Increased flow resistance and decreased flow rate in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: The role of autonomic nervous modulation
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the flow resistance and flow rate in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the surgical intensive care unit and their relation with autonomic nervous modulation. ;Methods: Postoperative patients of lung or esophageal cancer surgery without ARDS were included as the control group (n = 11). Patients who developed ARDS after lung or esophageal cancer surgery were included as the ARDS group (n = 21). The ARDS patients were further divided into survivor and nonsurvivor subgroups according to their outcomes. All patients required intubation and mechanical ventilation. ;Results: The flow rate was significantly decreased, while the flow resistance was significantly increased, in ARDS patierits. The flow rate correlated significantly and negatively with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), while the flow resistance correlated significantly and positively with PEEP in ARDS patients. Furthermore, the flow rate correlated significantly and negatively with the tidal volume-corrected normalized high frequency power but correlated significantly and positively with the tidal volume-corrected low-/high-frequency power ratio. In contrast, the flow resistance correlated significantly and negatively with normalized very low-frequency power and tidal volume-corrected low-/high-frequency power ratio, but correlated significantly and positively with tidal volume-corrected normalized high-frequency power. ;Conclusion: The flow rate is decreased and the flow resistance increased in patients with ARDS. PEEP is one of the causes of increased flow resistance and decreased flow rate in patients with ARDS. Another cause of decreased flow rate and increased flow resistance in ARDS patients is the increased vagal activity and decreased sympathetic activity. The monitoring of flow rate and flow resistance during mechanical ventilation might be useful for the proper management of ARDS patients. chinese orthographic priming in lexical decision and naming jei
chinese orthographic priming in lexical decision & naming. jei-tun wu. hsin-chin chen. national taiwan university. running heads: relative frequency on orthographic priming. acknowledgement: the research reported in this article wasAccompanied with the reliable facilitation effect of semantic (instead of homophonic)priming on character recognition and naming found in previous research, it was also observed that priming with orthographically similar characters inhibits recognition and naming of targets. The first two experiments manipulated prime chatacter frequency, orthographic similarity, and SOA(stimulus onset asynchrony) in lexical decision and naming tasks. In the lexical decision task, the target characters whick were responded by an unmasked, orthographically similar prime of higher frequency were responded to slower than their dissimilar pair controls with SOAs of 50ms and 500 ms. A similar inhibition effect was also observes in the naming task. When the SOA duration was extended to 1000 ms in Wxperiment 2, a significant inhibition effect was observed not only under conditions with primes of higher frequency but also with primes of lower freqeuncy. In Experiment s, pseudo-character primes were included. It was found that pseudo-character primes obtained no effect upon target recognition while manifesting a small inhibition effect on target naming under the prime exposure duration of 500 ms. In Experiment 4, an additional prime condition of free radicals in isolation was included. It was found in Experiment 4 that with the SOA of 50 ms or 500 ms, the embedded right component radical in isolation facilitated the recognition of the target character embedding it, while not exerting any effect on character naming
The impact of Crude Oil price index to Taiwan stock Exchange
The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether oil prices have an asymmetric impact on the stock market. First,we use semi-structured self SVAR (semi-structural var) model to identify endogenous structural crude oil supply shock, oil demand and speculative demand shocks. Then we separate each shocks into increase and decrease parts to discuss whether the shocks of oil prices changes will cause asymmetric influence on the stock market. It means that there is significant influence on stock price as oil prices rise and no significant influence as oil prices fall. Otherwise, there is no significant influence on stock price as oil prices rise and significant influence as oil prices fall
Taiwan’s democratic progressive party and its mainland china policy
Taiwan has successfully changed its political system from dictatorship into a democracy since the end of 1980s. Some people do not like 'Taiwan's democracy' -some candidates get elected by bribery in election, parliamentary fighting., but the majority of the Taiwanese people really enjoy their freedom in their homeland. They do know, at least, they have the right to oppose the government, no one would be shot by the national military force in a demonstration. The political systems are totally different between Taiwan and Mainland China, one is democracy, another is communism. Even the majority of the Taiwanese people are Chinese in ethnic origin, but their life experience are different over the past 50 years, it is difficult for any side to persuade the other side which one is better. Some Chinese Taiwanese people believe that they can have a better life, if their homeland—Taiwan can be really independent in the international community. Taiwan’s political opposition built Taiwan's first opposition party— Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) 13 years ago, and with the dream of establishing a new independent country on Taiwan. The establishment of the DPP is the result of the political opposition movement in Taiwan. Most of the members of the DPP have a strong Taiwanese identity, which is very different from the ruling KMT in Taiwan and the ruling CCP in China. The DPP gains more influence in Taiwan, the uncertainty across the Taiwan Straits increase at the same time. The DPP waited and saw between being the ruling party and establishing an independent country on Taiwan, finally it chose to complete the political aim of replacing the position of the KMT at present. The purpose of the study is to assess the DPP's policy-making in its Mainland China policy. I try to give a full picture of the policy-making process in the party. The most important factor in the formulation of the mainland China policy is the relationship between the factions within the DPP, therefore, I adopt the historical and document review approach on doing this study, and describe how the interaction between the factions worked and how they made the decisions on the policies? I found that the DPP will insist on its 'one Taiwan, one China' policy before becoming the ruling party in Taiwan. However, the DPP's insistence on the 'one China, one Taiwan' policy could bring conflicts across the Taiwan Straits and obstruct the possibility of replacing the ruling KMT's position. Hence the DPP tried to explain again the party's Taiwan independence platform, and to 'purify' the party’s ideology in order to achieve its present political aim. Because the cross-Straits relationship is still developing, the DPP's mainland policy would be affected by various factors across the Taiwan Straits. There is no final text of the DPP's mainland China policy at present. Therefore, I predict the future development of its China policy could tend in two ways. Firstly, if the cross-Straits exchanges increase, and Beijing reduces its hostility, the DPP's stand of 'one Taiwan, one China' will become more flexible, and it would keep on developing a more perfect China policy. Secondly, if the cross-Straits exchanges decrease, and Beijing increases the force of threatening to Taipei, the DPP's stand of 'one Taiwan, one China' policy will be more radical, even though it would not turn its back on the business affairs. At the end of this work, I suggest the DPP rethink its insistence on a Taiwanese independence position, this could not break Taiwan's isolation in international community, but could endanger Taiwan's security. As the factional fight has reduced the force of the DPP, to condense the powers of the party would be an important issue for the DPP
