    Impact of cattle grazing on peat properties and diatoms

    Peatlands are a major carbon (C) sink and represent important habitats for nature conservation because of the occurrence of specifically adapted organisms. Peatlands are typically nutrient-poor environments, and thus extremely sensitive to nitrogen (N) depositions. In fact, increasing N inputs can cause a shift from a Sphagnum moss- to a vascular plant-dominated vegetation as well as an alteration of the mire geochemistry which, in turn, affects the litter composition and decomposition rate. Peatland is an extremely fragile ecosystem: at the European level, >60% of this habitat type has been lost just in the last decades. In Alpine peatlands, in particular, overgrazing has been identified as a main problem for habitat integrity and biodiversity. In the present study, six Belarus (50-cm deep) cores were collected from several peatlands located in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park (Trentino, Italy) mirroring a grazing-induced disturbance gradient. All cores were cut frozen into 3-cm sections, and analysed for dry density, water content, pH, EC, and elemental (CHNS) composition. Diatom taphocoenoses were also determined. In particular, diatom frustules were prepared using hot hydrogen peroxide and finally mounted in the Naphrax© resin to produce permanent mounts for identifications and counts. 400 valves were counted and identified to the species level in each slide using a light microscope at x1000 magnification. The whole procedure was kept quantitative to allow the calculation of absolute abundances (n-valves/g-peat-dw). Physical, chemical and biological parameters generally underlined how the grazing influence was clear mainly in the top 20 cm, and resulted in an increasing of density (up to 2×) and N concentration (up to 3×) as well as in a lower gravimetric water content (up to 50%). No significant differences were observed below 30 cm of depth. More than 100 diatom species were identified throughout the 6 cores investigated, and several of them are included in threat categories of the Red List for central Europe (e.g., Cymbopleura valaiseana, Eunotia hexaglyphis, E. triodon). Since diatoms can reflect major regional environmental gradients, they can be used as indicators of ecological conditions in peatlands. In fact, some species that are trivial (= frequent and often abundant) in mire environments in spite of being relatively rare at the overall level of European inland waters (e.g., Aulacoseira alpigena, Encyonema perpusillum, Kobayasiella micropunctata) were found in the cores from highly-grazed areas whilst several rare and sensitive species were detected only (or were clearly more frequent) in cores from mildly-grazed areas.     Auxin effects on Pb phytoextraction from polluted soils by Tegetes minuta L. and Bidens pilosa L.: Extractive power of their root exudates

    The principal impediment for Pb uptake by plants is the Casparian strip in roots. It prevents metals reaching the xylem, thereby hampering translocation to the aerial organs. In the root apices, young root cells have thin cell walls and the Casparian strip is not completely developed, which could facilitate Pb uptake by roots at these vulnerable points. However, as the phytotoxic effects of Pb reduce root growth and enhance suberization, entry of Pb into the plant is avoided. We propose that the application of root growth promotors could be an important complement in the phytoextraction of Pb from polluted soils, due to their effects on produced biomass, Pb toxicity, and root exudate production. A greenhouse experiment was carried on to evaluate the auxin application effect on the Pb uptake of Bidens pilosa and Tagetes minuta. These species were sensitive to auxins, but the phytotoxic effect of Pb was not reversed by this treatment. Root exudates capable of extracting Pb were produced only when the species were grown in highly polluted soils, indicating a behavioral response to Pb exposure which is desirable for phytoremediation.Fil: Salazar, María Julieta.     A partir de una de las premisas ancilares de la bibliografía material, que establece que las formas de los textos afectan su sentido, proponemos el análisis de cubiertas ilustradas, en tanto cumplen una función prefiguradora e intensificadora del texto. Dado que se trata de un primer discurso gráfico de tipo editorial más que autorial, ejemplificaremos de qué modo las ilustraciones de tapa generan interpretaciones que apuntan a distintos tipos de lectores. El texto seleccionado es una de las últimas novelas de Beatriz Guido, La invitación, publicada por Losada en 1979, por Alianza Editorial en 1982 y por Círculo de Lectores en 1984.According to one of the main concepts of the material bibliography, which states that the format of the book conditions the meaning of the text, we propose the analysis of illustrated covers and book jackets. Because it is a type of graphic discourse, it is closer to editorial design than the author of the text. However, illustrated covers are responsible for different interpretations and are addressed to different kinds of readers.     La historia de la expansión del Reino de los Francos bajo el dominio carolingio es un tema ampliamente explorado por la historiografía tanto desde el punto de vista de la expansión militar en sí misma como por sus consecuencias políticas, culturales, religiosas y económicas para el Occidente latino. Sin embargo, aunque la guerra fue un factor fundamental en esa expansión, no se ha estudiado profundamente qué significaba ese fenómeno para los teólogos carolingios.     A transitory regime : water supply in Conakry, Guinea

    Both consumers and the government benefited from reform of the water system in Conakry, Guinea, whose deterioration since independence had become critical by the mid-1980s. Less than 40 percent of Conakry's population had access to piped water - low even by regional standards - and service was intermittent, at best, for the few who had connections. The public agency in charge of the sector was inefficient, overstaffed, and virtually insolvent. In several ways, the reform introduced to the sector in 1989 under a World Bank-led project was remarkable. It showed that even in a weak institutional environment, where contracts are hard to enforce and political interference is common, private sector participation can improve sector performance. The authors discuss the mechanismsthat made progress possible and identify factors that inhibit the positive effects of reform. Water has become very expensive, the number of connections has increased very slowly, and conflicts have developed between SEEG (the private operator) and SONEG (the state agency).     Accumulation of lead and associated metals (Cu and Zn) at different growth stages of soybean crops in lead-contaminated soils: food security and crop quality implications

    The Pb, Cu and Zn content, the physicochemical parameters in soils (EC, OM%, soil texture and pH) and the metal accumulation of Glycine max plants at different growth stages were evaluated. Topsoil and soybean samples were collected in the vicinity of a former battery- recycling plant, with the results showing that only the concentrations of Pb in soils corresponding to sites located near to the lead emission source were above the maximum permissible levels. However, soybean crops accumulated Pb above the permitted levels at all studied sites, revealing a potential toxicological risk for direct consumption. Thus, the accumulation of Pb in soybean was directly related to the translocation factor of the metal from roots to aerial parts of the plant. This was evidenced as a lower accumulation at early growth stages and a higher accumulation at maturity, with the distribution between organs coinciding with nutrient incorporation and remobilization in the plant. Moreover, the bioconcentration factor revealed that the bioaccumulation of lead in soybean was a consequence of the lead-recycling plant activity in the past. Taken together, results of the present study demonstrated that soybean crops can incorporate and accumulate potentially toxic metals, such as lead.Fil: Blanco, Andrés.     Biosolid compost amendment increases soil fertility and soybean growth

    This study evaluates the effect of soil amendment with biosolid compost with wood shavings and yard trimmings on soil fertility, and soybean (Glycine max) biomass, productivity, nutrient uptake, and potential accumulation of toxic elements, like Pb. Soil from agricultural fields under intense crop production were amended with compost at 0%, 5% and 10% w/w rate, and incubated under controlled conditions before planting. Then, a greenhouse experiment was performed to study soybean growth, physiological indicators of productivity, and antioxidant response (chlorophylls, carotenes, antioxidant power, soluble sugars and proteins), as well as nutrient (Mg, Cu, Mn, and Zn), and Pb accumulation. Moreover, soil nutrient status (pH, cation exchange capacity, organic matter, nitrogen, sulfur, extractable cations, and soil microbial activity) were analyzed. The results showed that compost improved soil fertility and microbial activity, including nodulation in soybean roots. Biomass production was strongly increased; content of chlorophyll, carotenes, sugars, and protein also increased. Grains were produced only in the compost treatments. Compost addition also reduced nutrient deficiencies in leaves and grains, and Pb accumulation in soybean. Our findings contribute with information about the role of biosolid compost in sustainable agriculture: allowing the recovery of soil fertility in agricultural soils under intensive production and, consequently, improvement of crop growth.Fil: Vergara Cid, Carolina.     Effects of co-cropping Bidens pilosa (L.) and Tagetes minuta (L.) on bioaccumulation of Pb in lactuca sativa (L.) growing in polluted agricultural soils

    Polluted agricultural soils are a serious problem for food safety, with phytoremediation being the most favorable alternative from the environmental perspective. However, this methodology is generally timeconsuming and requires the cessation of agriculture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate two potential phytoextractor plants (the native species Bidens pilosa and Tagetes minuta) co-cropped with lettuce growing on agricultural lead-polluted soils. The concentrations of Pb, as well as of other metals, were investigated in the phytoextractors, crop species, and in soils, with the potential risk to the health of consumers being estimated. The soil parameters pH, EC, organic matter percentage and bioavailable lead showed a direct relationship with the accumulation of Pb in roots. In addition, the concentration of Pb in roots of native species was closely related to Fe (B. pilosa, r D 0.81; T. minuta r D 0.75), Cu (T. minuta, r D 0.93), Mn (B. pilosa, r D 0.89) and Zn (B. pilosa, r D 0.91; T. minuta, r D 0.91). Our results indicate that the interaction between rhizospheres increased the phytoextraction of lead, which was accompanied by an increase in the biomass of the phytoextractor species.     Availability of lead in agricultural soils amended with compost of biosolid with wood shavings and yard trimmings

    Lead-polluted agricultural soils are a serious problem for food safety, with organic amendment being a promising mitigation method from the environmental perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate lead availability and the effectiveness of the application of compost of biosolid with wood shavings and yard trimmings in contaminated soils. The physicochemical (Pb distribution, organic matter, pH, electric conductivity, cation exchange capacity, nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, carbonates, exchangeable cations, sodium) and biological parameters (the microbial activity obtained by fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis) in Pb-polluted and non-polluted agricultural soils were evaluated after the addition of biosolid with wood shavings and yard trimming compost. Topsoils (lead-polluted and control) were collected in the vicinity of a former battery-recycling plant, amended with compost (0%, 5%, and 10%), and incubated in controlled conditions for 118 days. The results showed that lead availability decreased significantly, and the nutritional quality of the soils increased in the soils amended with 10% of compost. Taken together, the results of the present study indicated that compost amendment could be an effective method for mitigating the negative effects of lead in agricultural soils.Fil: Ferreyroa, Gisele Veronica.     Social rights and economics : claims to health care and education in developing countries

    The author analyzes contemporary rights-based and economic approaches to health care and education in developing countries. He assesses the foundations and uses of social rights in development, outlines an economic approach to improving health and education services, and then highlights the differences, similarities, and the hard questions that the economic critique poses for rights. The author argues that the policy consequences of rights overlap considerably with a modern economic approach. Both the rights-based and the economic approaches are skeptical that electoral politics and de facto market rules provide sufficient accountability for the effective and equitable provision of health and education services, and that further intrasectoral reforms in governance, particularly those that strengthen the hand of service recipients, are needed. There remain differences between the two approaches. Whether procedures for service delivery are ends in themselves, the degree of disaggregation at which outcomes should be assessed, the consequences of long-term deprivation, metrics used for making tradeoffs, and the behavioral distortions that result from subsidies are all areas where the approaches diverge.
