    Direct numerical simulation of two-phase stratified flows in the primary coolant of a nuclear reactor

    Multiphase flows are very common in many Nuclear engineering applications. During high pressurized conditions there are possibilities of high thermal loads on the pressure vessel, leading to pipe ruptures. As part of breakdown measures, the emergency core cooling system is activated and the coolant is mixed with the fluid in the cold leg, giving rise to multiphase turbulent flow. These regimes can comprise of large scale interfaces, leading to stratified flows. These postulated accidents or events need to be identified and understood to improve nuclear reactor safety. Computational fluid dynamics can serve as an excellent tool to model these scenarios, contributes towards reactor safety. Coarse models which are widely used in industries such as RANS are known to over-predict turbulent producing unphysical gradients. Thus the turbulent mass and momentum are not yet fully understood. Using high resolution tools such as Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), can potentially avoid these over-prediction and could model these large scale interfaces accurately. As a long term goal, the data sets generated from these simulations can be used to train such coarse models or simply support for validation. Placing the focus on a configuration where two fluids are in a stratified scenario, this graduation thesis will show a systematic approach towards the development and modelling of air and water moving in both co-current and counter-current direction, wherein simulations are performed in RK-Basilisk. Primarily, the work starts with studying a single phase turbulent channel flow to forma basis of understanding of concepts and code. The model of (Liu et al. 2009), who use realistic properties of air-water is chosen to be implemented in RK-Basilisk. It is realized that, implementing this is in RK-Basilisk is not straightforward and thus the constraints are identified and a general mathematical framework is developed to resolve this. One of the main objectives in this thesis is to model and understand the turbulent behavior near the interface of both air and water. To do so, the physical mechanisms which govern the generation and decay of turbulence called the TKE Budgets is studied by modelling the individual terms that complete it. The budgets are modelled and validated against (Liu et al. 2009). Interesting conclusions are drawn which depict the trends of budget terms and the kinetic energy, giving a good picture of the underlying interfacial turbulent mechanisms. The same mathematical framework, along with some additional modelling lead to an extension of this study to counter-current flows, wherein another set ofconclusions are drawn.Applied Mathematics | COSSE (Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering

    Abstract: Universities are expected to contribute the economic growth of the country by preparing the graduates with necessary academic skills. Students are focusing more on knowledge or the course contents but put less effort on the skill that are inventible for them to master in their chosen field. This study is focusing on the perception of accounting graduates of UTAS about employability skill that they should possess. The study found that the students feel Learning and Development skills are not necessary for employability irrespective of gender or the year of study. Learning and Development skills include working in teams, able to adapt technology, communication skills, lifelong learning and problem solving skills. When subject knowledge is compared with the year of study, the authors found that the students did not give importance to subject knowledge as well. However, Life/Career skills are considered to be valuable skills by the students whether it is compared with gender or year of study. The authors recommend that the students must be educated on the importance of Learning and development skills and subject knowledge, which will help them in securing a good job in the future.     Renovating Houses in The Netherlands to nearly Zero Energy standard- Important drivers of economic feasibility

    The European Union through its Roadmap 2050 has mandated nearly zero energy as the standard for all building stock. While newly built buildings will be of nearly zero energy standard by 31 December 2020 (public-owned buildings after 31 December 2018), new buildings form only 1% of the addition to the existing building stock which implies that to attain nearly zero energy standard for all building stock, large-scale renovations must be performed. However, the renovation to the nearly zero energy standard is not yet cost optimal. To improve the economic feasibility, it is important to find the parameters that have an impact on the cost-optimality of nearly zero energy renovations and the extent of their impact, the results of which can be used to drive the renovation to the nearly zero energy standard in an economically feasible manner. The primary objective of this thesis is the identification of the most important drivers of the economic feasibility of renovating houses in The Netherlands to nearly zero energy standard. The parameters were deduced from a framework available in the literature. The extent of influence was determined by performing partial sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo analysis. Five key parameters had an impact on the NPV- energy price, energy consumption (presented as four separate sub-parameters: electricity and gas consumption both before and after renovation), renovation cost, project life cycle and discount rate. In absolute terms, gas consumption before renovation had the highest impact followed by, renovation cost, electricity consumption after renovation, discount rate, a shift of energy price to the low price scenario, life cycle of the project and electricity consumption before renovation. The gas consumption after renovation and the shift of energy price to the high prices scenario did not have a significant effect on the NPV. The most important drivers of economic feasibility of nearly zero energy renovations are reduction in the renovation cost, discounting the benefits at a lower (social) discount rate until the end of the service life of the house, increasing the retail price of natural gas, decreasing the retail price of electricity and regulation of user behavior in reducing rebound effect (the reduction in the expected energy savings primarily due to occupant’s behavior such as requirement of further comfort). Based on the obtained results, policy recommendations were provided to the Government. Suggestions for further studies include listing all parameters and determining their effect on the NPV, identifying the complete list of indirect benefits that accrue to the citizens of The Netherlands and their valuation using contingent valuation techniques, and performing a cost benefit analysis at the macroeconomic level which will not only consider wider benefits such as infrastructure savings, but also reflect the true value of indirect benefits through reduced externalities and improvement in the productivity of the people on the economy.Electrical Engineering | Sustainable Energy Technolog

    A novel approach to MP-PIC: Continuum particle model for dense particle flows in fluidized beds

    A novel approach to Multiphase-Particle-in-Cell (MP-PIC), called Continuum Particle Model (CPM), is developed for dense gas-particle flows. CPM has high computational speed, comparable to that of MP-PIC, but a robustness and accuracy closer to that of a Discrete Element Model (DEM). The gas phase is treated as a continuum phase and particles are tracked discretely, but particle collisions are modelled by considering the divergence of the continuum particle stress tensor. Details on efficient solution to the model are presented. For comparison, a parametric study is performed for quasi-2D fluidized beds. Comparison of CFD-CPM is made with MP-PIC and CFD-DEM. The particle stress models by Harris and Crighton, and by Srivastava and Sundaresan are tested in our CFD-CPM. Results from CFD-CPM based on the Srivastava and Sundaresan particle stress model show good agreement with CFD-DEM results.     Modelling the installation of offshore wind farms: Defining the installation of offshore wind submarine power cables using a discrete event simulation based logistics model

    A gap in the understanding of offshore wind submarine power cables is responsible for 70-80 % of failures in recent times. The failures originate from the phases of design, manufacturing, installation and operations. Joint industry collaborations such as the Cable Lifetime Monitoring project that form the background for this thesis, are aimed at developing knowledge of these failures. The origination of failures from the installation phase of power cables is of particular interest. In order to do so, a model has to be developed first to understand the processes involved in an installation plan, as well as their time and resource costs. Logistics and planning tools such as ECN Install are utilized for this purpose and provide the medium for capturing the installation processes for submarine power cables. This thesis aims to describe the installation of power cables using a discrete event simulation based logistics model such as ECN Install. The first part of the thesis focuses on a literature review to categorize all aspects of power cable installation. Here the stages of a project, the installation processes, assets, methods and influencing weather parameters are identified. From this literature review it is found that the most important stage of a power cable installation project is the Marine Installation Program. The decisions leading to the development of a Marine Installation plan are mapped for modelling. The second part of the thesis deals with applying the knowledge acquired into the logistics model. Here, the model assumptions are set in order to create an accurate depiction of the installation processes. The third part of the thesis investigates the influence of input uncertainties on the model as a means to understand the relationship between the different aspects of a power cable installation project to its Marine Installation Program. A sensitivity study is performed to quantify the impact of different uncertainties on a Marine Installation Program. The final part of the thesis has theanalysis of a historical case study.     Promoting child health and nutrition in India

    Inadequate advice to mothers in poor rural communities about breast milk supplements could allow progressive erosion of breast-feeding practices in the face of aggressive promotion from baby food manufacturers. Health workers need better information about possible supplements produced from locally available foods if nutrition education programmes are to succeed. The author warns of the detrimental effect on nutritional status of the deemphasis of school/health nutrition programmes in India, and points to the need for a nutrition component as an integral part of rural employment/development programmes
