This collection contains correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, newsclippings, printed materials, photographs, maps, and memorabilia collected by Clarence Evans on Friedrich Gerstacker materials. Born in Atkins, Arkansas, August 20, 1899, William Clarence Evans developed an interest in German author Friedrich Gerstacker while studying with German scholar Alfred Lussky, at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
After receiving a Masters in History from UA Fayetteville, Evans married VeLena Scott in 1930, and they had two children, Carolyn Evans LaFevers and Margaret Evans Wright. Evans taught at Atkins 1925-26 and served as principal of Casa High School in 1930-1931 before accepting a position at Beebe Jr. College in 1932. During his tenure at Beebe, Evans received the Dupont Senior Fellowship from the University of Virginia and worked on his doctorate during 1933-1935. Evans left Beebe Jr. College in 1942 to accept a position as instructor at UA Fayetteville. In 1944-1945, Evans worked for the War Department in Washington D. C. and was able to spend two years researching Gerstacker's work at the Library of Congress. After World War II, Evans accepted a position as assistant Professor of History at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Evans was recognized by the Arkansas Historical Association for his research in the social history of the Arkansas frontier and was best known for his research and published articles on Gerstacker. Friedrich Gerstacker (1816-1872), a 19th century German essayist and traveler, first came to Arkansas in 1838 at the age of 21 and returned to Germany in 1844. Gerstaeker's writings of his travels in Arkansas and around the world formed the basis for several volumes of novels and short stories. In 1957, Evans was honored by the "Gerstacker Society" in Braunschweig during official observance of the 85th anniversary of Gerstacker's death. During Evans' trip to Germany he became good friends with Margarethe Gerstacker, Friedrich's daughter, and collected original materials on Gerstacker from her. That same year, Governor Orval Faubus commissioned Evans as an Arkansas Traveler and also bestowed honorary citizenship to Gerstacker. Evans retired for Northeastern State College in 1965 after 19 years, to continue research on Gerstacker's writings. Clarence Evans died August 10, 1988.

Hybrid continuum-discrete simulation of granular impact dynamics
Granular impact -- the dynamic intrusion of solid objects into granular media
-- is widespread across scientific and engineering applications including
geotechnics. Existing approaches for simulating granular impact dynamics have
relied on either a pure discrete method or a pure continuum method. Neither of
these methods, however, is deemed optimal from the computational perspective.
Here, we introduce a hybrid continuum-discrete approach, built on the coupled
material-point and discrete-element method (MP-DEM), for simulating granular
impact dynamics with unparalleled efficiency. To accommodate highly complex
solid-granular interactions, we enhance the existing MP-DEM formulation with
three new ingredients: (i) a robust contact algorithm that couples the
continuum and discrete parts without any interpenetration under extreme impact
loads, (ii) large deformation kinematics employing multiplicative
elastoplasticity, and (iii) a trans-phase constitutive relation capturing
gasification of granular media. For validation, we also generate experimental
data through laboratory measurement of the impact dynamics of solid spheres
dropped onto dry sand. Simulation of the experiments shows that the proposed
approach can well reproduce granular impact dynamics in terms of impact forces,
intrusion depths, and splash patterns. Further, through parameter studies on
material properties, model formulations, and numerical schemes, we identify key
factors for successful continuum-discrete simulation of granular impact
dynamics
Views on Black Literature: An Interview with Clarence Major
Poet-Novelist Clarence Major, who was writer-in-residence with the English Department during the 1975-76 academic year, was interviewed recently by E. Ethelbert Miller, director of the Afro-American Resource Center at Howard University and co-ed itor of Synergy: An Anthology of Washington, D. C. Black Poetry. Author of several literary works, Major\u27s latest book is Reflex And Bone Structure. His other books include, All Night Visitors (1969), The Dictionary of Afro-American Slang (1970), Private Line (1971), The Cotton Club (1972), and Siaveship and Relationship (1973). In the following interview, Major discusses his writing, other Black experimental writers in America, and the problems of Black literature. Ed
'Pilings of Thought Under Spoken': The Poetry of Susan Howe, 1974-1993.
PhDThis thesis discusses the poetry published by contemporary American poet Susan
Howe over a period of almost two decades. The dissertation is chiefly concerned with
articulating the relationship between poetic form, history, and authority in this body
of' work. Howe's poetry dredges the past for the linguistic effects of patriarchy,
colonialism and war. My reading of the work is an exploration of the ways in which a
disjunctive poetics can address such historical trauma. The poems, rather than
attempting to reinstate voices lifted from what Howe has called "the dark side of
history", are a means of reflecting the resistance that the past offers to contemporary
investigation. It is the effacement, and not the recovery, of history's victims, that is
discernible in the contours of these highly opaque texts. Notions of authority are most
often addressed in the poetry through the figure of paternal absence, which has a
threefold function in the work, serving to represent social authority, an aporetic
conception of divinity and an autobiographical narrative. Alongside the antiauthoritarian
currents in the writing - critiques, for example, of the doctrine of
Manifest Destiny or of scapegoating versions of femininity - my thesis stresses Howe's
engagement with negative theology and with a strain of American Protestant
enthusiasm that has its roots in 17th century New England. The dissertation explores
the dissonance caused by the co-existence in the poetry of elements of political dissent
and religious mysticism. Finally, I consider Howe's engagement with literary history
and authors such as Shakespeare, Swift, Thoreau and Melville. The manner in which
Howe deploys the words of others in her work, I argue, allows for a mixture of textual
polyphony and a more conventional notion of authorial 'voice'
[[alternative]]A Study on the Resident Physicians' Expectation of e-Hospital Medical Information System of National Taiwan University Medical Center
[[abstract]]The concepts and activities of e-commerce, whether in practice or as an area of academic concern, are still at the early stage of development at every hospital in Taiwan. There were many studies about business to business (B2B) model and business to customer (B2C) model of e-commerce, but only a few studies about business to employee (B2E) model.
The two purposes of this study were to investigate resident physicians’ satisfaction of using the functions and service content items provided by Intranet, and their expectation of necessity of the e-Hospital medical information B2E model system at National Taiwan University Medical Center (NTUMC). From analysis of the 319 copies (total return rate: 64.97%) of questionnaires, three major results and findings were summarized as follows:
1.Resident physicians at NTUMC were not satisfied with the functions and service content items provided by Intranet. Even by means of the five-category investigation, the degree of their satisfaction was still low. The results indicated that NTUMC had to make great efforts to provide them with better functions and service content items related to medical information.
2.Resident physicians at NTUMC agreed to build the e-Hospital medical information system providing them with support services of medical training, medical treatment and medical study. Through a five-category questionnaire survey of e-Hospital B2E model system, they felt that NTUMC needed to build the best e-Hospital medical information system and answer their requests.
3.The priority of the five categories of which resident physicians felt the degree of importance was: (1) medical out patients department (OPD) and ward admission service, (2) medical information service, (3) medical research and development service, (4) medical continuing education service, and (5) medical administration and management service.
Flow-type landslides Impacting V-shaped Diversions: Physical Modelling
In rural and sparsely populated areas, government issued pamphlets often recommend the construction of V-shaped diversions to protect personal property from flow-type landslides hazards, including debris flows. V-shaped diversions are advantageous because they attract low impact forces and runup heights due to their oblique impact angle. However, current design approaches are empirical, so it is unclear what resisting forces and wall heights are required. In this extended abstract, details of a new experimental setup and some preliminary results are presented. It is envisioned that findings from this study will help to shed light on scientific-based recommendations to design V-shaped diversions to enhance the resiliency of mountain communities globally
Effects of interactions between transient granular flows and macroscopically rough beds and their implications for bulk flow dynamics
Steep-creek beds are macroscopically rough. This roughness causes channelised flow material to decelerate and dissipate energy, which are accounted for by depth-averaged mobility models (DMM). However, practical DMM implementations do not explicitly account for grain-scale basal interactions which influence macroscopic flow dynamics. In this study, we model flows using physical tests with smooth and macroscopically rough bases, and hence evaluate Discrete Element Method (DEM) and DMM models. A scaling effect is identified relating to roughened beds: increasing the number of grains per unit depth tends to suppress dispersion, such that small-scale flows on smooth beds resemble large-scale flows on roughened beds, at least in terms of bulk density. Furthermore, the DEM shows that rougher beds reduce the peak bulk density by up to 15% compared to a smooth bed. Rough beds increase the vertical momentum transfer tenfold, compared to smooth ones. The DMM cannot account for density change or vertical momentum, so DMM flow depths are underestimated by 90% at the flow front and 20% in the body. The Voellmy model implicitly captures internal energy dissipation for flows on rough beds. The parameter ξ can allow velocity reductions due to rough beds observed in the DEM to be captured. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Impact Dynamics of Flow-type Landslides on V-shaped Diversions: Combined Numerical and Experimental Approach
In sparsely populated and rural areas, government agencies propose the installation of V-shaped diversions to mitigate flow-type landslides. In contrast to rigid barriers, diversions are small, easy-to-construct, and cost-effective. Nonetheless, the impact dynamics of flow-type landslides against diversion structures remains unclear and hinders the development of scientific-based design guidelines. Diversion angles that are too large decelerates the flow and causes an overspill. In contrast, diversion angles that are too small results in long walls that are not feasible to construct. In this study, laboratory-scale flume experiments modelling the impact of dry sand against diversions are conducted. The diversion angles are changed from 15 to 60 degrees. The experimental data is used to calibrate a coupled Material Point Method (MPM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) numerical model to back-analyze the experimental data. The numerical model is used to conduct a parametric study to investigate the effects of post-impact flow Froude numbers. It is proposed to design V-shaped diversions based on bow and oblique shock mechanisms. Design charts that consider the competing effects between deflected and accumulated debris are proposed. The newly proposed analytical model for predicting the deflection height to mitigate overspill shows close agreement with experimental results. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Numerical investigation of the mechanism of granular flow impact on rigid control structures
Published: 24 February 2021Baffles and check-dam systems are often used as granular flow (rock avalanches, debris flows, etc.) control structures in regions prone to dangerous geological hazards leading to massive landslides. This paper explores the use of numerical modelling to simulate large volume granular flow and the effect of the presence of baffles and check dam systems on granular flow. In particular, the paper offers a solution based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics numerical method, combined with a modified Bingham model with Mohr–Coulomb yield stress for granular flows. This method is parallelised at a large scale to perform high-resolution simulations of sand flowing down an inclined flume, obstructed by rigid control structures. We found that to maximise the flow deceleration ability of baffle arrays, the design of baffle height ought to reach a minimum critical value, which can be quantified from the flow depth without baffles (e.g. 2.7 times for frictional flows with friction angle of 27.5°). Also, the check-dam system was found to minimise run-out distances more effectively but experiences substantially higher forces compared to baffles. Finally, flow-control structures that resulted in lower run-out distances were associated with lower total energy dissipation, but faster kinetic energy dissipation in the granular flows; as well as lower downstream peak flow rates.Edward Yang, Ha H.
