Scotochroa buprestoides (Kirby) NOVA SCOTIA: Guysborough Co.: Trafalgar, 19.vii. 1992, S. and J. Peck, JCC; Halifax Co.: Ten Mile Lake, 29.vii– 13.viii. 1997, D.J. Bishop, NSMC; Pockwock Lake, 29.vii– 13.viii. 1997, D.J. Bishop, NSMC; Pogwa Lake, 29.vii– 13.viii. 1997, D.J. Bishop, NSMC. Newly recorded in Nova Scotia. All specimens in Nova Scotia collected in young red spruce (Picea rubens) forests, mostly with flightintercept traps.Published as part of Majka, Christopher G. & Pollock, Darren A., 2006, Understanding saproxylic beetles: new records of Tetratomidae, Melandryidae, Synchroidae, and Scraptiidae from the Maritime Provinces of Canada (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea), pp. 45-68 in Zootaxa 1248 on page 55, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17297

Wireless sensor network for determining boat motions and hydroelastic responses

A flexible segmented ship model has been tested in a series of head sea wave conditions including regular, irregular and a rogue wave. The model has a typical frigate form and is constructed using a flexible central spine against which four segments are mounted. A three node wireless sensor system, which currently acquires data at up to 30Hz was also attached to the model. These wireless development sensors were supplied as part of the ESPRIT programme and incorporate 9 degrees of freedom using rotational and translational accelerometers and a 3 component magnetometer. The data acquired was compared to those obtained using the traditional pitch and heave potentiometers and a standard heave accelerometer. Overall, the system, although still requiring further development to improve data acquisition rate, performed well with good correlation observed between the various measurement components. The practical advantages are the low mass and low power requirements of such a wireless sensor networ

The 9th Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) International Conference on Offshore Site Investigation and Geotechnics (OSIG) closed with a Rapporteur’s report given by the author. This paper provides a record of that report, transcribed from a video recording. The presentation slides are shown as Figures.</p

DEFRApH - Sample collection and handling procedures

All chemical and biogeochemical process in the sea are affected by the acidity of the water. Acidity is therefore fundamental property of seawater. The growing concern that the acidity of the oceans might be increasing has revealed weaknesses in our knowledge of this fundamental property and its variation in space and time. In 2008 the DEFRApH project (DEFRA contract ME4133) was initiated to provide this missing information in UK related waters. It required sampling for and analysis of the total inorganic carbon and total alkalinity content of samples. This reports documents the procedures sued for sampling. A companion document Hartman Dumousseaud and Roberts (NOC Internal Document No. 01) describes in detail the analytical procedures used and the calculation of the results

AKTive Food: Semantic Web based knowledge conduits for the Organic Food Industry

    No full text
We present a vision and a proposal for using Semantic Web technologies in the organic food industry. This is a very knowledge intensive industry at every step from the producer, to the caterer or restauranteur, through to the consumer. There is a crucial need for a concept of environmental audit which would allow the various stake holders to know the full environmental impact of their economic choices. This is a different and parallel form of knowledge to that of price. Semantic Web technologies can be used effectively for the calculation and transfer of this type of knowledge (together with other forms of multimedia data) which could contribute considerably to the commercial and educational impact of the organic food industry. We outline how this could be achieved as our essential objective is to show how advanced technologies could be used to both reduce ecological impact and increase public awareness

Bishop, red spruce-hemlock forest, flightintercept trap, NSMC; Panuke Lake, 1-16.vii.1997, D.J. Bishop, old-growth red spruce-hemlock forest, flightintercept trap, (3), NSMC; Lunenburg Co.: Card Lake, 16-29.vii.1997, D.J. Bishop, old-growth red spruce forest, flight-intercept trap, NSMC; Queens Co.: Sixth Lake, 11.vii.2003, P. Dollin, old-growth hemlock forest, sweeping, NSMC. Newly recorded in Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces as a whole (Fig. 14). Recorded in the USA in Montana, Missouri, Maryland, and South Carolina (White 1982); in Canada known from Ontario (McNamara 1991c). Associated with woody fungi including Fistulina hepatica (Schaeff. ex Fr.), Ganoderma spp., and Elfingia spp. (Polyporaceae) (White 1982, Philips 2002). It is noteworthy that almost all specimens were collected in old-growth coniferous forests.Published as part of Majka, Christopher G., 2007, The Derodontidae, Dermestidae, Bostrichidae, and Anobiidae of the Maritime Provinces of Canada (Coleoptera: Bostrichiformia), pp. 1-38 in Zootaxa 1573 (1) on page 31, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.1573.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/509663
