Detergency in Liquid CO2
In this dissertation we study Detergency in liquid Carbon Dioxide. Detergency is the cleaning performance of additives, surfactants in particular, in washing fluids. Liquid CO2 is under consideration, for environmental and toxicological reasons, to replace perchloro-ethylene as the solvent in textile dry cleaning technology. Inherent problems of such a transition were confronted with the methodology of chemical engineering design. The Basic Cycle of Design (BCD) approach was used as a pathway for designing a detergent. The BCD also establishes the structural framework of the thesis, which can, therefore, be read as records from a successful product engineering project, in which an effective detergent has been designed for a new dry cleaning solvent. The Dynamic Detergency Model (DDM), which succeeds to explain the role of surfactants in the washing operation, is used as a rational starting point for the design of a detergent in liquid CO2. According to this model, such a surfactant must be: sparingly soluble in the solvent, surface-active and able to form micelles in the solution. The different experiments carried out (solubility, interfacial-tension and dye solubilisation measurements), show that a number of molecules of the homologous polyoxyethylene/alkane series, generally described by the shorthand formula CiEj did indeed behave as surfactants and can be then considered detergents for liquid CO2. In the technical evaluation of the detergents, at laboratory as well as at semi-pilot scale, high washing performances were obtained. They are, indeed, as good for dry cleaning textiles as the present perchloro-ethylene (Perc) technology.Applied Science

The influence of steady blowing and roughness on transitional separated boundary layers
This paper presents the results of a study between two types of forcing, namely steady blowing and a tripwire, on the control of laminar separated boundary layers. The analysis focuses on the differences in the transition process between these two types of forcing. This effect will be studied using direct numerical simulation. The main differences consists in the coherent structures formed during transition and the overall kinetic energy growth

Isolation and culture of human CD133+ non-adherent endothelial forming cells
Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been the focus of many clinical trials due to their roles in revascularisation following ischemic events such as acute myocardial infarction as well as their contribution to vascular repair during organ transplantation. Research on EPCs has been controversial due to the lack of distinct markers expressed at the cell surface and varying methods for isolation and culture have resulted in the identification of a multitude of cell types, with differing phenotype and function, all falling under the label of "EPCs". The most widely documented EPCs isolated for cell therapy are adherent in nature and lacking the progenitor markers such as CD133 and therefore unlikely to represent a true circulating EPC, the cells mobilised in response to a vascular injury

BMPR2-expressing bone marrow-derived endothelial-like progenitor cells alleviate pulmonary arterial hypertension in vivo
Link to a related website: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1111/resp.13552, Open Access via UnpaywallBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by increased resistance in the distal pulmonary arteries, ultimately leading to right heart failure and, despite the available therapeutics, survival remains poor. Reduced expression of bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 (BMPR2) is strongly associated with PAH. Cell therapies are of interest in PAH, but whether this approach can upregulate BMPR2 is not known. Our objective was to evaluate a preclinical cell therapy approach based on upregulation of BMPR2. METHODS:We assessed the therapeutic effect of intravenously injected BMPR2-augmented rat bone marrow-derived endothelial-like progenitor cells (BMPR2-BM-ELPC) on PAH in the rat monocrotaline (MCT) model. RESULTS:The cells accumulate in the lungs with negligible systemic distribution, but the vast majority are lost from the lungs by 24 h. Lungs from rats treated with BMPR2-BM-ELPC exhibited an immediate increase in BMPR2 and related intracellular signalling proteins. Treatment with BMPR2-BM-ELPC attenuated PAH as demonstrated by a reduction in right ventricular hypertrophy as well as right ventricular systolic and mean pulmonary arterial pressures. In addition, this treatment reversed PAH-induced vascular remodelling with a significant reduction in vessel thickness and muscularization. In view of the short retention time of injected cells in the lungs, the mechanism for the effects seen may be intracellular communication via exosomes. In support of this hypothesis, we demonstrate that BMPR2-transduced outgrowth endothelial progenitor cells (OECs) release BMPR2-expressing exosomes. CONCLUSION:BMPR2-augmented ELPC demonstrate therapeutic benefits in the rat model and may have clinical translation potential.Rebecca L. Harper, Suzanne Maiolo, Rebekah J.
