    Walter Kasper

    No full text
In 1964, the young Walter Kasper (born in 1933) was granted by the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Tübingen the licence to teach dogmatic theology on the basis of a thesis on Philosophie und Theologie der Geschichte in der Spätphilosophie Schellings (Philosophy and Theology of History in Schelling’s Late Philosophy). Kasper’s interest in Schelling, himself a student at the Evangelisches Stift at Tübingen, thus originated in the context of his university studies in the school of J.R. Geiselmann and developed in parallel with his theological education. For this reason, it is impossible to form a correct idea of Kasper and his whole theology unless one is willing to take into account this background, not least because he himself has always consciously and forcefully recognised this fact and seen in it his own centre of gravity. Kasper’s work and thought were shaped in a lasting manner during his university years. In fact, his entire academic oeuvre has been nurtured from this fecund origin so much so that he became one of the most well known names associated with the Catholic school at Tübingen to which he gave a new, creative impulse having himself been profoundly inspired by it. ‘He always emphasised his own roots not only as a teacher of theology and a member of the teaching faculty of this institution, but also as bishop’ and cardinal. The principal intention of the present article is precisely this: to return to this beginning and elucidate these decisive years for Kasper in broad outline by way of a relecture and interpretation of his book on The Absolute in History and the particular manner in which he interpreted the so-called second Schelling, an author whom he approached in the wake of Walter Schulz and at practically the same time as Xavier Tilliette. The analysis will subsequently move on into the more properly theological field

The Faithfulness of God in the Theology of Walter Kasper

Degree Awarded: Ph.D. Systematic Theology. The Catholic University of AmericaCardinal Walter Kasper is an important figure in contemporary Roman Catholic theology and church politics. His critics, however, lead one to ask whether his theology presents a viable option in the contemporary theological landscape. This dissertation proposes to analyze and evaluate Kasper's theology from the vantage point of the theme, Gottes Treue, or the faithfulness of God. It shows that a notion of faithfulness qualifies Kasper's understanding of history and freedom, categories basic to his theological thinking. Moreover, the faithfulness of God to creation revealed in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit expresses for Kasper the central content of the Gospel. That the reality of salvation consists in divine fidelity implies for Kasper that the Church, as universal sacrament of salvation, carries out its mission through dialogue, which includes ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Conversely, other Christians and Jews bear witness to divine faithfulness in their communities through dialogical encounter with Catholics. Kasper argues that God's fidelity is constitutive of the object of faith and of theological inquiry, namely, theological truth. This correlates with Kasper's "postmodern" conception of tradition as an open system consisting in a dialogical interplay among several loci: scripture, the artifacts of the spiritual and intellectual traditions of the Church, the authoritative rulings of its leaders, the supernatural sense of faith common to all the baptized. Kasper's reflections on truth also suggest that the truth of faith will remain essentially beyond our grasp until the end of history. In this regard, however, Kasper's theology has developed. Whereas his early writings emphasized the eschatological dimension of revealed truth, more recent writings make room for a substantial apprehension of truth in the present through the habitus of faith. To this extent, Kasper's thought proves to be compatible with the Thomistic theological tradition. The present study argues for an expansion of the basic categories of Kasper's theology to make explicit its openness to deeper reflection on the truth of faith as already present in the believing subject

    Towards the tumble resistant microlight

    No full text
The tumble mode is a pitching departure from controlled flight which leads to a pitch autorotation that is generally unrecoverable – resulting in vertical ground impact, usually preceded by in-flight breakup (the mechanism for which, surprisingly, can sometimes prevent loss of life). This was identified in work led by the British Microlight Aircraft Association beginning in 1997 as a response to a number of fatal accidents in Rogallo winged microlight aeroplanes, although the tumble is also known to occur to hang-gliders. This paper explains how this class of aeroplane is controlled, and how it has been found that they can enter the tumble mode. The mechanism by which the tumble can be entered is described. This has led to work showing how flight testing can be used to establish and demonstrate resistance to tumble entry – particularly important with increasing number of very high performance flexwings. These flight tests will be explained, together with the significance of the results. Recent accident investigation work has also shown a new mechanism of tumble entry, through partial failure of the A-frame structure and the pitch-trimmer mechanism. Also described is a possible relevance to well known historical accidents to flying wing aeroplanes– specifically the YB-49 and dH-108, and discovered data on the characteristics of the BKB-1flying wing glider; are also described

Mercy as the key to understanding Christianity according to Cardinal Walter Kasper

    No full text
Odwołując się do bogatej tradycji kulturowo-religijnej, W. Kasper w sposób pełny i całościowy buduje teologię miłosierdzia, sięgając do Biblii i Tradycji. Nie jest mu obce doświadczenie świętych i głos ostatnich papieży. Niemiecki kardynał w miłosierdziu upatruje lek na wszelkie problemy związane z ludzką egzystencją i cywilizacją.The aim of this article is to present the mystery of mercy as a key to understanding Christianity in the light of the writings of Cardinal Walter Kasper. In the first part, the author presents the understanding of mercy that is contained in other religions. The second part is devoted to the biblical image of mercy. The third part presents a systematic view of this mystery. The fourth part concerned new accents in the view of mercy that can be found in the thought of W. Kasper. The conclusions that the author draws from the conducted analyses are as follows: the mystery of mercy is contained in great religious systems. No religion forgets the poor and the needy. Mercy holds an important place in both monotheistic and Far Eastern religions. The biblical understanding of this issue is extremely original. Both the texts of the Old and New Testaments demonstrate originality, drawing attention to the mystery of God who is merciful, as well as Jesus, who passed through the earth showing mercy. Referring to the rich cultural and religious tradition, W. Kasper builds a theology of mercy in a full and comprehensive way, reaching out to the Bible and Tradition. The experience of the saints and the voice of the last popes are not alien to him. The German cardinal sees mercy as a cure for all problems related to human existence and civilization

Mieszczanin krakowski Kasper Suski de casa Castiglione (zm. 1589) jako posesjonat w księstwie zatorskim

The son of the royal stonemason Nicolas Castiglione (d. 1545), who came from Florence to Kraków, Kasper entered into family connections with the nobility of Zator and Oświęcim through the purchase in 1554 of Sucha and Stryszawa, and then through his marriage in 1556 with Jadwiga, daughter of Stanisław Słupski and Anna née Grzymułtowska. In spite of Adam Kamiński's thorough study, the figure of Kasper as a bourgeois as well as a goldsmith from Kraków and a property owner turns out to be still not fully known. Thus, the settlement processes or cultural changes taking place thanks to Castiglione-Suski have been overlooked, and hence the picture of the 16th century in local communities is still rather hazy. Meanwhile, thanks to people like the Cracovian burgher Kasper, Renaissance fashions and patterns of thought, as well as Reformation trends, reached the Silesian district established in 1564. Complementing the existing knowledge on the person and activities of Kasper Suski, the author presented his family circle, his accumulated wealth, and the network of mutual relations with the nobility of the Zator and Oświęcim principalities (mainly the neighbouring estates).Syn przybyłego z Florencji do Krakowa królewskiego kamieniarza Mikołaja Castiglione (zm. 1545) – Kasper – poprzez zakup w 1554 r.

The crisis of the Church and its relative issue of renewal is a recurring subject. The contemporary world and society demand a justification for the Church’s presence in all the aspects of life. The German theologian, in undertaking a reflection on these issues does so in an orderly, creative and positive way. The author of this article bases his analysis of the thought of W. Kasper on two sources: Die Kirche Jesu Christi. Schriften zur Ekklesiologie I, as well as The Catholic Church. Essence, Reality, Commission. In presenting this article, the author draws from the texts of the Theologian from Tubingen in presenting a description of the contemporary society and the world, in which the Church finds itself. Then, the author discusses five courses the future Church can take in order to be: (1) resolute, (2) open, (3) accountable, (4) ecumenical, and (5) socially engaged.Temat kryzysu Kościoła i łącząca się z nim kwestia odnowy stale powraca. Współczesny świat i społeczeństwo domagają się uzasadnienia obecności Kościoła we wszystkich sferach życia. Niemiecki teolog, podejmując refleksję nad tą problematyką, czyni to w sposób uporządkowany, twórczy i pozytywny.

Life\u27s Issues with Lloyd Rosen and guests Jeff Rasley & Dolphin and Susan Kasper In his 7th book, Jeff Rasley continues his search to find, explore, and explain authentic community. Pilgrimage: Sturgis to Wounded Knee and Back Home is a very personal memoir in which the author traces his roots to the bloody massacre of the Sioux at Wounded Knee. He deconstructs a local myth of his childhood in Goshen, Indiana about an Indian attack on the town, which never occurred. And then compares his experience in working with the Rai people in the Nepal Himalayas to the genocidal treatment of the American Plains Indians by his ancestors. It\u27s all about finding meaning in the deep connectedness of human community. www.jeffreyrasley.com The unique foundation of Evolve Now’s work, The Art of Remarkable Relationships, has been developed and is facilitated by Dolphin and Susan Kasper, a mother and son team, who bring a unique depth and connectedness to the work of human evolution. This Art is a powerful vehicle in unlocking our innate ability to cultivate more connected, meaningful and authentic lives. Because Susan and Dolphin are themselves grounded in their own awakening, they are able to provide living knowledge of that; where it comes from, and how to master it in this life. http://evolvehds.com
