One of the reasons is that all construction projects involve complex human interactions. Previous studies have shown that behavioral states can respond dynamically as the magnitude of a conflict increases. This has been empirically demonstrated using a catastrophe-theory-based, three-variable system involving the level of construction conflict, the level of tension, and the amount of behavioral flexibility (Yiu and Cheung, 2006). This paper reports on a study that builds on the above-mentioned study by Yiu and Cheung, and examines the application of moderated multiple regression (MMR) to the three-variable system. It was found that not all MMR models display a significant moderating effect. Two out of six MMR models were found to be significant in their effect. These models affirm that the nature of the relationship between the degree of uncertainty and adversarial attitudes (or mistrust level) varies, depending on the behavioral flexibility of the parties. Disordinal interactions were also found, suggesting that the interaction between behavioral flexibility and the conflict-tension relationship can change radically. Critical points for the degree of uncertainty were also able to be calculated. Beyond these points, even a flexible individual may find difficulty in minimizing or resolving construction conflicts. As such, it is suggested that such radical changes could be prevented by minimizing the degree of uncertainty in construction projects. © 2007 IEEE.Publishe

Ph.D.Tuning a system towards a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective way to search for or enhance superconductivity. Intense studies have been performed near magnetic QCPs where superconductivity often emerges. On the other hand, systems featuring a structural QCP are rare, but they have begun to gain attentions recently. The existence of structural QCPs has been suggested in LaCu₆₋ₓAuₓ and ScF₃. Nevertheless, superconductivity has not been observed in these systems. In contrast, the quasi-skutterudites (CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃ were found to be conventional superconductors featuring a structural QCP. Therefore, (CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃serves as a platform to study the interplay between structural instability and superconductivity. This thesis explores several topics related to this theme. We have measured and analyzed the specific heat capacity data of(CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃, in the normal and superconducting states, for seven x values straddling across the putative structural QCP (x ≈ 0.9), around which Tc is maximized. In the vicinity of the structural QCP, 2∆/kBT and ∆C/γTc values are found to be enhanced far beyond the BCS values, indicating strong coupling superconductivity; meanwhile, the Debye temperature is found to be significantly reduced which we attributed to the softening of a phonon mode responsible for the structural transition. While our heat capacity data offer the evidence of phonon softening, a more direct, microscopic evidence is highly desirable. Hence, we designed an inelastic X-ray scattering experiment to probe the lattice dynamics in(CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃. We successfully detected the softening of phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition. Intriguingly, at x = 0.85, the soft mode energy squared at the M point extrapolates to zero at nearly 0 K, providing the first compelling microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in (CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃.In addition to (CaxSr₁₋ₓ)₃Rh₄Sn₁₃, we also investigated La₃Co₄Sn₁₃, which is another quasi-skutterudite superconductor with structural instability. By using the combination of specific heat capacity, X-ray diffraction and computational results, we established that La₃Co₄Sn₁₃ has a second-order structural transition, in contrast to the first-order case, reported earlier by another group. Besides, density functional theory calculation on phonon dispersion relation shows structural instability at the M point, similar to the case in Sr₃Rh₄Sn₁₃. Hence, our results show that La₃Co₄Sn₁₃ is another platform to study the interplay between structural instability and superconductivity. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 77-80).Abstracts also in Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on …).Cheung, Yiu Wing = Zhun fang gu kuang jie gou liang zi lin jie dian he chao dao xing / Zhang Yaorong

Three essays in threshold models on Chinese and Hong Kong economies

    No full text
This thesis consists of three essays in threshold models on Chinese and Hong Kong Economies. The first essay discovers that capital inflow from non-residents can stimulate the service imports of the Chinese mainland, with a greater effect being found when the size of the capital inflow exceeds a time-varying threshold depending on the economic capacity of the Chinese mainland. The service exports of Hong Kong are shown to benefit from this development. The second essay studies the factory rent in Hong Kong, in which it is demonstrated that not only demand from the retail property rental market has been a factor in the recent increase of factory rent, but demands from the office rental market and domestic households have also contributed to the rise in factory rent since 2006 Q1 via a threshold regression. The third essay studies the effects of visitors’ income on their spending whilst visiting Hong Kong and discovers the different scales of such effects between Asian and non-Asian visitors through threshold models. Together with the findings of Chong and Yiu (2019) and the second essay of this thesis, which prove the causal impacts of the tourist arrivals on residential property rent and factory rent in Hong Kong respectively, this essay provides evidence for the contribution of the income growth of other economies to the surge in Hong Kong’s residential property and factory rents via the tourism industry. Yiu, Wing Ho.Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2020.Includes bibliographical references.Abstracts also in Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on October 11, 2022)
