Remembering Alvise Vittori (Riva del Garda 1932 – Trento 2018)
Obituary for Alvise Vittori (Riva del Garda 1932 - Trento 2018), a well-known Italian ichthyologist, limnologist and all-round ecologist. After many years of service as an aquatic biologist, he was appointed Director of the Experiment Station, where he oversaw its transition to the now Fondazione Edmund Mach. His professional interests ranged from fisheries to lake and stream monitoring to habitat restoration. Alvise was instrumental in starting lake monitoring in Trentino (1973) and in the 1980s founded the San Nicolò Laboratory on Lake Garda. He was involved in lake restoration projects, most notably Lake Caldonazzo, initiated the ecological mapping of Trentino’s waterways using macroinvertebrates and developed the first Fisheries Management Plan (Carta Ittica -1983) in Italy
ferme e correnti in Italia. Le segnalazioni, basate sulla osservazione dello stadio pelagico (medusa) e non sulla ricerca dello
stadio bentonico (polipo), probabilmente sottostimano la distribuzione della specie in Italia. The first documented sighting of the jellyfi sh Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester from Lake Levico (Trentino, Northern
Italy) was in August 2015, but records of this species in other lakes of the province (Lago Santo di Cembra, Lago di Lavarone,
Lago dei Poiani, Lago di Garda) go back to the early 1990s. C. sowerbii has a relatively wide distribution in Italy, with
records from 40 freshwater ecosystems. These sightings, based on the observation of the pelagic stage (medusa) and not
on the benthic stage (polyp), probably underestimates the real distribution in Ital
First record of Corbicula fluminalis (Müller, 1774) in Lake Garda (Italy), living in sympatry with Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774)
The first record of Corbicula fluminalis (Müller, 1774) (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Veneroidea: Corbiculidae) in Lake Garda (Italy) is presented. This clam was observed in July 2008 along the lake shore, with a high number of shells; sampling of lake sediment revealed the presence of live specimens. C. fluminea (Müller, 1774) has already been recorded in Lake Garda since 2002. The need for further studies on the presence and the spread of the two clams and the biodiversity of the invertebrate community of the lake is underlined, in relation to recent records of other invasive species, such as Dikerogammarus villosus (Sowinsky, 1894)
Life history traits of the American spiny-cheek crayfish in two subalpine lakes
The ecology of Faxonius limosus in non-native habitats is poorly understood
and needs to be broadened to prevent and control its spread and protect native riverine decapod
populations. The aim of this study was to describe some autecological traits of a spiny-cheek
crayfish population established in two subalpine Italian lakes. We sampled the littoral zones in
May and October 2014 by using hand-nets and baited traps: captured individuals were then
sexed, weighed and measured. A population analysis was also performed using the modal progression analysis of length compositions. Our findings underlined the existence of four age
classes (with a life expectancy of 3.5/4 years), a lower growth rate compared to other crayfish of
the same family, and shift of the reproductive period respect to other studies on F. limosus. Our
results suggested that eradication activities ought to be developed based on the situationality,
and mitigating projects should be integrated with a continuous and practical monitoring programme to assess eventual changes in the ecological requirements of the investigated species.
This becomes increasingly important as reintroduction or restocking of indigenous species could
also be considered as a management strategy for F. limosus populations in the study area
