Reverend Fordow Crtfuvch Once there was an old shoe cobbler who dreamt one Christmas Eve that Jesus would come to visit him the next day. The dream was so real that he was convinced it would come true. So the next morning he got up and went out and cut green boughs and decorated his little cobbler shop and got all ready for Jesus' visit. He was so sure that Jesus was going to come that he just sat down and waited for him. The hours passed and Jesus didn't come. But an old man came. He came inside for a moment to get warm out of the winter cold. As the cobbler talked with him he noticed the holes in the old man's shoes, so he reached up on the shelf and got him a new pair of shoes. He made sure they fit and that his socks were dry and sent him on his way. Still he waited. But Jesus didn't come. An old woman came. A woman who hadn't had a decent meal in two days. They sat and visited for a while, and then he prepared some food for her to eat. He gave her a nourishing meal and sent her on her way. Then he sat down to wait for Jesus. But Jesus still didn't come. Then he heard a little boy crying in front .of his shop. He went out and talked to the boy and discovered that the boy had become separated from his parents and didn't know howto get home. So the cobbler put on his coat, took the boy by the hand and led him home. When he came back-to his little shoe shop, it was almost dark and the streets were emptied of people. And then in a moment of despair he seemed to hear a voice saying,” O shoe cobbler, lift up your heart. I kept my word. Three times I knocked at your friendly door. Three times my shadow fell across your floor. I was the man with bruised feet. I was the woman you gave to eat. I was the boy on the homeless street.” Jesus had come. The cobbler just didn't realize it. One of the many wonderful stories told around Christmas to make us think about the times when, perhaps, Jesus has visited us - and I wonder what kind of reception he got Did we welcome him in, like the cobbler did, or were we too busy, too caught up in the world to recognize that the Prince of Peace was here with us? Make time for Jesus in your life. A good start would be to attend a church service Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. He is the Reason for the Season after all. Ph 1-877-364-2929 Greg Deitz Invisible Fence Brand VILLAGE OF ALBERTA November 29, 2016 Dear Residents & Ratepayers, The Village of Arrowwood will have a general meeting in the Arrowwood Community Hall on Thursday, December 8th at 7:30 PM. The Village of Milo will have a general meeting in the Milo Community Hall on Monday, December 12th at 7:00 PM. We will provide a brief overview of village business and welcome public input on 2017 capital projects. While we realize that December can be a busy month for many, we are hoping to get a good turnout for these meetings. As a reminder, all unpaid 2016 property taxes will be considered in arrears after December 31, 2016. While interest is incurred on current year taxes once the tax payment deadline has passed, tax arrears continue to incur interest penalty charges every three months. The Village of Arrowwood is pushing ahead with a water treatment plant upgrade, as well as a sanitary/sewer rehabilitation project. It was decided by the village council that MPE Engineering should be hired to complete this work for Arrowwood. The sanitary rehabilitation project in Milo is nearly complete and I would like to thank MPE Engineering and Shawne Excavating and Trucking Ltd. for their dedicated work. Both villages are looking at road and sidewalk projects in 2017. It is hard to believe that another year is almost past. I would like to thank all village employees for the work they do to maintain Arrowwood and Milo. Their dedicated work on general administration and regular operations of the water treatment facilities is essential. We are fortunate to have such good individuals working to provide services. Also, we can thank our village workers for hanging holiday lights in anticipation of the Christmas season. Their efforts have kept both municipalities looking neat and trim throughout the year. On behalf of the Villages of Arrowwood and Milo I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, as well as a happy, safe and prosperous New Year. Sincerely, Christopher Northcott Chief Administrative Officer VILLAGE OF MILO ALBERTA VILLAGE OF MILO COUNCIL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, October 18, 2016 The organizational meeting of the council of the Village of Milo was held in the Milo Library on Tuesday, October 18th, 2016, commencing at 7:00 pm. Louis Myers: - Has not attended any committee meetings since the last council meeting. - Wondered if Administration had assisted the library with applying for an insurance claim under their insurer, AMSC. The CAO responded that this was not necessary given that the library's builder has taken full responsibility for all structural issues to date. - Wondered if Administration could provide an update on the playground maintenance works as directed by council in the last minutes. The CAO responded that Don Robbie had sourced our some materials for this project which would cost approximately $280.00 from UFA in Vulcan. It is thought that the Lions Club might be willing to purchase the materials for the playground. To date Don still has some time that he can give the village and remain within budget. Given the potential liability risk, as well as the availability of good weather and Don's time, the CAO directed him to proceed with the repairs. - Wondering if Administration had updated its shared costs with Arrowwood. The CAO explained that he was working on it this week. Regular Meeting of Village of Milo Council on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 Page 1 - Wondering if Administration had issued invoices for the new water and sewer services given that Mr. Mingo had asked him about it. CAO had explained that these had been issued and that he had delayed issuing them given some of the other matters that were being ironed out with Shawne Excavating. b. Barry Monner: - Attended a regional subdivision and development appeal board hearing over a Hutterite Colony near Carmangay. Large turnout and well organized arguments. - Vulcan Business Development Society and Vulcan Tourism have hired a new manager to work with both societies. Res. The CAO attended the county's open house on the new Area Structure Plan on October 12th. - Email correspondence with Vulcan County administration, including a copy of the proposed plan and comments provided by the village's municipal planner were distributed to council for their review. - Discussion. c. R^vere^to! ^oroloi/v Crfli/vch Here we are at the lead up to Christmas. In the Christian Church this is the season of Advent. In terms of children, it is the eternity that lays between them and the opening of gifts piled high under the tree. But there is that little clause put in by Santa Claus - he knows who has been naughty or nice. Imagine having to be nice to your brother/sister for a whole month! The other 11 months apparently didn't count. Most of us, I am afraid, deserve the lump of coal treatment. Sprinkled throughout the Bible are many lists of things to do and things not to do. But for those of us that often come up a bit short, we should refer to St Paul's letter to Timothy. His main instruction is, "Do your best." When it comes right down to is, that is all we can do. We can strive to be more Christian, better Christians, more like Christ - just better people - but all we can do is our best. It seems that some are better at doing their best than we are. St Francis was probably the closest to best that this world can produce and the rest of us struggle with the burden of striving for goodness. At Christmas, it is even more of challenge to 'do your best.' There are so many temptations in our world. But I don't think that anywhere is it written that life is meant to be easy. Our choices get wider and wider and the chances of choosing correctly each and ever time are slim. But the goal isn't to achieve, but to attempt. ♦ So at this festive and joyous time don't set yourself up for failure, just do your best. And if you are sincere in this effort, then that is enough. God is nothing if not forgiving. December Services: Sunday, 8th - 9:00 am Sunday, 22nd-9:00 am Christmas Eve, Sunday 24th - 5:00 pm see you. u/v C-huroh! Lomond village celebrated their 100th anniversary with a weekend full of events and, most importantly, the sharing of memories from days gone by. This Sunday, August 7th, in Milo, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the new church, aptly named Hope, which replaced the original church, destroyed by fire January 9th, 1965. What an expression of faith that the congregation of that time decided that the church should be rebuilt. What a marvel that it took 18 months for the planning and building to result in a completed church at a cost of $30,000. The next Sunday, August 14th, the village of Milo will celebrate the 85th anniversary of its incorporation. I am always in favour of celebrating any occasion. We are given no assurance of anything other than today, so it is best that we celebrate each day that is given to us. I pulled out the Snake Valley II history book and just a glance through its pages draws you into the story & history of a small prairie community, not all that unlike the one in which I grew up, although that was located in God's Country. (Saskatchewan, for those of you not up on your geography) I see the stores and businesses that were and are no more. I see the young men and women who served their nation in the world wars. I see the couples who celebrated their 40th, 50th wedding anniversaries. The stories that they could have told about life at the beginning of the century, the start of the community on the cold and unforgiving prairie. The sense of community and the fast friendships forged by the need to help or ask for help from ones neighbours. The faith that was required to leave their native land and head out for an adventure. How many of us would be prepared to leave all that we know and hold dear to set out for a foreign land and an uncertain future? I do not think that we give enough credit to those pioneers for all that they overcame, what they accomplished in only perhaps three generations. What will the village of Milo be like in 2031? Where will you be in 2031? Where will I be in 2031? Notice the abundance of question marks? All we can be sure of is that God has a plan, and that plan will be revealed in His good time. He provided for our grandparents, parents and for us, and we can be assured that He will provide for our children, their children and for all generations to come. And for that we give thanks as well. There are two candidates running for the position of councillor in this by-election. The term of office will be for just over one year, or until the general municipal election in October of 2017 when all three positions on the village council can be contested. Residents of Arrowwood and Milo have one month remaining in which they can appeal their Assessment Notice. Should you wish to meet with the municipal assessor please notify myself directly, or leave a message for me at each municipal office. The Milo council is aiming to finalize its 2016 Operating and Capital Budget, as well as the tax rate bylaw, this coming month. While payment of property taxes is due in Arrowwood at the end of August, in Milo the deadline for payment of property taxes will be the end of September. I am planning to have a General Meeting this fall whereupon we can provide an overview of village business and priorities, anticipating public feedback and input. If you wish to be notified by email of this General Meeting, please ensure that the village offices have your email address on file. Much work and planning has gone into the 85th Village Anniversary and School Reunion in Milo. Come out and take part in the activities running from the 12th to the 14th of August, seeing all that the Milo Community has to offer while re-connecting with friends. I would like to thank all volunteers, especially Katie Walker and Barb Godkin, for their efforts in organizing this event. Students and staff worked with Trickster Theatre to develop the production that week. The school gym was set up with the “stage” basically in the middle, the audience seated around 3 sides, and the traditional stage was set up for a shadow play. There were a number of different little plays by various grades, singing and drumming in between sets by Alex Scalplock and the Natosapi drummers, dancing with audience participation to a native dance and the Virginia reel, the shadow play (picture above), and refreshments after. Robert Phillips 403-485-8233 Justin Thompson 403-485-8125 My thoughts Rev. Gordon Cranch I receive emails from the Society of St John the Evangelist monastery in Cambridge, Mass. This is a summary of a bit of Monastic Wisdom from Br. David Vryhof. I have a memory of my fifth grade teacher asking us to write a short paragraph describing the things in our lives for which we were thankful. I sat for the longest time just staring at that piece of paper. I couldn't think of a thing for which I was thankful. I was surrounded by gifts, but didn't recognize them as gifts, and I couldn't begin to express my gratitude for them. I naively assumed that everyone had food and clothing, a loving family and a comfortable home. I was unaware of how privileged I was to enjoy these gifts on a daily basis, and simply took them for granted. Gratitude springs from the awareness that we have been given a gift. Often this awareness comes upon us in sudden and unexpected ways. We are walking along and suddenly our breath is taken away by the beauty of autumn leaves, or we are talking with a close friend and suddenly we realize what a gift this day is and how unexpected and undeserving we are. Our lives have been enriched. We feel grateful. We can nurture a spirit of gratitude by cultivating our awareness that we are surrounded by gifts. But to become aware of these gifts is not enough. Gratitude moves beyond the recognition of the gift to the recognition of the giver. In some ways, the gift itself is secondary in importance. What is more important is the exchange that takes place when we express our gratitude. The offering of a gift is only complete when we receive it with gratitude, and when that gratitude is expressed. Without the expression of gratitude, something is missing, for both the giver of the gift and the one who receives it. We Christians proclaim that God is the giver of all good gifts. We acknowledge that all that we have and all that we are is the result of God's divine goodness and love. God is the giver of every good gift: the gifts of nature, the gifts we receive in and through others, even the gifts of our selves. Jack Sutherland, a friend to many in the district, has made a very generous donation of 100,000 to the Lions Club of Milo, recognizing the nearly 65 years of service that this club has provided to Milo and Queenstown. In the spirit of Mr. Sutherland's donation, the Club has decided that these funds will be directed toward the Milo Community Hall Kitchen Renovation Project, rehabilitating a facility that has served the community well since 1985. While this project is organized under the auspices of the Milo & District Agricultural Society (the organization that owns the hall), President Lloyd Deitz graciously thanked Mr. Sutherland, on behalf of Milo Lions, at the milestone birthday celebration on November 23rd. December proved to be another busy month for the club. Not unlike Wayne Newton in Las Vegas, Milo's own Mr. Entertainment, Lion Greg Deitz, made a come back tour as bingo caller at the Pancake Supper and Turkey Bingo on December 6th. Fifteen turkeys were won, funds were raised for club projects, and the Milo School Council raised significant dollars from their bake sale. Everyone was happy to see Lion Greg back in action! The Lions Christmas Party was on the third Wednesday of December. A great turnout was had for this annual Stag Night, celebrating the season with complementary beer and loads of Chinese food. The Club would like to thank Master Chef, Wayne Lin, for his contribution toward the festivities! The Milo Lions leveraged their influence with Santa Claus to convince him that visiting the students and teachers at Milo Community School would still be a worthwhile. Candy bags were handed out after each and every student had a chance to speak with Santa. He appreciated everything they had to tell him—although a few might want to consider more frequent therapeutic consultation with a trained professional— and says he will be back next year. REPORTA HIGHWAY PROBLEM 1-888-877-6237 1-888-VS-ROADS My thoughts... Revered c^ordouv Crfti/tch I told those at church some time ago that Reese came up to me at lunch one Sunday and asked me how to get to heaven. I was kind of dumbstruck by the question, especially as Reese is not yet 4. I gave a suitably glib answer, but I continued to think about it and on the next Sunday I gave a slightly more • definitive answer. I have been thinking about the question on and off ever since. I suppose it takes on a slightly different sense of urgency at 72 than it does at age 4. All the songs and hymns that we sing Sunday by Sunday about heaven and the great reunions with those we have loved and have gone before us. But that doesn't answer the question of how we get to heaven. Last month, we had our usual Maundy Thursday dinner and went on to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. At that time Jesus gave us His directions for eternal life. This is His summary of the great Commandments. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." If we can do just these two things everything else will fall into place. What surer path to Heaven can there be? All the promises that we have received are awaiting their fulfillment. We will be reunited with those we have loved and lost. We will, with God's help, one day reach that eternal shore. Whatever age we are now, we are fortunate to have lived and grown up in such a time of medical advances that have assisted us in living this long. And we look forward to even greater advances that will offer longer and better lives to us. We must always remember that our time on earth is limited and we must do our part while we are here. But this life will surely end one day and we will die. The perishable cannot inherit the imperishable. That is how we get to heaven. Gordon Cranch Last Christmas, Grandpa was feeling his age, and found that shopping for Christmas gifts had become too difficult. So he decided to send cheques to everyone instead. In each card he wrote, "Buy your own Christmas present!" and mailed them out early. He enjoyed the usual flurry of family festivities, and it was only after the holiday that he noticed that he had received very few cards in return. Puzzled over this, he went into his study, intending to write a couple of his relatives and ask what had happened. It was then, as he cleared off his cluttered desk, that he got his answer. Under a stack of papers, he was horrified to find the gift cheques which he had forgotten to enclose with the cards. Now I don't have any grandchildren but I did send a Hallowe'en card to my great-great nephew and intended to put 10 in it. I do empathize with anyone who gives cash or gift cards for gifts. Times have changed. Tastes have changed. It is difficult to fathom the mind of a teenager to pick out something deemed appropriate. So this year, cash it is again. But the point of all this was brought home to me sometime, somewhere in the summer, and I wrote it down so that I could pass it along to you- Christmas is not your birthday. So as you run around putting the last minute touches on your house, bake that last batch of cookies, run to the city for yet another gift (in case junior doesn't have enough already) and then ignore the person whose birthday it is, you might at least have the grace to give a thought to the Child of Bethlehem, whose birth and life it is that we are to remember and celebrate. All of your Christmas preparations are for naught if they do not include a trip to church to join with the assembled faithful in worshipping at the manger and celebrating the birth of the new born King. Blessings to all at this Joyous time of year, and remember: Christmas is not your birthday. Students from Milo School gathered Thursday to honour Canada’s veterans, and learn more about a hometown war hero long since passed, A seven-minute documentary about Harlo “Terry” Torger Taerum was shown during the community event, documenting the Milo School graduate’s pivotal role as a member of 617 Squadron and the celebrated Dambusters. During Operation Chastise in May 1943,19 Lancaster bombers flew a top-secret mission aimed at destroying three dams in the Ruhr Valley. The mission succeeded at destroying two dams and damaging the third. Taerum was hand-picked to serve as the lead navigator on the mission, considered one of the most daring air raids of the Second World War. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his exceptional navigational skills that safely guided the Lancasters at such low altitudes that navigational equipment would not function. Instead, the southern Albertan used a compass, landmarks and the stars as his guides. While the video documented Taerum’s heroics with Bomber Command, two of Taerum's school mates in attendance at the ceremony reflected on their own memories of the wartime hero.Harold, who was a couple years ahead of Taerum at Lake McGregor School, an elementary and junior high, recalls Taerum arriving at school on a horse pulling a simple two-wheeled cart. In the cart were his three younger siblings who were too small to make the nearly 6.5- kilometre route to school. Janetta, who attended Milo High School with Taerum, remembered him as an excellent student who had “such a heavy load to carry. Taerum was the oldest of four children and was just 11 when his father drowned in Lake McGregor. Though still just a boy himself, Taerum helped his mother Hilda run the family farm. Janetta remembers Taerum riding his bicycle to and from the Milo High School every day from a farm nearly 10 kilometers out of town, doing farm chores at home, and still managing to be an excellent student. The Northcotts’ daughter Kathy said it's wonderful to share Taerum’s story with students at Milo School.“Here he was, just a kid from Milo,” Kathy said. “It shows we can do great things and we can make a difference.” He wasn’t the only war hero celebrated at the event. Grade 8 students, John Bertschy, Nash Nelson and Chris Thomley, shared their research into other Canadian heroes, including First World War pilot Billy Bishop. Adam Prentice, a Grade 7 student who carried the Canadian flag in the ceremonial colour guard, said it was interesting to get to learn about Taerum and the Dambusters. Prentice, who recently joined the air cadets, said he couldn’t imagine what it must have been like for Taerum to be shipped off to war in Europe. Taerum was killed when his plane was shot down in September 1943. He was just 23. His younger brother, age 18, also was killed in action. About 30 members of the community stayed following the remembrance ceremony to watch a BBC documentary “The Dambusters 70 Years On." The event was co-sponsored by Milo School and the Lions Club of Milo.Alberta Government News Release: Nov 09, 2013 Government Alberta honours Canadian troops with new licence plate The Redford government is giving Albertans another way to support the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces with the launch of a new licence plate. The plates, which bear the Yellow Ribbon and the Support our Troops slogan, will be available for preorder early next year. The new plates will cost Albertans 150. This includes the regular registration fees as well as expenses for production and delivery. Revenue beyond these costs will go directly to the Support our Troops campaign to assist members of the Forces and their families in Alberta. "Albertans admire the men and women of the Canadian Forces who put their lives on line, away from the comforts of family and home, as they stand up for the rights and freedoms of Canadians and people around the world. The Alberta government is honoured to offer a new licence plate as a way we can demonstrate our gratitude to them and give back to members and their families through the Support our Troops campaign." Manmeet S. Bhullar, Minister of Service Alberta “Our troops are proud of their service to Canada and appreciate the recognition from Albertans. I know they will be honoured when they see these licence plates on the vehicles of Albertans and the proceeds will help provide essential support to those who need it." Brigadier-General Christian Juneau, 3rd Canadian Division Commander, the Army in the West The new licence plate complements Alberta's veterans’ plates, which feature a poppy in honour of former and currently serving members of the Canadian Forces, as well as members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or other Canadian police departments who served under NATO or the United Nations. Nearly 21,000 veterans’ plates have been issued since the program began in February 2005, and in 2011, the Alberta government extended availability of the plates to motorcycles. Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.Invisible FenCe Brand Western Canada The best in Electronic Pet containment and behavioral products. IN ATTENDANCE: Mayor Rafael Zea / Mayor Rafael Zea Deputy Mayor / former Councillor Katie Walker Councillor / Deputy Mayor Barry Monner Councillor Elect / Councillor Scott Schroeder Chief Administrative Officer Christopher Northcott 1. CALL TO ORDER Mayor Zea called the meeting to order at 7:18 pm. Chief Administrative Officer Christopher Northcott administered the Oaths of Office for Rafael Zea, Scott David Schroeder and Robert Barry Monner. Paperwork signed. 2. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA Res. No. 2013-11-04-24: Moved by Mayor Zea that Council approve the agenda as presented. CARRIED 3 REPORT BY_CAO ON ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS / COMMENTS BY PREVIOUS COUNCIL a. Christopher Northcott, Chief Administrative Officer: - CAO explained the place of the organizational meeting, that no other regular business is to be conducted. - CAO informed Council that he was working on material to bring Council up to speed, that he was tentatively looking to have a special meeting of Council on November 13, 2013, at 8:00 PM. - CAO turned the floor over the former Councillor Katie Walker. b. Katie Walker, former Councillor: Former Councillor Walker noted that it had been a challenging term that she often found it difficult to get a lot of her questions answered. - She told how the Subdivision and Crystal Blue Developments has presented huge challenges to the Village. Organizational Meeting of Council, November 4, 2013 Page 1 - She noted how initially, given Milo's location, there was discussion about Milo possibly providing regional water to either Arrowwood or Lomond. She noted how the Village had also looked at the potential for taking over the McGregor Lake Reservoir recreation area and had undertaken some discussion with Alberta Parks to that effect. - Councillor Monner added that Alberta Parks had identified McGregor Lake as being one of the most developable lakes in Alberta. - Former Councillor Walker suggested that Council consider getting a minute taker, freeing up the CAO of this task. She also thinks that it is important for the Council to ensure some mechanism whereby tabled items get carried forward. She noted that it can take a while for the Village to finish business that it undertakes. - She noted that often times business is undertaken and nothing is ever done to follow up on these plans. - Former Councillor Walker also noted that she thinks it is important for Milo to have adequate representation at all committees and boards of which it is a member. She had the pleasure of sitting on the board for Vulcan Business Development Society (VBDS) which has brought into the area $1.6 million, has helped to drive tourism, the Roger Brooks branding initiative, and working to see that Vulcan becomes the most technologically advanced town in Southern Alberta. She told how Milo has benefited from all VBDS activities, be it the website, be it the initiative. Meetings for VBDS, she noted, are held in Vulcan. - Former Councillor Walker told about Southgrow, the regional economic development initiative, which recently completed a report on water for economic development. She noted that they have supper meetings in Lethbridge. Former Councillor Walker told about the Vulcan District Waste Commission that runs the waste transfer stations. Former Councillor Walker told about the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Association (SAEWA). Former Councillor Walker told about the Oldman River Regional Services Commission (ORRSC), the regional planning organization that has supper meetings in Lethbridge. Former Councillor Walker noted that she has binders from all of these organizations and will leave them in the office for anyone who is interested. Gordon Cranch If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough. Meister Eckhart October brings us to Thanksgiving Day, the one day set aside to give thanks, in this case, for the harvest. Families will join together for a turkey dinner, and in a few of those homes, will stop to give thanks to the Creator for all the goodness and loving kindness given to us, His most unworthy children. This Thanksgiving Day what do we have to be thankful in the Year of Our Lord 2020? While the world is still in the grips of a pandemic, we can give thanks that we have been spared, thus far. Perhaps we can be grateful for the extra time spent with our immediate family (yes, I know that can be a two edged sword) and all the more grateful as we can expand beyond our immediate family albeit slowly and carefully. This year has resulted in bountiful crops, with an early harvest, plentiful yields, good harvesting weather - a harvest season not seen in quite a few years. But, of course, we should not need a day of the year, or even a bountiful harvest to give thanks to God. The many blessings bestowed on us are beyond measure, but we take them for granted. A war refugee, a person fleeing from persecution, someone with no food or shelter, clean water, no sanitation - I don't think these people would be quite so thankless if they were to change places with us. We can see the horrors on TV each night, but that is far away, and we are so far removed that it really does not affect us. There but for the grace of God... So if for only once in your life say thank you and that will be enough. When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude. G. K. And did you know that this person, as an entrepreneur, built the building we now see on Main Street with their own capital, at their own risk? Well, it's true. In fact that person also set up the agency in Arrowwood, as well as managing the location in Bassano. That person is Ms. Virginia Toly, and we at the Can Opener are very pleased to present you with another community profile. First a bit about Virginia: • She was born in England, and immigrated when she was nine months old. Her father was a teacher, and answered the call in Canada for teachers. After a brief return to England to care for Virginia's grandfather, the family returned to Canada and settled in Tilley. • After high school Virginia attended the University of Lethbridge for two years, but like many of us, didn't find a particular career path that called out to her. • However, Virginia did fall in love, and settled in Rolling Hills to raise a family, before moving to Bassano. • One day Virginia happened to be in the bank in Bassano, who were looking for staff. (She was hired the next day.) Virginia first worked in Bassano, then managed there, for 15 years. • Virginia has two sons: one is a Fish & Wildlife Officer in High Level Alberta, and the other is an electrician with Pronghorn Instrumentation out of Bassano. • Virginia lives with her partner Reg (who has three sons!) on an acreage. Virginia Toly in front of the ATB Financial Agency in Arrowwood About five years ago, after a broad corporate decision by Scotiabank to close many rural branches, the opportunity arose for ATB Financial Agencies in Arrowwood and Milo. As an entrepreneur, Virginia did her research, and personally put up the risk capital to build an agency office (from the vacant lot up) in Milo, and renovate a space in Arrowwood. (It should be noted that while Scotiabank did donate their premises to the town of Milo, they stipulated that no financial institution should occupy it. We need to remember that Main Street Milo simply did not have a vacant and appropriate building to replace the Scotia Bank.) The ATB Financial agency building on Main Street in Milo. Virginia visited Milo before taking her financial "leap of faith", and found Milo to be "a very cohesive community right from the get-go". She had curled in Milo, so certainly knew the town. Virginia was also struck by the anger within the community at losing a financial institution which they had faithfully supported for 100 years, through world wars and a depression. Virginia is in fact the owner of the ATB Financial building in Milo, so you could say that in Milo, ATB Financial services are brought to us by Virginia Toly! Four years ago the new branches in Milo and Arrowwood opened to the public. When I complemented Virginia on the beautiful small building that now houses the Milo ATB financial agency, she modestly referred to it as a "nice little space" that houses everything she and her staff need. I asked Virginia if she likes to cook. She replied to me that she has been previously advised to regularly dust her oven. Like many people who live in a retail environment during the day, meeting, greeting, and conversing, Virginia enjoys calm and quiet evenings. Virginia doesn't like winter, but does enjoy curling. Proof of Virginia's love for summer is her white convertible. I also asked Virginia (again, as a successful entrepreneur) for advice she would offer to children, or young people. Virginia's answer was to start small, but start. Many young people view a bank account as just a temporary holding facility, where money waits to be withdrawn, often in its entirety, and spent on a short-term item. Instead, Virginia's advice was to have that separate savings account, where a portion of earned money could be left alone, and "learn to leave it". In terms of financial advice for young couples to retirees, Virginia was quick to point out that we should never think that investing, or research about finances, is too difficult, or must be done alone. Virginia also stressed that she is part of a team of personal bankers with the emphasis on "personal". If you have a goal in mind, Virginia Toly and her team at ATB Financial Milo, Arrowwood, & Bassano can help you get there. CW(^xM' November is the month for remembering. 2014 is a special anniversary year. In August, 1914, the world plunged in to the 'war to end all wars'. As we are all too aware, from our experiences of the past 100 years, it was really the start to most of the major conflicts of the 20th century. We don't need to rehash history and try to place blame. None of that will bring honour to a generation of young men who were killed, maimed or wounded on the battlefields of Europe 1914 -1918. In the carnage of the war, there are many examples of individual courage and compassion, countered by the inhumane ways devised to kill humanity. The use of mustard gas in warfare for the first time must rank as one of the most heinous of all time. 100,000 people died and 1,000,000 more were affected by the gassing. The gas did not restrict itself to soldiers, it killed anyone in its path. In the 4 year span of the war, the total casualties were 36 million (16 million died, 20 million wounded). So why on earth would we want remember such a horrible event in the history of the world? “Thosewho cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat That is why we must continue to remember, not only for Remembrance Day, when we pay tribute to those who, at the call of King & Country, laid down their lives for the peace and freedom that we enjoy today, but so that such a conflict may never again take place on earth ever again. "Only the dead have seen the end of war."2 For those millions of maimed and wounded that had to try to return to civilian life following the war's end, there was not even the inadequate assistance given to our present day veterans. Post traumatic stress disorder was not acknowledged, although shell shocked would have been the term used then. Soldiers bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."2 Anyone who took part in the fighting, in any capacity, and lived would have had emotion scars that would never heal. "War is hell. 4 And the Great War was possibly the most hellish of all wars. That is why we must remember it, so that never again should humanity be subject to such carnage. "Lest we forget, Lest we forget."5 (1),(2) Philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist George Santayana (3) World War II General Douglas MacArthur (4) American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman (5) Poet and novelist Rudyard KiplingThe month of October has flown by like a witch on a broom. We have had a very busy month full of activities and learning opportunities. Fire Chief Byron Thompson and Vulcan County Fire Marshall Stuart Larson made a surprise visit to our school for Fire Prevention Week. They initiated the fire alarm and observed us as we made our way out of the school. The elementary students watched a video and talked with Byron and Stuart about the importance of smoke detectors. Thanks to the Milo School Foundation we were able to have the Science in Motion program travel to our school. Our fantastic presenter Jen worked with the different grades doing hands on science experiments, we even had a mini-planetarium set up in the gym, the 7/8 class learned the science behind roller coasters, the grade 9 students made a pickle glow and the 1/2/3 class made ice cream with liquid nitrogen. The Milo School Foundation also provided funding to have author David A. Poulsen bring his writing workshops to our school. The students really enjoyed the humorous way he shared his love for writing and the creative process. The volleyball team practiced and played games and finished their season by hosting a one day volleyball tournament. The tournament was a huge success with teams from Arrowwood, Champion, Brant, and Carmangay schools competing. Thanks to Mealane Deitz for organizing the concession and to Leanne Bertschy for helping work the concession. The junior high held elections for student council and we are happy to see such an enthusiastic group take on the leadership of our student body. The student union is now starting the Mom’s Pantry Fundraiser, students will be coming around with order forms or they are available on our website as well. We are hopeful that driveway access will be corrected back to a normal state of affairs, that proper grades and drainage swales will be installed before drainage becomes a significant issue. The Village of Arrowwood can appreciate the frustration that this delay has caused and it has tried to work with residents to accommodate all access concerns that required an immediate solution. It appears that the Villages of Arrowwood and Milo have found a contractor to undertake some final infrastructure work for 2014. In Arrowwood, water and sewer services needs to be extended to the new Arrowwood Co-op development, along with some ditch grading and the installation of a new fire hydrant. In Milo, a water leak, a fire hydrant repair and some minor roadwork needs to be undertaken. As mentioned last month, the workshop “Finding Agreement” was hosted by Arrowwood and Milo and considered by all who attended to be highly worthwhile. Although designed for municipal officials, it is available for other community groups and organizations. The facilitator, Barbara McNeil, works for the Alberta Energy Regulator but has a longstanding relationship with Alberta Municipal Affairs. She has over twenty years experience as a mediator across a wide range of issues, including senior trainer in the University of Calgary’s Conflict Resolution Program, with experience as a member of the Municipal Government Board and Federal Farm Debt Review Board. Arrowwood and Milo were happy to have participants from both villages, Vulcan County, Town of Vulcan, Village of Carmangay, and diverse range of community associations. On October 2nd, the Village of Milo filed notice of appeal with Vulcan County and the Municipal Government Board (MGB) under section 690 of the Municipal Government Act. This appeal concerns a dispute with Vulcan County over a proposed residential subdivision development that it deems could have a detrimental impact on the village absent inter-municipal co-operation. As legislated, the MGB will open a hearing for this appeal within 60 days of notice being filed. A1B Financial Open 9:30 - 3:00 Monday - Thursday, 9:30 - 4:00 Friday 121 Centre St., Milo, TOL 1L0 403-599-3981 My thoughts... Rev. Gordon Cranch I receive emails from the Society of St John the Evangelist monastery in Cambridge, Mass. This is a summary of a bit of Monastic Wisdom from Br. David Vryhof. Humility as a virtue and a way of life has been highly prized and much sought after in Christianity. Both the Old and New Testaments praise it; Jesus models it. teaches it, and urges His disciples to seek it; and St Paul frequently commends it to early Christian communities. Humility has been especially valued in the Christian monastic tradition: monastic writers have seen it as a necessary condition for a right relationship with God and with others. But the virtue of humility has gotten 'bad press' in the modern era. Too often it has been associated with passivity, complacency, and unquestioning submission to those in authority. When we think of humility, we are likely to conjure up images of people with low self-esteem; people with fawning, weak personalities; or people who are afraid to assert themselves. Modern Western culture is rightly suspicious of that kind of 'humility' because it denies our intrinsic worth as human beings. But true humility, as Jesus taught it, is something other than the distorted image of humility that has been scorned in modern times. True humility maintains a health balance between proper self-esteem - based on the knowledge that we are beloved children of God who are made in God's own image - and an honest awareness and acceptance of our limitations, weaknesses and faults. Authentic humility encourages us to take our rightful place in relationship to God our Creator, to our fellow creatures, and to the earth on which we all live. Authentic humility, because it is grounded in truth, will lead to freedom: "The truth shall set you free" (John 8:32). Jesus is prepared to teach us this humility: "Learn from me", He says, "for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29) The sure road that leads to God is first humility, next humility, and lastly humility. Ask me the question as often as you may, my answer will always be the same. Augustine of Hippo True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less often. C. S. I ran up and quickly took the picture, trying to zoom and not disturb them much, but, needless to say, as soon as that last egg hatched, the parents quickly rushed the babies off to the trees. - Photo by Barb Godkin The Milo Can Opener A Community Newsletter published by Volunteers Layout Editors: Subscriptions Notices Cameron Klem Barb Godkin Barb Godkin Can be left at Milo Library Any Can Opener volunteer 403-485-1592 403-485-8389 403-485-8389 Advertising: (Single Insertion) (Annual - includes subscription) Business Directory 5.00 5.00 60.00 Quarter Page 6.00 6.00 72.00 Half Page 8D0 8D0 96.00 Full Page 15.0015.00 180.00 Classified Ads 2.00FreeItems:EventNoticesAnnouncements:Wedding,AnniversaryBirths,Showers,etc.CardsofThanksNewsItemsArticlesofInterestEditorialContent:LetterstotheEditorarewelcome.Allsubmissionsmustbesigned.Letterswillnotbeprintedunlesssigned,andrequeststoremainanonymouswillnotbehonoured.Deadlines:Thedeadlineforphotoready(JPEG)adcopyorarticlesisabout5daysbeforetheendofamonth.Pleaseallowadditionallayouttimeforunformattedcopy.TheCanOpenerisnormallyprintedthelast2daysofamonth.SubscriptionRates:Singlecopy"CoverPrice" 2.00 Free Items: Event Notices Announcements: Wedding, Anniversary Births, Showers, etc. Cards of Thanks News Items Articles of Interest Editorial Content: Letters to the Editor are welcome. RA/erei/vd <^ordoi^ Crtwh "If there comes a little thaw, still the air is chill and raw, here and there, a patch of snow, dirtier than the ground below, dribbles down a marshy flood; ankle-deep you stick mud in the meadows while you sing, 'This is Spring'." Christopher Pearce Cranch One can assume that somewhere back in time, the author is a relative of mine. Although from any reading of his life, he was not at all like me. When I was in Boston some years ago, I was at the cemetery that he is buried in, but I didn't know that at Hie time or I would have searched him out. In March, we do get those hints of spring, and can be certain that it is on its way, but probably won't arrive until April. But we do get the blessed assurance that spring is on the way. This year, Easter is late and so is Ash Wednesday. On March 6th, we will gather at the church to have our yearly reminder of the meaning of Lent pressed on to our foreheads. With a smudge of ash, we are reminded that all of life it transitory, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, in the words of the funeral sendee. Each Lent, we get 40 days to prepare us for the miracle of Easter, to prepare ourselves to receive that most precious gift, the gift of eternal life in Christ. In Lent, we are encouraged to give up any vices that we may have. We are also encouraged to devote some of our time to charitable works, or for some, perhaps it is easier and more practical to give a donation. We put away, until Holy Week, the Gloria and any alleluias from our Lenten services. Three things we might try this Lent are: - Daily prayer - our link to God. - Fasting - our link to ourselves. - Alms giving -^our link to our neighbours in need. This doesn't seem too tall an order for any of us. It is a chance to scale back our daily life, to consider the needs of others, the wealth that God has given to each of us, and the need to treat our bodies better. And, so I wish to all a meaningful Lenten season - until we arrive at the commemoration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the events of I Ioly Week which follow, culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Through The Year God be with you in the Springtime When the violets unfold, And the buttercups and cowslips Fill the fields with yellow gold; In the time of apple blossoms, When the happy bluebirds sing, Filling all the world with gladness- God be with you in the Spring. He approached her and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know me?" She responded, ‘Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.' The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?" She again replied, “Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife, Mr. Williams. Yes, I know him." The defense attorney hearing this, closed his eyes, and attempted to die on the spot. At this point, the judge banged his gavel, and asked both counsellors to approach the bench. In a very quiet voice, the judge then said, “If either of you idiots asks Mrs. Jones if she knows me, I'll find a way to send you both to the electric chair." Richardson Pioneer, PJC Trucking Ltd., The Elevator, Prairie Perfection Catering - . and Milo Seed Cleaning Association . . . ■ ..... . ■ ■ Letter to the Editor bear Editor; I was in the Milo Library recently and bought a copy of Queenstown Memories by Bill Lahd. For anyone familiar with the Queenstown area reading the book will provide a nostalgic trip down memory lane and I highly recommend it. Although our family left Queenstown in 1955,1 still have many indelible memories etched in my mind. For instance, when I hear a meadowlark (they were everywhere), I think of Queenstown. When I drive by the community hall and look north I remember how Railway Avenue once bustled with activity and how elevator row loomed proud and tall. I also remember defending myself and the Kingsmith kids (or so it seemed at the time) from a threatening garter snake with one of Eddie's butcher knives. My parents in particular remained in contact with Queenstown and area residents for many decades and returned to the area quite often. It was as though they remained a part of the community even after being absent for so many years and so when I saw the pictures in Bill's book of the burning of many of the remaining Queenstown buildings in 1971 it was profoundly sad and brought back an emotional reminder of times gone by. I am thankful that Bill Lahd and other members of his family made the considerable effort to preserve Queenstown's history sharing the story of this once dynamic prairie hamlet with grateful readers.
