No full textIl Subtitle Project nasce nell’ambito del progetto ex art. 60% del Dip. di Studi Interdisciplinari su Traduzione, Lingue e Culture (SITLeC) “Plurilinguismo e traduzione di testi multimediali, telematici e letterari”.
OBIETTIVI
Il primo obiettivo del progetto è di colmare il vuoto di informazioni sul sottotitolaggio in Italia attraverso una raccolta di dati aggiornati sul settore.
In secondo luogo, il progetto si propone di impiegare i dati raccolti: sia ad un uso didattico, con la progettazione e realizzazione di corsi di formazione per sottotitolatori, sia ad un uso professionale con il tentativo di formulare un articolato modello di qualità mirato al settore in stretta collaborazione con le aziende che vi operano.
FASI DEL PROGETTO
• Raccolta di informazioni sul settore sottotitoli.
La raccolta di informazioni sarà effettuata principalmente attraverso interviste e questionari.
• Pubblicazione delle informazioni sul settore sottotitoli
Il progetto si propone di costruire un database dei dati raccolti con interfaccia web: già consultabile sul sito: www.subtitleproject.net.
• La formazione dei sottotitolatori
La formazione di futuri sottotitolatori non può prescindere da una dettagliata conoscenza del mercato, conoscenza che questo progetto si propone di costruire.
• Modello di qualità nel sottotitolaggio
L'ultima fase di questo progetto è di iniziare un processo di scambio di idee e diffusione di informazioni che possa portare alla definizione di un modello di qualità nel sottotitolaggio calibrato specificamente per il mercato italiano e articolato per riflettere le diverse realtà che questo comprende.
• Special needs subtitling
Recentemente, abbiamo anche avviato delle ricerche nell'ambito del “Special needs” subtitling e, più specificamente, il sottotitolaggio per i non udenti.
STATO DELLA RICERCA
Con il contributo importante di un gruppo di laureandi della SSLiMIT, sono state eseguite più di venti interviste in Italia. E’ stato anche condotto un’indagine analogo in Belgio in modo da avere un confronto con un paese che ha una lunga tradizione di uso/diffusione dei sottotitoli.
Sono state scritte nell’ambito del progetto più di 20 tesi di laurea (vecchio e nuovo ordinamento).
Nel A.A. 2004-05 la Dott.ssa Elena Di Giovanni ha vinto un assegno di ricerca dedicato al Subtitle Project, e il Dott. Carlo Eugeni ha vinto una borsa di dottorato in “English For Special Purposes” presso l’Università Federico II di Napoli, in collaborazione con il SITLeC, che rientrerà nell’ambito del Subtitle Project e sarà dedicato al “Special Needs Subtitling”.
• Seminari e corsi
Oltre ai seminari tenuti in maniera informale con gli studenti che partecipano al progetto, nell'anno accademico 2004-05 è stato inaugurato un modulo sul sottotitolaggio all'interno della laurea specialistica in traduzione della SSLiMIT, tenuto Prof. Rundle con la collaborazione della Dott.ssa Di Giovanni.

• Conferenze
Prof. Rundle ha presentato i primi risultati con un intervento al Convegno AIA nel settembre 2003 intitolato "The Subtitling Industry in Italy".
Dott.ssa Di Giovanni ha presentato il progetto al convegno internazionale "International Conference on Audiovisual Translation: Media for All", tenutosi a Barcellona 6-8 giugno 2005 (Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona e TRANSMEDIA Research Group) con un intervento intitolato: "Bridging Practice and Research: the Subtitle Project"

Translation in Fascist Systems: Italy, Germany, Spain A Colloquium
No full textThe one-day conference was planned as a forum for the analysis and comparison of translation publishing policies and practices in the fascist eras in Germany, Italy and Spain. The aim was to contribute to the historical study of fascism; to contribute to descriptive Translation Studies by providing concrete and detailed accounts of translation policy and practice in a very particular historical context; and to engage in interdisciplinary discussion between historically oriented Translation Studies and culturally oriented historical studies.
Around thirty to forty people attended the colloquium over the course of the day, around twenty of them participating in the afternoon round table. The day was divided into empirical presentations in the morning and interdisciplinary discussion in the afternoon.
The morning presentations outlined the institutional context and publishing practice of the respective regimes, as follows:
- Chris Rundle (University of Bologna) on translation in Fascist Italy
- Kate Sturge (Aston University, UK) on translation in Nazi Germany
- Jeroen Vandaele (KU Leuven, Belgium) on translation in Franco's Spain
- Rafael Lozano Miralles (University of Bologna) on the literary relations of Spain and Italy in the Fascist regime
The afternoon was introduced by Professor Patrizia Dogliani (University of Bologna), who set out the parallels and divergences she saw arising from the three country studies. She put forward a comparative perspective and opened up a range of questions which were then taken up by the presenters and members of the audience. A wide range of issues were discussed and there was strong participation from the audience, including a scholar from Portugal who provided a useful complement to the Spanish case

If there is one point on which Rosa Maria Bollettieri Bosinelli’s intellectual focus has never wavered nor waned, that would be James Joyce—the person, his works, the institution. This volume, this “joyceful” for Cicci, attests to that enduring regard. The reach of Rosa Maria’s attention to Joyce, however, has always been broad and welcoming of many different approaches, and if there is something unique about this volume, it is perhaps the range of perspectives that can be found here. Not only are there contributions from well-known Joyceans who have been working in the field of Joyce studies for years, but also contributions from scholars working in fields contiguous to Joyce as well as from those in apparently distant disciplines—such as Corpus Linguistics and Pragmatics. It is a gathering that reflects, of course, Rosa Maria Bollettieri Bosinelli herself, who has done so much to bring such disparate interests to bear on and attend to Joyce

This volume comprises contributions on a wide variety of subjects in the fields of literature,language studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and translation studies, interspersed with works of fiction and poetry. Minding the Gap was chosen as a title since the idea of exchange, which perhaps is the general concept which best takes in all of Rosa Maria Bollettieri Bosinelli’s concerns, is made possible precisely by a gap, which is that space that does indeed need minding since while it is the space that makes communication and translation possible, it is likewise the space that makes possible the miscommunications, mistranslations, and misunderstandings—the “miss-takes”—of life’s negotiations. The contributions in this volume represent numerous “takes” on how various gaps are minded, negotiated, and/or missed—all “takes” contributed in honour of one who truly understands what is at stake in minding the gap
The subtitle project: A vocational education initiative
No full textThis article discusses the pedagogical relevance of a research project into professional subtitling practices in Italy which is coordinated by the author at the University of Bologna. The key feature of this initiative relates to its collaborative dynamics: research is carried out by students writing their final dissertations, working together as a team and pooling their resources and findings. The author contends that taking part in this collective enquiry-based experience is as important for the students as the actual results of their investigation and discusses in detail the pedagogical benefits of this approach. The article begins by describing the inception stages of the project, conceived as an attempt to capitalize on the traditionally high weighting of the final dissertation within Italian degree programmes - and hence on the important amount of effort that students are likely to put into it. After describing the pedagogical and research tools used in the project, the paper goes on to present the results achieved in the first 2-3 years of the project's life; illustrate how the students' work has influenced the author's teaching practices as a subtitler trainer; and evaluate the implications of this experience for translator training in general. © St. Jerome Publishing, Manchester

Irish-Medium Education: Attitudes and Opinions
No full textFor many years, the Irish language was considered to be low in status and was associated with poverty, backwardness and ignorance (O’Reilly 78-79). With the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, however, its status was raised and the promotion of its revival and maintenance carried out through a series of policies and actions to foster the preservation of the language in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking district) and language revival in the rest of Ireland. The events which led to the present fragile status quo were determined, in part, by the utilitarian purposes which the acquisition of English had attained over the centuries, leading to a steady abandonment of Irish in favour of the dominant language (Wall; Ó Riagáin; Hindley; Ó Huallacháin).
For the purposes of this paper I will discuss the results of a number of interviews carried out in three Irish speaking communities in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland by focussing on the informants’ attitudes on Irish-medium education. The following sections will provide a brief history of the Irish language, an overview of the methodology used to collect data, and a discussion of excerpts from the interviews
