratto di Fausto Codino (1927-1985)

Little is known about Fausto Codino (1927-1985), who was an hellenist, a classical scholar, a translator, an expert of Marx and Engels’ works, and an editorial consultant (he worked for Editori Riuniti, Laterza, Einaudi, Il Saggiatore, Feltrinelli, Garzanti, Mondadori, Bompiani, Edizioni dell’Elefante). Personal recollections and hitherto unknown letters and documents allow to retrace some moments of Codino’s life and work on the occasion of his 30th death anniversary

    The origin of the ankle

    No full text
The differential intensity of cosmic radiation shows a sequence of depressions referred to as "knees" in a large energy band above 10^15 eV. The global depression entailed in the complete spectrum with respect to the extrapolated intensity based on low energy data amounts to a maximum factor of 8, occurring at 5 x 10^18 eV, where flux measurements exhibit a relative minimum, referred to as the "ankle". It is demonstrated by a full simulation of cosmic ray trajectories in the Galaxy that the intensity minimum around the ankle energy is primarily due to the nuclear interactions of the cosmic ions with the interstellar matter and to the galactic magnetic field. "Ankles" signal the onset energies of the rectilinear propagation in the Milky Way at the Earth, being for example, 4 x 10^18 eV for helium and 6 x 10^19 eV for iron. The ankle, in spite of its notable importance at the Earth, is a local perturbation of the universal spectrum which, between the knee and the ankle, decreases by a round factor 10^9, regaining its unperturbed status above 10^19 eV

Optimal power flow application to EHVAC interconnections for GW-sized Offshore Wind Farms

Operation of long EHVAC cable interconnectors requires controlling voltage/reactive power profiles. With reference to a hypothetical 200 km long 400 kV-50 Hz cable system, connecting to the grid three large OWFs with 2 GW total capacity, the paper compares results yielded by a dedicated algorithm with those of a standard OPF software. A parametric study of the interconnector was carried out, considering different dispatch scenarios and boundary conditions (network connection point voltages). Several cases were ran for an enlarged, meshed test system including the interconnector. Results show that solutions yielded by OPF and by the authors' algorithm are very close, confirming the effectiveness of the latter but also its possible replacement by a standard OPF when dealing with non-radial cable system topologies
