Topological quantum transitions in a two-band Chern insulator with n = 2
Based on a two-band Chern insulator with Chern number n = 2, we study the transport properties and the topological phase transition induced by either an external magnetic field or disorder. In this paper, a characteristic topological phase transition from n = 2 to n = 0, which is in sharp contrast to the plateau-plateau transition in the integer quantum Hall effect, is observed. This unique feature of the phase transition should be ascribed to the minimal two-band feature of this high Chern insulator. We prove this result by studying the transport properties of many different geometrical structures and the evolution of the Chern number in the presence of magnetic fields and strong disorder.Physics, Condensed MatterSCI(E)[email protected]
Chern Numbers of Uniruled Threefolds
In this paper we show that the Chern numbers of a smooth Mori fibre space in dimension three are bounded in terms of the underlying topological manifold. We also generalise a theorem of Cascini and the second named author on the boundedness of Chern numbers of certain threefolds to the case of negative Kodaira dimension
In-Chern-Hau-Tang and Genipin Reduces Acute Urinary Bladder Distension Evoked Sympathetic Activation-Induced Hepatic Dysfunction in Rats
Increased norepinephrine production by acute urine retention (AUR) induced sympathetic activation may contribute to acute liver injury (ALI) via the action of hepatic vasoconstriction and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. We evaluated whether In-Chern-Hau-Tang, a hepatoprotective herb medicine, and its major ingredient genipin, may ameliorate norepinephrine-induced liver injury in the rat. We determined the effects of In-Chern-Hau-Tang and genipin on norepinephrine-induced oxidative stress in the Kupffer and endothelial cells and AUR-induced ALI in the rat via a chemiluminescence analyzer, physiologic and biochemical determination and western blot. The results of in vitro study showed that genipin with efficient H2O2 and HOCl scavenging activities decreased norepinephrine-enhanced ROS production in the Kupffer cell and endothelial cell cultures. AUR activated hepatic sympathetic nervous activity lead to a hepatic hypoxia/hypoperfusion, and a reduction in bile flow. AUR increased intercellular adhesion molecular 1 (ICAM-1) protein expression, and hepatic ROS production from the activated leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity subsequently leading to plasma aspartate aminotransferase ( AST) elevation. Hepatic sympathetic denervation, or oral pretreatment of In- Chern-Hau-Tang or genipin for 1 week ameliorated the level in AUR-induced hepatic hypoxia/ hypoperfusion, and bile stasis. Hepatic denervation, In- Chern-Hau-Yang and genipin inhibited AUR-enhanced hepatic ICAM-1 expression, hepatic ROS production, leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity and plasma AST activity. In conclusion, In- Chern-Hau-Tang along with its active component, genipin, can ameliorate AUR-induced ALI via the alleviation of oxidative stress possibly by the inhibition of sympathetic induced hypoxia/hypoperfusion and leukocyte NADPH oxidase activity
Effect on Blood Pressure Control of Switching from Valsartan Monotherapy to Losartan/Hydro-Chlorothiazide in Asian Patients with Hypertension: Results of a Multicentre Open-Label Trial
Study design: An open- label, multicentre study was conducted to evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy of a 4- week course of losartan 50 mg plus hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg in Asian patients with essential hypertension whose blood pressure had previously been treated with but not controlled by valsartan 80 mg. Methods: A total of 237 eligible patients with mean trough sitting diastolic blood pressure SiDBP) 95 - 115 mmHg and a mean trough sitting systolic blood pressure ( SiSBP) 90 mmHg and who were not excluded for other reasons were then switched to a single-tablet formulation of losartan 50 mg/ hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg combination once daily for a further 4 weeks. Results: Mean SiDBP ( study primary endpoint) at the end of combination therapy was reduced to 86.9 mmHg from 95.2 mmHg. SiSBP ( study secondary endpoint) was reduced to 132.6 mmHg from 140.7 mmHg. Mean reductions after switching from valsartan 80 mg to losartan 50 mg/ hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg were thus 8.3 and 8.1 mmHg for SiDBP and SiSBP , respectively ( p 99%. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that in Asian patients who do not reach the goal of mean trough SiDBP <= 90 mmHg with valsartan monotherapy at 80 mg once-daily, switching to a single-tablet combination of losartan 50 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg once-daily is well tolerated , provides effective control of blood pressure and is an excellent choice to achieve blood pressure reduction goals
