Terraced chestnut and hazelnut groves in the Sturla Valley: historical patterns of local management.
This contribution illustrates some case studies related to the analysis
of terraced cultural landscapes linked to the practices of chestnut
(Castanea sativa Mill.) and hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) cultivations
present in Sturla valley and lower Fontanabuona valley, the hinterland
of the Tigullio Gulf (province of Genoa). The methodology used
during these researches - developed, over the years, by the Laboratory
of Environmental Archaeology and History (LASA - University of
Genoa) – comes from the meeting of different disciplinary fields and
the consequent combined use of archaeology, geographical-historical
sciences and applied natural sciences with a microanalytical approach.
The result is a method that integrates and leads to dialogue different
disciplines and type of sources: documentary (land registries, notarial
deeds, deeds of sale, etc.), cartographic, oral environmental and ground
sources (archaeological, sedimentary, geological). By comparing and cross-referencing data derived from these sources, it is possible to reach
a higher definition of the processes that generated the landscapes: in
particular «through the historical and archaeological reconstruction of
historical actions and practices it’s possible to reach the social groups
that were actors in this environmental history». Using the same sources
(sometimes the same cadastres or cartography) in different ways, it is
possible to describe the two landscapes - although rather common - as
two complex system of management of environmental resources and
full of social tensions
The problems of innovation in the management of science within the university: the special research programs sponsored by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA)
Fil: Vaccarezza, Leonardo Silvio. The author discusses the experimental management of a university research program aimed at defining the institutional policies of the organization. He goes onto describe a management “instrument” considered as rather new in the university environment. He also mentions some of the effects and hurdles originating in the distinctive organizational features of university-based research and development activities. Then he analyzes these means of taking part in the creation of a scientific field, the role played ¡n these processes by the morphology of the field and existing leaderships, etc. Among other things, experience has shown that in order to achieve an effective control of the research, it does not suffice to determine a guiding list ,of subjects to be studied
A Multi-Layered View of Autonomy as the Foundation of Moral Responsibility
Tis article defends the centrality of practical wisdom in medical practice by building on a monistic view of moral
virtue, termed the “Aretai model,” according to which possession of practical wisdom is necessary and sufcient for virtuousness, grounding both moral growth and efective moral behavior. From this perspective, we argue that practical
wisdom should be conceived as a cross-situational ethical expertise consisting of four skills:moral perception, moral
deliberation, emotion regulation, and moral motivation. Conceiving of practical wisdom as both overall virtuousness and ethical expertise makes it possible to deal adequately with the uniqueness of concrete ethically relevant situations.
We contend that this becomes particularly evident in the context of medical practice, both in terms of decision-making
and action-taking, especially in the most challenging or contentious clinical cases. We conclude the article by suggesting the potential implications of the Aretai model for continuing education in medical and healthcare professions
