The relationship between civic attitudes and voting intention : an analysis of vocational upper secondary schools in England and Singapore

    No full text
From 2009 to 2011, a team from the Centre for Learning and Life Chances in Knowledge Economies and Societies carried out a mixedmethods study of young people in England and Singapore. With regard to civic attitudes, the study showed that there was a greater sense of political self-efficacy and collective (school) efficacy in Singapore than in England. In addition, the group in Singapore scored higher on future voting relative to the group in England. Further, while both political self-efficacy and collective (school) efficacy were correlated with future voting in England, only the latter was correlated in the case of Singapore. For some, the results may seem counter-intuitive. The article reflects on these results, particularly those relating to democratic outcomes

Asymmetric distributions of grown-in microdefects in Czochralski silicon

    No full text
The axial temperature gradient in the CZ-Si melt near the crystal-melt interface was increased by controlling the crucible and crystal rotation rate. For the crystal grown under the increased temperature gradient in the melt with a very low crucible rotation rate, asymmetric distributions of grown-in microdefects were formed. This result has never been reported, and cannot be explained simply by any theory such as Voronkov's theory. In addition, it is shown that the shape of the crystal-melt interface is not the parameter determining the dominant type of point defects. Therefore, a new aspect of the formation behavior of point defects is discussed in terms of asymmetry of the melt temperature distributions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Low-Power Small-Area Inverter-Based DSM for MEMS Microphone

    No full text
A delta-sigma modulator (DSM) is proposed for the direct connection to micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphone. To reduce power, both the DAC reference voltage (VREF) and the DSM supply voltage (VDD) are reduced to 700 mV by limiting the maximum linear acoustic input range to 110 dB SPL (sound pressure level). For the low VDD operation, the switched capacitor (SC) integrators of DSM employ CMOS inverters as amplifiers. A unity-gain buffer compensates the pole error of the SC integrator; it reduces chip area by replacing the auto-zero capacitor of conventional inverter-based SC integrator. Compared to the conventional integrator, the integrator of this brief reduces the pole error from 0.3x0025; to 0.06x0025;, reduces the chip area and the power by 32.4x0025; and 24.8x0025;, respectively. The 3(rd) order DSM in a 65 nm CMOS process was measured to have Walden-figure of merit (FoMw) 89.3fJ/step, dynamic range (DR) 90.1 dB, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) 87.2 dB, signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) 86.4 dB, and power 122 uW at 10 MHz clock frequency (Fs).11Nsciescopu

IN-CONSUMPTION INFORMATION CUES AND ONLINE VIDEO CONSUMPTION

    No full text
Online video platforms such as YouTube feature visual cues on progress bars to spotlight standout segments of videos. These cues, designed to steer users toward intriguing content moments, raise questions about their overarching impact on video consumption patterns. In this study, we delve into in- consumption information cues (ICICs), indicators that depict fluctuating video quality in real time. Drawing from a natural experiment on a live streaming platform, we evaluate the effects of engagement graphs. These are visual timelines that emphasize moments favored by prior viewers in video-on-demand (VOD) content, which represent full replays of live stream sessions. Notably, these graphs are only accessible to iOS users, leaving Android users without access. Our results show that ICICs enhance the viewership of VODs and live streams. Moreover, viewers tend to spend more time immersed in live broadcasts, suggesting heightened content appeal. Yet, these engagement graphs do not prompt users to donate more virtual gifts, a vital income stream for streamers. Even with the introduction of ICICs, while there is a rise in video production, the inherent structure of live streams remained largely unchanged. We conclude by discussing the academic and managerial implications of these findings.
