    A remodeling cycle sets the size of the osteon and associated lamellae in the basic multicellular unit. Treatments and aging affect these micro-structural features. We previously demonstrated decreased fatigue life with an unexplained mechanism and decreased osteon size in cortical bone treated with high-dose bisphosphonate. Here, three finite element models were examined: type-1: a single osteon, as a homogeneous unit and with heterogeneous lamellae and interlamellae, type-2: a control, interstitial-only tissue and type-3: the osteon with cement line, set within the interstitial tissue. Models were loaded in simulated, sinusoidal bending fatigue. As osteon size was decreased, lamellar number and lamellar thickness were incrementally adjusted for each model. As hypothesized, lamellae within the larger type-1 models attained greater cycles to failure and the addition of an osteon to type-2 models (generating a type-3 model set) yielded increased fatigue life. However, as the osteon size was decreased, the potential for compressive damage nucleation was increased within the lamellae of the osteons versus the interstitium. Also, osteons with fewer, thicker lamellae displayed increased fatigue life. Osteonal microstructure plays a role in damage initiation location, especially when BMU size is smaller. Previous findings by us and others could partially be explained by this further understanding of increased probability for damage nucleation in smaller osteons.Peer reviewe

    The thesis explores the legend of Saint Christopher as presented in four fourteenth- and fifteenth-сеntury manuscripts, the oldest extant Castillan accounts. Chapter One outlines the legend's origins in fourth-century Eastern Mediterranean culture, and its trajectory as far as its appearance in Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea, commenting on the changes made to content and emphasis as the account evolved. The focus narrows in Chapter Two, where the transmission from Latin to Castillan is considered in detail, and comparisons drawn between the four vernacular accounts. Chapter Three and Four deal with thematic aspects of the legend as they appear in Spanish, including an exploration of die nature of Christopher in his dual portrayal as saint and monster, and the notions of fear, power and voice as they are depicted in the texts. The four medieval Spanish accounts are edited and presented here (three of them for the first time) in an appendix, complete with critical apparatus

Part of the University Oral History Project, Everett Cooley Collection tape numbers U-3086 and U-3092Christopher Johnson (b. 1960) was born in Kansas City, Kansas. His father was in the Air Force so he and his family moved around a lot when he was young. He went to high school and did his undergraduate in Dayton, Ohio. Christopher then earned his master´s in physics and a PhD in biophysics and computing from the University of Utah. Before working at the University of Utah, he was a professor of physics at Westminster for four years. He describes several positions he held at the University of Utah. Christopher talks about his time working at Sperry Corporation. He describes his involvement with the ACCESS program at the University of Utah.In his second interview, Christopher talks about his time as a research assistant professor, assistant professor, and then associate chairman of the department of computer sciences at the University of Utah. He describes research projects he was involved in. Christopher explains interactive scientific visualization. He talks about his time as director of the Center for Scientific Computing and Imaging.
