An approach to Cheng-nan Lian-ju of Han Yu and Meng Jiao

    No full text
The tradition of linked verse in China was revived by the Da-li 大曆 poets and got popular among Mid-Tang 中唐 Literati, of whom two groups were most notable. One was led by Bai Ju-yi 白居易 and Liu Yu-xi 劉禹錫, whose linked verse grew out of their friendship. The other was led by Han Yu and Meng Jiao. They competed each other in their poetic art and experimented with new expressions. In this article I offer a close reading of the first part of their representative work "Cheng-nan Lian-ju". They deal with fresh subject matters, and their description is unique in their determined avoidance of stale poetic diction. This new poetic style directly influenced Li He 李賀, especially in Chang-gu shi 昌谷詩. However, the two pieces are quite different. For example, while "Cheng-nan Lian-ju", though very concrete in its description, is not about any real place, in Chang-gu shi, Li He when evidently writing about the scenery of Chang-gu, his home country, created an imaginary world out of a real place

Re-examining the Spiritual World of Han-Yu: Discussion on The Criticisms of Han-Yu from the Period of late Qing to early Republic China

    No full text
The aim of this dissertation is to comprehend and analyze the phenomenon of the “degradation of Han-Yu” and through this degradation, explore the inner world of Han-Yu. This study will be focusing on the collection, integration and analysis of the documents in order to create and grasp a clear image of Han-Yu during the late Qin and early Republic periods. Furthermore, this essay will be reviewing the original text and doing a comparison with the image of Han-Yu at the time. The low popularity / bad reputation of Han-Yu during the late Qin and early Republic periods revealed that the meaning of “Dao” changed in people’s minds. When Democracy became the new ideal polity and people embarked on the pursuit of the “western knowledge,” Han-Yu served as the paradigm in order to differentiate the ideas and teachings of the ancient times with the modern new ones and was used in order to compare the Chinese and Western ideologies. This dissertation will be firstly exploring the way in which politics, society and literature affected people and continue with issuing the details of Han-Yu’s criticism. The study will conclude with the revealing of his sentiments/feelings/spirit and the characteristics of his life by replying to this criticism. The controversy of Han-Yu is in truth the complexity of humanity, so the reasons for which he had been degraded tend to reveal his forthright, sincere and passionate personality. This is the reason why, although there are various reviews which either admired or degraded him, he still holds a principal position throughout history

DIETARY CONDITIONS AND DIFFERENTIAL ACCESS TO FOOD RESOURCES AMONG THE VARIOUS CLASSES DURING THE HAN PERIOD

In this thesis, I study how food resources and dietary conditions were determined by social and economic status during the Han period in China, B.C. 206~A.D.220. Even though earlier scholars have published research concerning the Chinese food culture of this period, these studies were limited in that they only illustrated the dietary culture of the upper class or the available food resources in one geographic area. Also, without any persuasive data, it has been assumed by these earlier scholars that there were big differences in food resources and food consumption between the upper and lower classes. In this thesis, for comparison among the classes, I divide the social and economic classes into five stratified groups: nobles, officials, peasants, soldiers and convicts. After a brief introduction of the nature of each social class, I examine the food resources and nutritional condition of each group using information such as the wealth and income of each group, the market price of food resources, the agricultural products of peasants, and the amount of food distribution to soldiers and convicts. I found these data from archaeological remains, received historical records and pictorial data, and excavated texts. This research shows a broader view of Chinese dietary condition focusing not only on the variety of food resources of nobles, but also on the different food accessibilities among the officials, and the food deficiencies of peasants. It also deals with the situations of food supply for soldiers and convicts in an effort to reveal the true dietary consumption and nutritional conditions for all Chinese. This research proves that the various classes during the Han period in China had different food resources and dietary conditions
