Virginia Lacy Jones Papers
Virginia Lacy Jones (b. 1912 - d. 1984) was a librarian, educator, author, and among library educators known as "the Dean of Deans." She dedicated almost fifty years of her life to the library profession, thirty-six of which she spent as Dean of the School of Library Service at Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University). Her career began at Atlanta University in 1939 as Catalog Librarian in Trevor Arnett Library.
At the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library we are always striving to improve our digital collections. We welcome additional information about people, places, or events depicted in any of the works in this collection. To submit information, please contact us at [email protected].
Fire ants are drivers of biodiversity loss: a reply to King and Tschinkel (2013)
King and Tschinkel (2013) report on a manipulative experiment aimed at assessing the effects of a well-studied invasive ant species (Solenopsis invicta) on the species density and worker abundance of native ants in a relatively undisturbed longleaf pine savanna in northern FloridaFil: Stuble, Katharine L.. Thermal specialist ant species have restricted, equatorial geographic ranges: implications for climate change vulnerability and risk of extinction
The Janus of macrophysiology: stronger effects of evolutionary history, but weaker effects of climate on upper thermal limits are reversed for lower thermal limits in ants
Sources: Legal Reference for Librarians: How and Where to Find the Answers
Is it possible to provide excellent legal reference to library users without fear of liability or accusations of offering legal advice? According to this book, the answer is “yes.” In fact, as author Paul D. Healey points out, no librarian has ever been held professionally liable or accused of unauthorized practice of the law for providing legal information. However, the possibility of posturing as an expert is enough of a risk that many librarians are reluctant to offer this kind of reference service
Cytogenetic effects of selected clastogenic agents on amphibian developmental stages, 1981
D&C Red No. 19 (Rhodamine B) and FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tar-trazine) are federally approved dyes that are widely used in foods, drugs, and/or cosmetics. TEMPONE (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxo-piperidine-l-oxy1) is a stable free radical that has been used in membrane studies. Cytogenetic analysis of Amby-stoma maculatum embryos exposed to various concentrations of the three clastogenic agents were conducted. The results revealed chromosomal abnormalities such as sister chromatid fusions, gaps and anaphase bridges. Tests for toxicity and morphological changes induced by Rhodamine B, tartrazine and TEMPONE were also carried out on A. maculatum and Xenopus laevis embryos. Survival for X. lae-vis was less than 24 hr for concentrations of Rhodamine B and tartrazine between 1 mg/ml and 10 mg/ml. The embryos exposed to TEMPONE survived for a considerably longer time period. Ambystoma embryos survived all concentrations of the three compounds used for over a month. No morphological changes were observed in either of the species. The investigations indicate that an amphibian developmental system may be useful in the evaluation of potential mutagenic and clastogenic agents that are consumed in food, or found in the environment
