Learning to Speak Softly: The Autobiography of Roberta Cowell

    No full text
The presentation uses the autobiography of motor racing driver Robert Cowell who became one of the first high profile cases of transgender identity in British sport history: hence its the title Roberta Cowell, Her Story by Herself. The book has a preface written by Canon Millbourn and was published by Heinemann in Melbourne, London and Toronto in 1954. The preface suggests that the author spoke quietly in this book and because of that deserves sober reading and sympathetic understanding. It begins ‘It is a strange story I have to tell; too fantastic to be fiction...’ It remains unclear whether Roberta Cowell is alive and what happened to her after the mid 1970s and early 1980s

The present thesis is a research of his new musical resources and new avenues of musical expression of Piano works of Henry Cowell, as pianist and composer, who influenced today's piano music and contributed to the development of American music. He was one of the most active and prominent figures in the history of twentieth-century music. As composer, perfomer, author and pedagogue, he was in his time "associated with almost every development in American music." Approximately 700 compositions are attributed to him including symponies, choral works, piano solos, vocal solos and a variety of chamber works. For this vast contribution to contemporary music Cowell has been called "the most important link between Ives and the latter-day avant-garde, and one of the most prolific innovators of American music immediately following World War 1. During the decade of the roaring twenties, many American composers explored new compositional techniques in an effort to develop an authentic national style independent of their European counterparts. Cowell was at the vanguard of this group of radical composers. In the music that Cowell produced as part of this movement, he foreshadowed and realized music that has become part of the expressive vocabulary of today's young composer. Although Cowell's achievements encompass many areas of music, he is remembered mostly for his experimental piano works. As an accomplished pianist, Cdwell explored the sound capabilbties of the piano through innovative keyboard techniques and through direct manipulation of the piano strings. The sounds and techniques he created in the early 1920s have permanently affected the piano repertoire of this century. For the research study of new compositional techniques of Henry Cowell, I referred to the flow of 1920s American music that was Cowell's composition background and see to new sounds and performance techniques, along with a research analysis of major works. Includes bibliographical references and index. The Arapaho Language is the definitive reference grammar of an endangered Algonquian language. Arapaho differs strikingly from other Algonquian languages, making it particularly relevant to the study of historical linguistics and the evolution of grammar. Andrew Cowell and Alonzo Moss Sr. document Arapaho's interesting features, including a pitch-based accent system with no exact Algonquian parallels, radical innovations in the verb system, and complex contrasts between affirmative and non-affirmative statements. Cowell and Moss detail strategies used by speakers of this highly polysynthetic.1. The Arapaho People and the Social Contexts of the Arapaho Language -- 2. The Aims and Purposes of this Grammar -- 3. The X Factor Enigma: Simon Cowell and the Marketization of Existential Liminality

    No full text
In this paper we take a cultural perspective to understand the success of Simon Cowell’s X Factor TV talent show and its various brand extensions which, we suggest, epitomise the new marketing priorities of the media convergence era. We seek insights not from formal theories of marketing management but in the myth and magic of Cowell’s enchanted TV presence as the mystical authority, the trickster figure, conducting a mass-mediated experience of Turner’s (1969) ‘existential liminality’. Detached from formal rites of passage, this simulation of liminal ritual temporarily, and symbolically, subverts formal social barriers and opens up the possibility of transformed identity for the contestants. We suggest that X Factor viewers partake both vicariously and actually in this marketized experience of existential liminality. We review literary as well as anthropological antecedents to the media role Cowell personifies and we critique and we extend previous applications of Turner’s work in marketing and consumption to suggest a wider resonance beyond the exemplar of X Factor in a range of ordinary, as well as extraordinary, consumption phenomena

A Multi-Agent Model of Tax Evasion with Public Expenditure

    No full text
We develop a model where heterogeneous agents maximize their individual utility based on (after tax) income and on the level of public expenditure (as in Cowell, Gordon, 1988). Agents are different in risk aversion and in the relative preference for public expenditure with respect to personal income. In each period, an agent can optimally conceal some income based on conjectures on the perceived probability of being subject to audits, the perceived level of public expenditure and the perceived amount of tax paid by other individuals. As far as the agent-based model is concerned, we assume that the Government sets the tax rate and the penalties, uses all the revenue to finance public expenditure (with no inefficiency) and fights evasion by controlling a (random) fraction of agents. We show that, through computational experiments based on micro-simulations, stable configurations of tax rates and public expenditure endogenously form in this case as well. In such equilibrium-like situations we find: • a positive relationship between the tax rate and evasion still arises. • tax compliance mainly depends on the distribution of personal features like risk-aversion and the degree of preference for public expenditure. • an endogenous level of tax evasion that is almost not affected by reasonable rates of control. A proper choice of the tax rate results instead in voluntary partial compliance. • the enforcement of higher compliance rates requires unrealistic and costly large-scale audits.Tax evasion, public expenditure, agent-based models
