    Assessing database and network threats in traditional and cloud computing

    Cloud Computing is currently one of the most widely-spoken terms in IT. While it offers a range of technological and financial benefits, its wide acceptance by organizations is not yet wide spread. Security concerns are a main reason for this and this paper studies the data and network threats posed in both traditional and cloud paradigms in an effort to assert in which areas cloud computing addresses security issues and where it does introduce new ones. This evaluation is based on Microsoft’s STRIDE threat model and discusses the stakeholders, the impact and recommendations for tackling each threat

    Optimal pricing and service provisioning strategies in cloud systems: a Stackelberg game approach

    Cloud computing is a recent advancement where service providers offer hardware infrastructures, platforms, and software applications as services to users on the basis of a usage-based pricing model. As Cloud-based systems have been increasing in size and complexity and operate in a continuously and unpredictably changing environment, it has become increasingly more important and challenging to develop effective provisioning and pricing schemes. In this paper we consider several Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, that offer a set of Web services using the Cloud facilities provided by an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider. We assume that the IaaS provider offers a pay only what you use scheme similar to the Amazon EC2 service, comprising flat, on demand, and spot virtual machine instances. We propose a two stage provisioning scheme. In the first stage, the SaaS providers determine the number of required flat and on demand instances by means of standard optimization techniques. In the second stage the SaaS providers compete, by bidding for the spot instances which are instantiated using the unused IaaS capacity. We assume that the SaaS providers want to maximize a suitable utility function which accounts for both the QoS delivered to their users and the associated cost. The IaaS provider, on the other hand, wants to maximize his revenue by determining the spot prices given the SaaS bids. We model the second stage as a Stackelberg game, and we compute its equilibrium price and allocation strategy by solving a Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC) problem. Through numerical evaluation we study the equilibrium solutions as function of the system parameters

Based on the interview with the author, they were written in the 1980s. Red, green, and black ink are used in the manuscripts. The red and green ink are used to highlight key words and phrases. There are frequent insertions of Arabic phrases, which include quranic quotations and opening and closing formulae. The manuscripts contain several poems written by Serigne Mouhammadou Masokhna Lo, including a biographical eulogy of Serigne Mor Mbaye Cisse, a renowned Murid scholar and educator who lived and taught in Diourbel; and criticisms of social problems such as lack of discipline and good behavior, disorderly conduct, adultery, the negative consequences of alcoholism among men, women, young and old, and among leaders and their followers. The materials also include historical accounts of the five year long construction of the mosque of Diourbel (Jumaay Ndiaareem) using chronograms; the discussion between Serigne Modou Moustapha (who led the effort) and the French engineer responsible for the construction on the equipment needed; the construction of the railway between Diourbel and Touba; the personal qualities of Serigne Bassirou Mbacke; a tribute to Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and to Serigne Mbacke Madina; the motivation of 28 kaamil (copies of the Qur'an) written by Serigne Fallou Mbacke for his father and spiritual guide Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba; and a tribute to Serigne Bousso, among others. The materials also contain a poem on coffee and its benefits. Digitized on 17 July 2011. According to the author, the documents were written in the 1980s. Some images are difficult to read due to the poor condition of both the originals, which have ink stains, and the writing (especially those entirely written with black inks).     Cloud computing and context-awareness: A study of the adapted user experience

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Today, mobile technology is part of everyday life and activities and the mobile ecosystems are blossoming, with smartphones and tablets being the major growth drivers. The mobile phones are no longer just another device, we rely on their capabilities in work and in private. We look to our mobile phones for timely and updated information and we rely on this being provided any time of any day at any place. Nevertheless, no matter how much you trust and love your mobile phone the quality of the information and the user experience is directly associated with the sources and presentation of information. In this perspective, our activities, interactions and preferences help shape the quality of service, content and products we use. Context-aware systems use such information about end-users as input mechanisms for producing applications based on mobile, location, social, cloud and customized content services. This represents new possibilities for extracting aggregated user-centric information and includes novel sources for context-aware applications. Accordingly, a Design Research based approach has been taken to further investigate the creation, presentation and tailoring of user-centric information. Through user evaluated experiments findings show how multi-dimensional context-aware information can be used to create adaptive solutions tailoring the user experience to the users’ needs. Research findings in this work; highlight possible architectures for integration of cloud computing services in a heterogeneous mobile environment in future context-aware solutions. When it comes to combining context-aware results from local computations with those of cloud based services, the results provide findings that give users tailored and adapted experiences based on the collective efforts of the two

    SLA-aware resource management for application service providers in the cloud

    In the today Internet of Services, one of the challenges of Application Service Providers (ASPs) is to fulfill the QoS requirements stated in the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) established with different consumers and to minimize the investment and management costs. Cloud computing is the promising solution for ASPs that increasingly demand for an elastic infrastructure. In this paper, we formulate the ASP resource management as an optimization problem and propose both reactive and proactive heuristic policies that approximate the optimal solution. The proposed policies leverage on information about the system performance history and can be applied at runtime because of their reduced computational time. Our experimental results show that some heuristics based on prediction approximate the exact knowledge of the workload

    Collection development librarians have long struggled to meet user demands for new titles. Too often, required resources are not purchased, while some purchased resources do not circulate. E-books selected through patron-driven plans are a solution but present new challenges for both selectors and catalogers. Radical changes to traditional technical services workflows are required, and selectors must modify the selection process to give more choice to the user.     Bidding strategies in QoS-aware cloud systems based on N-armed bandit problems

    In this paper we consider a set of Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, that offer a set of Web services using the Cloud facilities provided by an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider. We assume that the IaaS provider offers a pay only what you use scheme similar to the Amazon EC2 service, comprising flat, on demand, and spot virtual machine instances. We propose a two-stage provisioning scheme. In the first stage, the SaaS providers determine the number of required flat and on demand instances by means of standard optimization techniques. In the second stage, the SaaS providers compete by bidding for the spot instances which are instantiated using the unused IaaS capacity. We put our focus on the bidding decision process by the SaaS providers, which takes place during the second stage, and apply N-armed bandit problems, in which the player is faced repeatedly with a choice among N different options, and every time he submits his decision evaluating past feedbacks. Through numerical experiments, we analyze proposed strategies under different scenarios and prove the SaaS providers ability to refine their behavior round by round and to determine the best bid so to maximize their revenue and achieve as many spot resources as possible, also addressing the importance of a trade-off between exploration and exploitation, i.e., among greedy and non-greedy actions
