Thracophilus pachypus Verhoeff, 1934 Published records: “Umgebung von Jerusalem” [near Jerusalem] (Verhoeff 1934); “Jerusalem, Garage Montefiore” (Zapparoli 1995). New records: none. Distribution in Israel: two records from Jerusalem and surroundings (Figure 4 A). Global distribution: the species is known only from Israel. Taxonomic and nomenclatural notes. Clinopodes verhoeffi Bonato, Iorio & Minelli, 2011 Published records: “Kirjat Anawim” [Qiryat Anavim] (Verhoeff 1934, sub Geophilus flavidus porosus). New records: none. Distribution in Israel: known only from a single locality in the Jerusalem mountains (Figure 4 A). Global distribution: outside Israel, published records are from the Carpathians and Anatolia but require confirmation. Taxonomic and nomenclatural notes. Originally described as a subspecies of Geophilus flavidus, it has long been a taxon of uncertain status and identity. Stigmatogaster gracilis Meinert 1870
Stigmatogaster cf. gracilis (Meinert, 1870) Published records: none. New records: Ein Tamar (1 specimen 1963); Ezuz (1 specimen 2011). Distribution in Israel: both localities are extremely arid, with rocky substrates, average annual temperatures between 20–24 ˚C and annual precipitations between 50–100 mm (Figure 4 B). Global distribution: S. gracilis is known above all from the western and central part of the Mediterranean region. Taxonomic and nomenclatural notes. The specimens examined agree with the well known species S. gracilis in all diagnostic characters. Early patterning and blastodermal fate map of the head in the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus
The process of head development in insects utilizes a set of widely conserved genes, but this process and its evolution are not well understood. Recent data from Tribolium castaneum have provided a baseline for an understanding of insect head development. However, work on a wider range of insect species, including members of the hemimetabolous orders, is needed in order to draw general conclusions about the evolution of head differentiation and regionalization. We have cloned and studied the expression and function of a number of candidate genes for head development in the hemipteran Oncopeltus fasciatus. These include orthodenticle, empty spiracles, collier, cap 'n' collar, and crocodile. The expression patterns of these genes show a broad conservation relative to Tribolium, as well as differences from Drosophila indicating that Tribolium + Oncopeltus represent a more ancestral pattern. In addition, our data provide a blastodermal fate map for different head regions in later developmental stages and supply us with a "roadmap" for future studies on head development in this species
