    No full text

Repair strategies in the context of spinal cord injury cover a broad amount of fields. Different approaches have been considered ranging from the chemical, mechanical, pharmacological, material sciences, electrical and chemical engineering sphere. There is much interest in combinational therapies since many approaches yield promising results yet none is beneficial enough in functional terms. There is also a necessity of properly evaluate the improvement these therapies pose from a functional point of view and do it with sufficient resolution to target and invest in strategies with higher potential. This thesis is born with the interest of contributing to the spinal cord injury field at those two levels. On one side, I have developed an injury model and techniques to test the efficacy of a therapy for spinal cord repair as compared to controls. On the other, I have proposed a combinational therapy in the form of a scaffold that combines biomaterials and electrical fields to stimulate regeneration In the first part of this thesis, I have developed an animal model to test effectiveness of treatment by analyzing the electromyography signal of the intercostal muscles. The respiratory system is a good test bench, usually neglected in regeneration studies. I have used a mix of engineering approaches from signal processing to animal physiology analysis to provide the test with enough resolution to identify improvement. Then, I have proved the efficacy of the model by using a stem cell therapy. In the second part of the thesis, I have tested piezoelectric polymers as a useful platform to deliver electrical fields to neurons. I have shown the resulting increase in neuronal growth upon exposure to alternating electrical fields, in concrete, in neuronal branching. These results encourage the use of biocompatible piezoelectric polymers which are very versatile in nature, as a source for combinational therapies. Future studies will translate this in vitro model into an in vivo treatment which will be assessed with the strategy explained in the first part.Ph. No full text
In the novel El alfabeto de los pájaros by Nuria Barrios, the author creates a child’s fantasy world using literary language and symbolism to show the psychological adjustment of an adopted child named Nix to her family environment. In order to talk about her adoption, Nix and her mother invent stories that they tell each other, using a repetitive, musical and symbolic language. By using these techniques, Barrios creates an atmosphere of self-discovery for the girl and her mother where they are able to tell the story of Nix’s origin in a new way so that Nix can adapt emotionally to her position as adopted daughter. This article analyzes how the author presents the psychological process of adoption through the use of literary language.

The dicyclopropylzirconocene complex [Cp2Zr(c-C3H5)(2)](1) eliminates cyclopropane to generate the (2)-cyclopropene/bicyclobutane intermediate [Cp2Zr((2)-c-C3H4)](A). A does not activate any pyridine C-H bonds, but rather pyridine inserts into a Zr-C bond of A, yielding an azazirconacycle with a dearomatized pyridyl group [Cp2Zr\(2)-N,C-8-(2-c-C3H4)-C5H5N\](2). Kinetic data, isotopelabelling experiments, and DFT calculations indicate that the rate-determining step of this stereospecific reaction is cyclopropane elimination, and that the stability of the intermediate [Cp2Zr((2)-c-C3H4)(NC5H5)](A-py) governs the selectivity of the reaction. Complex2 tautomerizes to [Cp2Zr\(2)-N,C-8-(2-C3H5)-C5H4N\](6) through a base-catalyzed proton migration accompanied by cyclopropyl opening and restoration of conjugation within the zirconacycle

Is student procrastination related to controlling teacher behaviours?

    No full text
[EN] Even motivated students procrastinate, for procrastination is triggered by a volitional (rather than by a motivational) problem. However, many factors, such as learning context, teacher interpersonal style, and also type of motivation may influence the occurrence of procrastination. The aim of the present study was to assess the relations between first-year university students’ procrastination and controlling teacher behaviour. Four types of controlling teacher behaviour and three distinct measures of procrastination were ecvaluated and their correlations assessed. Findings revealed small but significant associations between (a) conditional use of rewards and decisional procrastination, and between (b) excessive personal control and procrastination linked to avoiding tasks. Results suggest that controlling teacher behaviours might influence students’ psychological experiences in learning negatively. Teachers who do not refrain from constant use of conditional rewards may deffer students’ decision processes regarding their own autonomous academic learning, and excessive personal control may favour students’ perceptions of external regulations, decreasing intrinsic motivation and autonomous self-regulated learning and, thus, making it more likely to engage in alternative activities, procrastinating academic learning.Valenzuela, R.; Codina, N.; Pestana, J.; González-Conde, J. [EN] This paper presents a teaching experience in social psychology learning, aimed at students’ acquisition of critical analysis and digital literacy competences at the University of Barcelona. The methodology consisted of asking each student to answer to a socially relevant question, by means of (a) identifying key underlying psychosocial processes and (b) searching for adequate keywords in scientific databases such as PsycNet and Sociological Abstracts, in order to (c) select and critically compare two relevant articles that could answer this question. The acquisition of these competences was assessed with a rubric and related questions in the final exam. Results indicated both the effectiveness of this approach to teach competences in digital literacy and critical analysis through motivating questions, and the translation of these competences in other situations. This approach also showed to be more effective in teaching these ompetences than only giving lectures. This methodology is promising, as it provides an answer to how to give future professionals competences in answering effectively and rigorously to socially relevant problems in the Information Society.

This contribution proposes the transla-tion of chapter VIII of the novel Celia en la Revolución, by Elena Fortún. This well-known author of children’s books, redi-scovered and re-evaluated in Spain by nu-merous studies that have placed her in a prominent position in today’s literature is, however, completely unpublished in Italy. This novel has a special value. Its originali-ty lies in the realistic way in which a chil-dren’s text deals with such a thorny subject as war. Fortún doesn’t omit any element of reality, showing the degradation of an entire society and the absurdity of the conflict. After a brief analysis of the trans-lation, we will show how, despite the diffi-culties it presents due to the situational nature of the text, this novel should be known and translated in Italy, not as part of a children’s collection, but for a wide audience that can understand it in all its facets
