Indiascapes. Images and words from globalized India Volume della rivista Anglistica, a.i.o.n. An interdisciplinary journal
Indian culture is playing an increasingly imposing role in shaping new globalised scenarios,
contributing dramatically to a radical interrogation of its national, linguistic and geo-political ties.
This issue of Anglistica tries to highlight a few of the possible outlines that emerge from the
multifarious, variegated, complex cultural background offered by the Subcontinent, in both its
domestic and diasporic dimensions. Images and words from globalised India form a landscape in
which narrative, history, myth, fiction, the entertainment industry, linguistics, politics and the arts
stay side by side, each adding a piece to a tessellated, composite and obviously partial sketch.
Indiascapes, to paraphrase Appadurai, is the term we have chosen to represent this current
assemblage of languages and perspectives which speak about India’s cultural richness, its
complexity and ambiguity, trying to convey the strong appeal it is increasingly exercising upon the
de-territorialized world-space of the imaginary. The object of this group of essays could thus be
summarized as disparate but convergent reflection upon the vernacular terms of the inscription of
modernity on the globalised culture of the largest, most geopolitically important, but also
contradictory democracy in the world
Transnational subjects cultural and literary encounters. Introduction
The volume collects the selected papers from the literary and cultural sections of the XXVII AIA Conference (Naples 10-12 September 2015). The chosen theme, Transnational Subjects: Linguistic, Literary and Cultural Encounters, proved ideally suited to arouse a consistent and articulated debate on a series of crucial questions from a large number of scholars. In tune with the critical framework outlined by Bill Ashcroft on globalization and its supra–national function, all contributions here engage with the tense entanglement of transnational, transitional and translational issues that mark our age of global networks and traumatic dislocation. This pervasive process of hybridization has also changed the approach to the theory and history of literature, calling for a revisionary debate on ‘world literature’ in which transnationality and interculturality help connect in unforeseen ways past and present texts, authors and translations
Ethical aspects of sexual medicine. Internet, vibrators, and other sex aids: toys or therapeutic instruments?
Introduction. Sexual health is the result of a complex interplay between social, relational, intrapsychic, and medical aspects. Sexual health care professionals (SHCP) may face several ethical issues. Some SHCP prescribe Internet pornography for both diagnosis and therapy and some others directly sell vibrators and sex aids in their offices. Methods. Five scientists, with different perspectives, debate the ethical aspects in the clinical practice of the SHCP. Main Outcome Measure. To give to the Journal of Sexual Medicine's reader enough data to form her/his own opinion on an important ethical topic. Results. Expert #1, who is Controversy's Section Editor, together with two coworkers, expert psycho-sexologists, reviews data from literature regarding the use of the Internet in the SHCP. Expert #2 argues that licensed professionals, who treat sexual problems, should not sell sexual aids such as vibrators, lubricants, erotica, and instructional DVDs to their clients. On the other hand, Expert #3 is in favor of the possibility, for the patient, to directly purchase sexual aids from the SHCP in order to avoid embarrassment, confusion, and non-adherence to treatment. Conclusion. Evidence and intelligence would suggest that both the Internet (in selected subjects) and the vibrators (in the correct clinical setting), with the due efforts in counseling the patients and tailoring their therapy, are not-harmful, excellent tools in promoting sexual health. Couple therapy with conflictual and distressed couples. therapeutic alliance, ruptures and repairs
When the intimate relationship is stressed and conflictual, great loneliness, angst and suffering emerge and represent a risk factor to partners mental and physical health (Whisman, 2007; Snyder, 2012), as well as parenting skills (Krishnakumar, 2000). There are consistent claims of the effectiveness of Couples Therapy (CT) in reduction of relationship distress and in mental and physical wellbeing of adults and children (Carr, 2009; Fivaz Depeursinge, 2015). However, in CT there is a high risk of drop-out (Allgood, 1991; Bischoff, 1993). Therapeutic Alliance (TA) in CT is one of the most important factors of maintaining the therapeutic process (Escudero, 2015). This study explores the TA in therapies with couples engaged in high levels of distress and conflict. The aim is to investigate: 1) TA in three groups of termination status of CT (Conclusion with Agreement, Without Agreement, No-Show. Bartle-Haring et al., 2012): differences between groups and intragroups (men vs women); 2) differences in therapists between groups; 3) interactive processes of Rupture and Repair of TA. The TA has been measured with SOFTA-o (Italian Validation, Mazzoni, Ciocca, Porcedda, 2015), Ruptures and Reparations have been identified with CIS-r (Colli, Lingiardi et al. 2014) and a qualitative scale specifically developed for the CT. Preliminary results are based on 239 sessions (110 agreement, 63 disagreement, 66 no-show) and show significant differences between groups in intrafamily alliance (F: 15.0, α.000), engagement and security of men (F: 5.6; α:.004; F: 4.8; α:.009), emotional connection of men (F: 6.9; α:.001) and women (F: 7.9; α:.000). There aren’t intra-groups differences. The groups of Without Agreement and No-Show have a statistically significant difference only for the Therapist's contributions in the dimensions of emotional connection (F: 19.9; α:.000). Learn more about TA is important because it can identify crucial clues for clinicians to prevent premature termination on CT

7.1.1 Ear & Nose Digital Library
Ciocca L, Fantini M, De Crescenzio F.

Conjugated polymer bio-hybrid interfaces for artificial retina and light-control of living cells
This thesis is concerned with the design, realization and opto-electronic characterization of a bio-hybrid interface, based on semiconducting polymers, presented as a new generation of Artificial Retina model and a novel platform for light-control and stimulation of living cells. Bioelectronics is a fast-growing field. It concerns the interface between electronics and biology. It has the potential to significantly affect healthcare and medicine by introducing scientific breakthroughs in medical therapies or prosthetic devices, improving lives of people with disabilities and diseases. Organic electronic materials are largely used in bioelectronics. In fact, these materials can overcome limitations of rigid standard electronic matter due to their unique features such as the “soft” nature, the ability to conduct ions, and biocompatibility. Nowadays there is a novel emerging field in this scenario: optobio electronics. Among organic electronic materials, there are light sensitive conjugated polymers. Semiconducting polymers used as photoactive layers claiming biocompatibility can offer excellent optoelectronic and mechanical properties such as visible light absorption, solution processability, the possibility of using flexible substrates, and easy tunability of color sensitivity. Thus, light sensitive conjugated polymers have been largely investigated as new interfaces for optical modulation of bioelectrical activity in several types of in vitro cell cultures, such as primary neurons and astrocytes, and in tissues, mostly explanted retinas from different animal models. This thesis presents a novel concept of bio-hybrid opto-electronic device. It is a new interface for in vitro light-control and stimulation of living cells and for investigating Artificial Retina models with the aim of sight restoration. The approach has been to investigate the double aspect of bioelectronics based on photosensitive biocompatible organic polymers i.e. the stimulation and the detection of biological signals both at the cellular and tissue level. The main objectives of this work are detailed in six chapters, as described below: Chapter 1: The basic concepts about biological systems are reviewed. Living cells and the plasma membrane, the retina and retinal diseases are briefly introduced. The main principles behind the bioelectricity and electrophysiology are discussed. To contextualize the work a state of art on electrical stimulation of retina and the visual prosthetic devices, based on inorganic electronics, which have had already a clinical trial is performed. Chapter 2: Organic Bioelectronics fundamentals are reviewed. The new opto-bio electronic field is introduced with special highlight on semiconducting polymers. An introduction on photovoltaic semiconducting polymers and a brief description of the occurring photovoltaic process are discussed. Then a state of the art analysis on semiconducting polymers interfaced with biological systems is discussed, with a focus on the artificial retinas studies using organic semiconductors. The concept of bio-hybrid device is introduced. Chapter 3: The experimental tools and techniques used for the design, fabrication and characterization of the conjugated polymer bio-hybrid device are reviewed. Chapter 4: The bio-hybrid photovoltaic device working principles and optoelectrical characterization are presented. The device optimization as a color-sensitive conjugated polymer ink-jet-printed pixelated artificial retina model is described. Finally, a water transfer method as a proof of concept for a possible artificial retina implantation is introduced. Thus, possible future application in tissue engineering and visual prosthesis are discussed. A scientific manuscript has been submitted (as first author). Chapter 5: The conjugated polymer bio-hybrid interface is presented here as a photo-electrochemical cell for in vitro light control and stimulation of living cells. Biocompatibility is demonstrated by cytotoxic kit-experiment. Light stimulation of living xxxviii cells onto polymer substrates may lead to changing in membrane potential. Neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) are investigated. We also unravel the possibility to control cells proliferation under light-treatment, when seeded and grown onto the bio-hybrid device photoanodic electrode. A scientific manuscript in collaboration with Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata is being prepared (as first author). Chapter 6: Conclusion and future prospects are discussed
